In her delirium, Birdie Sinclair saw dust puff from her parched lips as she stumbled down the broken, baked roadside. The strap of her rifle hung to her leather armband as the weapon dragged behind her. Sundried blood caked at her temple she remembered only strands of what had transpired.

The Sun was behind her. It was ahead of her. A hazy mirage of smoky scrap and flames played before Birdie`s feverish, listless eyes. The roar of fire filled her mind. She saw The Rook`s head explode again, inches in front of her, and she drew up sharply, shaking clear her clouded mind..

She remembered that moron Fubb had been to blame. He had flipped his Symphony again. Birdie had been peppered by rocks and shrapnel for 15 minutes by some weekend cowboy who kept screaming `RED!`. She assumed that was the jerk`s surname. The Rook had died first -quickly- before Fubb had been punished for his ineptitude while he stared down the barrel of a machine gun, screaming like a mule and tugging uselessly at his seatbelt.

Birdie, strapped in behind Fubb and The Rook had shut her eyes, held her breath and played dead. This was an easy task for Sinclair: she was as sickly as they come. Among The Turpins, she had been known as Sternum Sinclair. She detested the nickname but she was generally scorned by her peers so it endured. Public scorn had earned her a few more nicknames -chiefly `Chicken Legs`, `Sticks` and `The Dirty Lung`. Her habit of breaking bottles and stabbing the locals at Dexter`s Tavern was of municipal notoriety and an absolute nuisance.

The remembered roar of fire faded slowly into a similar but mechanical rumble. Tires screeched and a burlap sack was pulled over her head. When she gave her name, she was beaten with a heavy plank by a man with a burly voice after a short exchange between her assailants that had ended with `Ooooooh! Her!`.

Now she was waking up, many hours later, behind the wheel. The blaring speakers and colorful pageants every shade of brown, dust and gray told her she was on an SS racetrack. She was annoyed at the idiot racer honking to her right and the spattering crackle of engines on her left positively drove her mad. She wanted to sleep. And drink.
