Radioactive alien mutant zombie racers!

With Halloween hitting Evan once again, some really strange stuff has been happening. Reports have been arriving of travellers being attacked by pirate gangs filled with mutant zombies. Many of these pirates vehicles are apparently sporting gruesome logos of ghouls, blood and fangs.

The ever popular Dynamite Dexter has offered to lend vehicles to anyone willing to help beat back the mutant incursions. Jake the Mechanic was also asked to help sponsor Somerset`s defence, but apparently he would rather sell his own mother than part with any cars for free.

`I`d rather sell my own mother` he said.

Turfwars Spill Over into Somerset

To the astonishment of many onlookers yesterday, a deadly battle between the infamous Empire Pirate Gang and the Stranglers, Evan`s most notorius bounty hunters, continued past the town limits and into the centre of town.

`The first I knew about it, there was a lot of shouting and the unmistakable rattling cough of gatling gun fire right outside the tavern` said Dynamite Dexter, local tavern owner.

`We almost never see this around here, well defended as we are by all those righteous vigilante groups.

`So then I ran out front, along with those of my clientele that were still conscious and hadn`t drank too much of that Cactus-mash spirit I got in earlier that day.

`There was a bunch of pickups fighting right there in the marketplace, and a couple of burning wrecks in front of the tavern. I sure hope someone does something about this, or before we know it this place is gonna be as bad as those two truckstops down south. We`re supposed to be civilized folk around here!`

Crushers Crushed at Elmsfield

After a quick trade run to Elmsfield, several senior members of Clarinbridge Crushers, including Steve Jackson and Annette Jackman, were on their way back to Somerset when they were attacked by North Desert Marauders. Following a good battle, they picked up a few new cars including a beat up boxvan.

Well, headed straight back for Elmsfield with the loot they were waylaid by a large group from Hammerstein. The boxvan`s engine went first, and it was unable to bring its rear-mounted Cannon to bear on the opposition.

A mighty scrap in the middle of the road as the Crushers tried to cut and run for town; long-time gang leader Steve Jackson was getting pummelled and new member Jim Reid was nearly down too.

This was enough, and the Crushers surrendered their vehicles. A costly excursion, with losses above 100k. A harsh lesson about getting greedy with the loot. A beat-up boxvan is a deathtrap.

Missing editor

We are still without news from our fellow collaborator and assistant chief editor, Badger.

Last time we heard of him, he had been spotted South-West of Badlands TruckStop, travelling on the road to the infamous Firelight town, home of all scum and mutants of Evan.

Despite his terrible writing style - and very poor sense of humor-, we enjoyed to ask him to make coffee and clean the office, among other things.

So please, if you have seen this man - bold, purple shirts with cigars in each hand-, send a messenger to The Gazette, main office, Elmsfield.

We are almost out of coffee!

Tom `The Mongoose` McEwen

Let no one say it was the car that killed Tom `The Mongoose` McEwen. Tom McEwen drove his beloved Roadrunner every day for the last months of his life. He knew it like an old friend, a trusted ally, a gentle lover. He knew it like he knew himself, and trusted it with his life. Many things might have brought about the demise of The Mongoose, but it was not his car.

It was the flaming oil that killed him. Laid down by his own hands, like so many times before, but this time, far too accurate. He could have choosen no point along the Northern Desert track where the oil could have been more devastating. The tires painted the ground below in a patchwork of dancing flames and blossoming black as Tom and the Roadrunner skidded, and headed for the wall.

He hit the barrier at 145 miles per hour, and when the Roadrunner finally came to a rest, Tom McEwen had long since passed from this world.

I never saw my father lose control of a car. To this day, and for every day for the rest of my life, I will hold on to the firm belief that The Mongoose simply wanted to know just how close to the edge of the abyss he and his beloved Roadrunner could dance, and that every time he stepped out onto the tracks, he knew he could not rest until he had danced just a little bit closer. And another few steps closer.

I believe my father finally leaped the chasm of that vast abyss. And I believe he is still dancing, on his way to heaven.

No, let no one say it was the car that killed Tom McEwen.

Let them say it was the car that gave Tom McEwen life.

- Tom McEwen II of the Gearjammers, son, comrade, and one of many who will always remember Tom `The Mongoose` McEwen
