Rocktacular VI Pickupapocalypse

Proudly brought to you by The Light Brigade -CI- associates of the Hitmen Trucking Group

Where do the Clarenbridge Crushers come from? No word from them for months, But when they do turn up, lookout. They have rotten bad potato breath and and a mean appetite for rockets so there was no surprises when they did show at rock 6.

Was there any bias in targets? `No` claims the organisers, but there was outrage and claims of fixing by the frenzied crowd. Fights broke out and many were killed or left to make their way to Somerset Hospital. All this was in favour of local Death Race Mafia who made a greedy profit on the event and ensuing `battle of the fans`, as it was quickly dubbed by the Channel 8 announcers at the arena. `Woohoo, look what he`s doing with that chainsaw` a comment that will be remembered by all the viewers here in Dexters tavern.

`That one statement there made me a lot of money that day.` Claims Dynamite, owner of Dexters Tavern

What counts is who wins, and this day it was the Clan from under the bridge.

Lost Trail:Dead River

Dangerous winds once again lash the northern town Elmsfield. No wildlife could be found in the short break we found in the storm.

Lonesome Highway

Mosty Clear skies but the roads are laiden with pirates near Badlands. A green hue has been noted to the Lights in the Sky. How is this effecting the wildlife in the region? With Slavers close on our tail, we were not going to stop and find out.

Have a wildlife report?
Manage to get some close up shots of that Rabid mutant turtle?
Get some shots of the Aurora before your camera was eaten by snakes?

They call me `Hammer` now

The `old timers` will tell you it`s not the fun times you remember.

Until last week I thought they were just blowing smoke up our , us being the new guys and all.

But I`ll tell you what, I can`t get the horror out of my dreams or the fear out of my gut. The oldsters smiled when they said what they said and we smiled back, too new and too stupid to see past the smiles and into their eyes.

To the vacant blackness that sneaked in around the edges. To wherever it was their sight went to when they said that.

To where mine goes now. To where the horror lurks in the dark, waiting for me to give up on the light.

`You ready, kid?` asked Adah, the vet` to whose Apache I`d been assigned. Every now and then he`d say something and everyone would yell `Oh no you don`t!` It stuck I guess. After you`d been `around the block,` sometimes they gave you a nickname. It was a big thing to them.

Can`t remember his last name. Guess I didn`t have time to learn it.

`I`m ready! Let`s do this!`

He`d smiled...and now that I remember, it was the same smile the oldies had had. I just couldn`t see then.

With 8 other ATVs, Apaches and Landrunners, we`d rolled out behind the big hitters, a pair of Buzzers with gaping gun ports out their rears. I knew one was a set of ATGs, the other CCs.

Either of them could rip you a new one. In pairs, they could seriously ruin your day.

Between them rode the metallic monster: what we`re told was something that used to roll around collecting up trash and what not `back in the days,` before all this. `All this` was all we knew. Oh, we heard the stories, but we were too young to really grasp it.

The `TT` was our ammo carrier. We`d been given a tour by the driver. It was the TT`s job to cover us if we got jumped. To accomplish that, a pair of big, flat nozzles hung just below the rear deck. Sticking down into the nozzles from above were a pair of spark plugs, one per nozzle. That`s what lit the oil on fire and made driving a little hazardous for anyone unfortunate enough to be trailing it.

Welded to the front end were two massive plates of steel adorned with nasty, jagged bits attached across the whole front of the contraption. They told us if anything was too slow to get out of the way, the force would be so great that it`s weld the remains onto the front, making it even nastier.

I don`t know about that. S`not what I saw.

Our `ride` sported twin HMGs. Lots of ammo. Myself and another rookie. Never learned his name, or the fear drove it out of my brain later. Not sure which. Don`t care.

We were strapped loosely, giving us some small bit of freedom from the 4-point harnesses that would hold us if, and when, the hit the fan, as they say.

`The Mad Minute` I`d heard it called. That point in a fight when your brain`s working so fast and so hard you`d swear time was standing still and the world was coming apart around you.

