Relations between the Slavers and Mutants have deteriorated after a raid on Ernie`s freight, said to contain `Food` for the upcoming Great Shantyville BBQ.

So much going on in Evan, with all the fighting. Hard to hear the small voices in the crowd. Someone needs to make them be heard, to drown out all the distractions for one brief moment, and listen to one voice. Looking around, I see no one else doing it. Which leaves me. My name is Sammie Juhl. You may have seen me around Dex`s a few times, or here and there in Somerset. I get `wolf-whistles` all the time but there is more to me than the pretty blonde. There is more to me than the gunner, the scout. I`ll bet there`s more to you as well. Tell me.

I`ll be recording interviews in Somerset over the next few weeks. After that, who knows? Maybe I will just be another casualty, killed while limping a broken Desert Stalker back to base.

Most people would expect me to interview a gang leader first. But there are smaller voices lost in the chaos, and those are the ones I strain to hear.

My interview today is with Gary Poole, of my own gang, The 4saken.

SJ Gary, you`ve been in alot of combats now, and you`ve been here quite a bit longer than I have, but people still treat you like a recruit. How does that make you feel?

GP Wow, you just came right out with it, eh? Well... ummm...

Gary spends a bit of time in thought before replying.

Idunno, maybe it`s just me. I`m not `one of the guys` yet, so to speak. I`ve always got the sh*t jobs and I`ve always put up with it. Hell, I think I`m starting to get to like being in a rented Marauder. But...

... I`m sure you know how the last scout went down. You guys were out of the fight early, but I`m sure you could see some of it in the distance.. the fight that wouldn`t end. I was on the ground [on foot] with Frank [`Lieutenant` Frank McWhorter, our gang leader] himself. He told me to dish it out and I dished it. When the Marauder lost a side I dished it out. Out of rockets [his reloads were destroyed] and one machine gun and I dished it. Then on foot with a rifle. He hasn`t said anything, but I can see it in his eyes, he looks at me different now. One of the guys in the garage said, `Heard your balls dropped the other day, Gary.` So... I think all that`s behind me now. Next question.

SJ How do you think being one of the 4saken is different from being in another gang? Or working for another gang leader?

GP I dunno. Frank treats us fair, and I`ve heard that some gangs will just grind you up and spit you out. Hell, I`m told one of `em will grind you up and serve you with ketchup! Seriously, though, even being as much of a hard-ass as he is I`ve never been forced to do anything, and I`ve always been given the leeway to make my own tactics. Hell, I think last battle was the first time he ever `ordered` me to do anything.

SJ Well, yeah, it was a rough one. So... what do you remember most about the last scout?

GP God it was such an ordeal... where to begin. I remember the sinking feeling when I saw the Apache and BPU start to slide down the incline in the soft sand.. I remember Freddy taking pot-shots [with his rifle] from up on the ridge... a deep breath when I told Jeff to hit the brakes and let me out... Herbie... yeah, Herbert Helms. [Helms was our main mechanic in SS and one of our best gunners.]

I was up on a ridge providing cover fire. I could see everything. There was some ruined overpass that had fallen. Franks`s BPU was already dead from being stuck on it for the second time and everyone had bailed to fight on foot. They had a pirate Marauder on them but it slid down the same soft sand and got stuck, and Herb managed to get out of the machine gun arc and kept firing shots into the open side with his .30 cal rifle. He did that until it was quiet.

Gary takes a deep breath.

So he`s turning to flank around to get the other pirate car still left and there`s just this `Blam!` and an... explosion... [of] blood out of his chest. Then I see him, the damn mutie pirate. All I can see is his legs, under the roadway. Herb spins around somehow, tries to get off a shot. I don`t remember whether he did or not. I just remember the second shot hitting him. At least this one was in the front.

Frank was around back and tried to draw them out - there was a second one, too - into the open for me to shoot `em. And I did. But I don`t remember that, really. I just remember Herb. Getting shot in the back.

SJ So... if you could change one thing about the last scout, what would it be?

GP [Chuckles] The friggin` sand. The sand on the top of that hill. If half of us had never slid down it would have never gone like that. What about you?

This was a hard one for me to answer. Not because I didn`t know the answer, I just wasn`t ready to face it.

SJ I wish... I wish... that Clarence had been the scout, not me. No matter what people say about him, he would have known there were more of them hiding. At the time I was glad that Frank had selected me, as untried as I am. I just wanted to show him I could do it. And I wonder... I have to wonder how much of a difference that would have made, you know?

GP [Nodding] I know. But don`t ever second guess yourself out there, Sammie. Never. You know how I got by being a `newb`, an FNG? It`s because the way everyone else felt about me and the way I felt about myself were two separate things. They can laugh behind my back but my head is always held high. So don`t doubt yourself, just go out there and do what needs to be done, eh? Simple.

So how about that drink?

SJ Alright, Gary, you got me. Just this once.
