Skies are still clear and its uncertain whether the weather has anything to do with the large numbers of worms.


Many were injured and 2 dead; including 38 y/o Expert gunner `The immortal` who lost a leg from friendly fire, in the mayhem.

Also the MP leader who shot accidentally at the beginning of the fray and left for dead was munched by a worm, only surviving after falling unconscious, losing the worms interest. They like they`re victims wriggling.

Irony was something we didn`t learn about in school. It was considered great if you could just read and write and do some basic figuring.

We all knew we were either destined for the farms or water collection factories. A few might break out and make a name for themselves in the arenas across Evan, trading life for wealth and fame. A very few.

The ones that just couldn`t manage to do anything constructive for society, those like me, turned to hiring on with the many gangs that plied the wastelands. There were always recruiters in the truck stop. They told you pretty lies and bought drinks. No different than my parents, I guess. Less booze though. I signed up.

We are the ones that go out there, looking for remnants of what once was; the real, as comared to the stories we are told growing up.

Our efforts scavenge materials to keep the towns growing and mobile. Mobility is everything.

When I signed on I thought it would be all guns ablazing blood and guts. Turns out it`s late nights tearing down the heaps we loot from the real bad guys of the wastelands, dragging the parts and tires off to sell. If it`s not that, it`s working on our own rigs. I`ve learned more, here, about reading, writing and figuring than I ever did in school.

I also learned that when someone says `It ain`t no big thing,` you hope they`re not saying it to you.

Because therein lies the irony. It IS a big thing. So when I got called into the Bull`s office, and heard those words, I knew I was screwed.

`Nothing to it,` and `Nothing to worry about,` and `Piece of cake,` that`s what I heard.

`You`re a dead mother frakker,` is all I saw in their eyes.

When we go out to hunt, we`re in big hulking weapon-laden armored monsters, with a couple fast-movers to watch our flanks. Even they have weapons.

What they asked me to do, then, in my mind, was just plain crazy.

I didn`t know just how crazy until I rounded a little hillock, flat out, listening to the big 5-liter, stuffed under the hood of the Corghette they stuffed me into, roar as I tried to put my foot through the floor to get some more speed out of it.

It was giving all it had. So was the Scorpion behind me. I couldn`t hear the HMG going off, what with the open headers on the Corghette drowning everything out, but I could see the dirt kicking up and the sparks fly as the rounds meant for me tore up the earth everywhere around.

I`d lost the Scorp`s partner, an off-road Marauder, in a 100 MPH sliding contest. He`d found some rock under the dirt and had flipped through the air and over a cliff. Doom on you, Dickie.

But the guy in the Scorp` was a better driver, less crazy. Or crazier, I dunno.

Nothing I can do except floor it and hope. Some idiot decided I didn`t need weapons.

`It`s speed that`ll save you.` Thomas `Thumbs` Smith had told me as he gave me a briefing on the Corghette. `You don`t need no guns. Just punch it and go!`

I was punching it. It was going. But so was the Scorpion. The only saving grace: I could see the front end lifting from the recoil of that big lead-chucker. Its driver was having trouble keeping it straight.

And that`s when the low-slung Merc` slid out from behind a bunch of trees, dead in front of me, moving left to right. Fast.

Not as fast as me, but he had the angle. They told me what to do if this happened. I`d thought it was crazy then. Still do. But I did it anyways.

I cut hard straight into the Merc`. It went from way over there to `oh ` close in about a heartbeat. I think I caught the driver by surprise. He overcorrected right. The rear end slung out and started around.

That didn`t stop him from letting loose with something big. The recoil lifted the front end and sent the Merc` into a slide. The ATG round went right across the front end of the Corghette. Damn thing put a crease in the hood. I heard somebody screaming.

Must have been the Scorpion`s driver. The round caught his ride dead in the nose. Doom on you too.

And then in a flash I was past the Merc`, close enough I could see the painted face of the crazy in the driver`s seat. He was hauling on the wheel, trying to get the big sedan under control. I had 115 yards of open ground between him and me by the time he got it turned around.

The Scorp` had bounced over some rough ground. I could see the left front hanging low. The lost tire meant he was out of the game. I could outrun him, now.

I grinned, gunned the big 5-liter and let her out. Still wish I had something more than a rifle though. Can`t wait to get to Somerset. I hear they have girls you don`t have to pay. Someone said they wear these weird black dresses with big ears. I can`t wait.

After all, you`re gunna need `em some day.