We found out all about that.

The squad worked its way out of the Badlands Truck Stop early. It was still sort of cool. Adad worked the wheel and got us a spot out on the edge of the formation. We rode that way for a couple hours, until the ground started to change.

It got more rugged. Grass came sparser. Trees all but disappeared. It was the beginning of `The Wastes.` I`d never seen it before. I`d been to Somerset once, when my Dad was still alive. Lots of trees around there. Grass too. We even saw a lake.

Soon, it seemed as if the air had changed. It looked yellow, clung low to the ground. `Sulphur,` Adad said. `Acid lands. Strap up, bring your guns up. Roads get narrower.`

We went from a flank position into a trailing one, falling in behind the CGL boats; a pair of LandRunners with firing ports along the roof and back, so they could adjust the trajectory.

Behind us came another pair of Apaches.

The other 6 vehicles, including the Buzzers, were up front, flanking the TT.

And then the radios had started screaming. Well, not the radios, really, but the people using them. `Helmets!` Adad had screamed. He was already strapping his on. I fumbled mine, dropped it.

Adad cut the wheel hard to the left. I bounced my melon off the hard steel of the door. Saw stars. Got a hand on my helmet strap. Managed to get it on. I could feel the Apache bucking...my partner was already firing at something. I hadn`t even got my helmet on.

He probably would have been pretty good. Fast.

Helmet on and guns charged, I looked for and found a target. So close. How they`d gotten so close I don`t know. It took me a second to realize it wasn`t one of ours. Black Apache. BIG gun port. I thumbed the yoke triggers. Felt another kick through the seat. I was firing my weapon in anger for the first time.

Killed the outa some rocks. Cursed myself. Guess I was screaming. Couldn`t tell. Adad was screaming, the other guy was screaming...and there was this noise, like someone banging pots together. The Apache shook a different way.

Then I saw the `pache behind us belch flame. There was a huge BANG! My head bounced off the window again. This time Adad wasn`t turning the wheel. His nose was bleeding. I caught the Apache in my sights...jerked the yoke.

Bright flashes of orange and white sparked across the hood, slammed into the armored windscreen. That was me! I did that!

The rear wheels of our gunboat bit ground, the Apache slewed to the right. Nothing for my head to hit. But I lost my sighting. Something screeched through the air just outside my door. Blasted into the rock face of the cliff next to us. Sprayed razor-sharp shards of sun-baked stone at us. Sounded like rain against the steel. The black Apache skidded into my sights.

I caught it low, saw sparks, fire, then dirt. Its nose dipped hard, caught dirt, dug in. It rose up on the corner, wheels spinning. My rounds broke across the hood, tore into the roof. I could see a face. For a second, then there was a mist...pink and red. Then the Apache rolled. I looked for something else to shoot.

Then Adad was on top of me. The straps in my seat clawed into my skin through my jacket and pants. Adad fell to the floor at my feet.

Well, his top half anyways. I guess the bad guys train their guys the same as we do. As we rolled, they went on to shooting something else.

I guess I got knocked out. When I woke up, I could tell I was upside down. The straps were cutting into my skin. There was blood. Smoke filled the cabin. Something was burning.

The kid behind me was gone...along with the back half of the Apache. We had landed in some kind of ditch.

When I crawled out, fire and smoke were everywhere. I could hear people screaming. Crying. Choking. There was a big truck thing on its side behind us. Flames licked out of its torn sides. I could see body parts strewn on the ground all around it.

Laying roof to roof with us was the black Apache that`d killed us, even as we were killing it. Something was trying to crawl out what remained of a door. It looked at me and seemed to reach for me, like it was asking me to help.

They tell me they found me sitting on top of the destroyed Apache, a length of jagged metal in my hand. Had to wear bandages on it for week. I`d beaten that thing into mush.

They call me `Hammer` now. And I smile when I tell the new guys about how it`s not the good times you remember.

And the horrors rise up against my eyes. I can feel them. But I keep smiling.
