But Latte`s Raiders are no saints. In fact, as well as being one of the most famous gangs in Evan, they`re one of the most feared pirates, with substantial bounties offered by the various militia in the Northern towns for their capture or death.  So perhaps it was no surprise when Bounty Hunters `The Stranglers` swooped out of the broken hills north of Gateway as Latte`s posse picked their way towards the truck stop. The only surprise was that one of our Gazette reporters, out in the wilderness searching for medicinal Gateway cactus, got to see the whole thing.  Despite getting the better of the early exchanges, Latte`s heavy lorries, many on loan from other gangs, were soon caught by the faster cars of their enemy. A rolling melee developed as the convoy careered towards the smashed overpass that marks the difficult terrain before you get to Gateway.  The first casualty was one of the rear trucks, caught by their pursuers and wiped out by relentless weapons fire. Harry Clement, driver of the lorry, was killed.   As the solar wind beat a psychedelic pattern on the horizon, explosions pummeled the red desert sand. Only the frantically deployed smoke and paint from Latte`s trucks seemed to be keeping them alive.     The trucks managed to get to the sharp right-hand bend that cuts under the old road before snaking through the broken hills towards Gateway. The leading Strangler vehicles suffered their smaller bulk as the Latte trucks smashed into them on the corner.  And then suddenly there was daylight between the remaining trucks and their pursuers. Confused by the pile-up on the corner, and knocked back by a volley of mortars flung at them by the fleeing trucks, they foundered under the old overpass.  And then around the next bend, the Latte convoy saw the thick walls of Gateway and knew they were safe.   This epic battle will pass into Evan legend. Pirate gang Latte`s Raiders escaped the clutches of one the the North`s most powerful bounty hunter gangs, and losing only one truck they made it to Gateway. |
