Running his hands over the wheel, looking at the bank of toggles on the `overhead` it was all coming back. The adrenaline. He looked to his left out the window past Gene to one of the GGG crew and pointed to the closest one and crossed his arms on his chest. Without Gene`s familiar `OK` nod, the unknown helper hurriedly reached in and helped Carlos buckle the harness. These GGG members were well trained here! They went to work with simple hand signals. He didn`t remember the harness fitting so tightly! With practiced ease, he reached up and switched on the Battery and Alternator toggles. He hit the starter button and the V8 growled as the starter engaged slowly churning the engine `WAH--------Wah`.......... Once.... twice... The chassis rocked to the right on it`s shocks as the engine roared to life rumbling. Carlos gave the throttle a push or two and the V8 kicked in it`s cradle, rocking the car under his touch. Carlos was grinning widely! He switched on the overhead `gunnery` toggles and laughed as he felt the buzz and heard the Gatling guns power units whining to a higher pitch as they spun up readying the targeting and firing nacelles that swayed the guns around their axes. The front of the Roadrunner rocked slightly sideways and up on its` springs as the guns swiveled and found their Center Lock. The Hud blinked briefly and glowed flourescent green on the windscreen. `Carlos!` Maggie yelled from the front of the car. He saw, but could not hear her. She saw his widely grinning face light up. Gene put his hands on the driver door and yelled, `CARLOS! Shut `er down!` He heard that. He toggled the radio switch and tuned in a station turning up the volume. `DAMN good song!` He thought when he heard the tune belting out of the speakers. Suitable for his decision. He grinned like a cheshire cat and looked at Gene as he yelled back, `I`ve had second thoughts!..... I`m gonna deliver the message myself!` Carlos slammed the `RoadRunner` into overdrive and pushed the throttle to the floor. The V8 responded almost in time with the music as he sped out of the GGG`s garage. `Well I`m runnin down the road, trying to loosen my load, I got 7 women on my mind. 4 that want to own me, 2 that want to stone me, and 1...says she`s a friend of mine.` He Loved that song! `Grandpa used to play that when he was a kid!` he thought as two rooster-tails of dirt showered the GGG Garage and the few gang members standing there gawking, waving their arms in front of their faces, trying to keep the dust from filling their open mouths. ---------------------------------------- In tribute to Latte`s Raiders. `So, who we gonna side with?` The question had been asked several times in the past few weeks, but it seemed like it was becoming irrelevant. `Im not sure,` came the answer. Keith Drake, the leader of The Underdogs sat at the table with frustration, fueled by uncertainty, underlying his voice. `But the waiting is killing me.` * New rules of engagement have come into play. The vigilante groups that patrol the roads, clearing the roads of pirates, have agreed to no longer to attack each other outside of the major towns. Even those gangs whose reputations border on pirate themselves, such as Longos Merry Men and Famiglia Rivera, can consider themselves immune to attack from other vigilante gangs. They still face attack from the pirate gangs that roam the wasteland, refusing to engage in diplomacy of any sort. And Bounty Hunter gangs listen to only one thing their clients money. Despite the truce, traders still risk attack from the very vigilante groups sworn to protect them. These raids go unpunished until the bounty gets high enough for the Road Ronins or Fait Accompli catch wind of it. At least, thats the way it seems under these new rules of engagement. So whats brought about this new peace? The possibility of war. Its no secret that some of the larger, more prosperous wilderness camps, such as Southern Pride, Rorkes Drift, and Rogues Ridge, have held advanced manufacturing techniques that surpassed the small engineering shops in towns. In recent weeks, though, theyve developed new manufacturing techniques to develop some of the more technologically advanced weapons and unique car chassis otherwise only found after peeling out the dead bodies of their former owners. Interest in owning or joining a camp has increased dramatically. Even famed autoduelling team Slaythofens has opened a new camp in the wastes near Sarsfield. So far moneys been the only factor as to who owns these camps, but violence appears likely on the horizon. The space needed to build factories and other resources for these camps makes building them near towns impractical. That means the camps could be vulnerable to pirate attacks, or even raids from other camps looking to steal away their technology. Reputation of the camps will become more important than ever as the most talented mechanics in Evan make up their minds where to best ply their craft. Unfortunately, fixing up junkers at Jakes in Sommerset isnt the destination for most of them. Scuttlebutt in the taverns has raged back and forth about what this new direction means. Will gangs pull away from the towns, defending the wealth of their mini-fortresses in the wilderness? If so, who remains to protect the civilized towns from marauders? Many independent gangs work for multiple camps as haulers, mechanics or just mercenaries. What happens if two camps declare all-out war? How will those gangs react? For now, only a few of the camp leaders have made any challenges, and those challenges have remained unanswered. Back in town, citizens keep their attention fixed on the local leagues more than the politics outside city walls. But, when these camps start buying sponsorships in the leagues, advertising on billboards around the track, who cant help but wonder if this heralds in a new era in a civilization just barely recovering from the brink of extinction? Story by t0rp0r by BWGunner With the major leagues coming towards their conclusion, the current leaders are: Evan Race Ladder - Lattes Raiders There is currently one minor league in progress also: Northern Paintball League - Slaythofens |
