I need to clarify the way that the 'escape at 500m' rule actually works, having had a player convinced that he was shortchanged by an event where it didn't happen.

There's 2 parts to the rule:

1. A car must be 500m+ from *all* enemy vehicles
*and*
2. The car must be moving away from *all* enemy vehicles

"Moving away from" means: getting further away from, which is based on the velocities of *both* vehicles.

The 2nd part of the rule has been in existence since 2007, but I guess a lot of people aren't aware of it. It was written specifically for the situation where a combat has broken into 2 or more separate groups, and a car wants to drive from one group to the other group. That car should not vanish from the combat when its halfway between the two groups.

This reminds me of some doubts I have about the 500m escape:
It is said that in SCL, if a player escapes his last car at 500m, the result of the match is a draw, no mater the score, Is that intended?
Is it also intended that a player can use the 500m escape distance to take out oponent vehicles in SCL?

surely then you should give the player car the choice? lets get rid of auto escape and create an option to escape in player vs AI matches.

Can I ask why the auto escape at 500m is even in for?

Is it to stop exploits of players getting driving skills by just driving and driving and driving?

Or was there some other reason?

If it was to stop an exploit leave it in, if not then I am with Goat and take it out.

I think it was to stop people from running until only one car was left? But if don't auto escape at 500, then the enemy wouldn't either, so we'd wouldn't be able to lose the ones we wanted to?

In this case the cars that didn't auto-escape were NPC ones. (They then went on to cause a lot of damage to the player who thought it was a bug).

I don't recall the exact reason why there's an auto-escape at 500m. It certainly makes sense for the NPCs to do so, and in PvP, otherwise combats could go on for hours. But perhaps for PvE combats its not necessary for player cars.

There may have been some other reasons. The rule dates back to 2006.

Then I must formally say I'd be in favor of changing it.

From this statement I understand it is a valid strategy to take out opponent cars by running away to 500m and then take out the remaining cars in PvP. Or it is an exploit?

I think it's probably gaming the system, but not an exploit, since the rule has to exist so that combats can't become stalemates that take forever. It's probably not possible to have rules that are perfect for every situation.

Understood.
Is it also "gaming the system" to auto-escape your last car to get a draw instead of a defeat?

No, that would be a bug.  Do you have an event ID where it happened so I can check the server log?

I do not refer to any game in particular, just asking for general knowledge. If it happens in a game will let you know.
Thanks for your response.

It is up to the opposing player to keep their cars together do you can't do that... If you allow it to happen to you that is your choice... As you are a sentient being unlike the ai.

lol, Yeah, I hear it cost him a 10 million dollar Ferrari (Cougar) lost to the AI that drove hundreds and hundreds of meters back into range to take him apart.

But this clarification DOES explain for me why ive been trying to escape and had cars in the distance at 720m and wondered why they were still there.

In a recent case for me, I had a car I saw at 680m and the closest on to me was 285m.  I spun around to go a different direction and then as soon as I did POOF! I auto escaped even though I was 285m from the enemy closest to me!

That was odd.

I was in an event with a bunch of other players I drove off in a different direction from everyone else. After driving more than 500 meters away with two cars chasing me I took both of them out and turned around to go back. I got to their exact location as we could see flags but I could not see them. I thought the 500 meter limit was to prevent the game from dropping cars like it did on me that time.

If we change it, can we negate the leadership skill loss from a manual escape where nothing was lost?

Never thought of that, guess that is why everyone tries to run to the 500m
