Didnt wanna quit without writing few words on DW. Just my short impression after playing this weekend. No wall of text, no worries (I hope).

I found out about this game at www.rockpapershotgun.com maybe a week ago (great site btw) and loved the whole concept. Comments from people there were positive. So I registered. Well, getting started was not easy but I kinda worked my way through all the basics. Did few races, made my first $, borrowed a car and was about to get serious... and couldnt. Noone to scout with. Spent alot of time in the lobby staring at chat, looking for some action. Asked from time to time. Overall did 2 scouts in 2 days and realized that it wont get any better. Why? Just not enough active players. Thats all. Only reason why DW doesnt work for me. I like the game, no doubt but was just expecting more players looking for squads in the lobby, something like that. Having said that, I will logout now. Broken-hearted :(

Anyhow great independent project you have here. Thumbs up and keep it up!

That's too bad. :(

And a bit unusual, in my experience.

What's your timezone, or normal play-time?

UTC+1. I am in Germany. Of course, could be that most others are dreaming sweet dreams when I am online, heh.

Hey poot. I don't know about you, but really, most of the time I can find scouts when I want to - and I'm supposedly the one who's not supposed to lol (from Asia region)

It's possible that you were unlucky. Maybe it just so happened that when you logged in, coincidentally everyone else had something on. All I can say is, stick around a bit more, and see if you have more luck, because honestly speaking, I'm supposed to be the one bitching about this (nobody from Asia here). There are several Europeans, so it's weird that you aren't able to find anyone. Like I said, could be coincidence.

There's alot of players from the UK area here so shouldn't be too far off of you. About how many players in the lobby when you were on? 24 online right now, and I would consider that a little under normal.

Shouldn't be that hard to find a scout. It's the main thing most of us do. Some people are busy in travels and such, but scouts happen all the time.

Keep with us a little longer if you can, maybe it was just some odd luck.

Also, maybe that idea I brought up some time ago about being notified that someone wants to scout should be looked into. I sometimes am inactive on the lobby too, but I'm ready to scout. Either I'm watching some Youtube, doing homework, or taking a quick nap, so yeah...

pootie.. i'm suprised about that. There are a bunch of people in the UK who play and scout with Newbies... i suppose you have hit a bit of strange week in that at least 3 of those regulars are not here at all at the moment.

it is an unusual situation... i think Karz suggestion does need looking into but i also think people need to be proactive about finding scouts.

I also think that the main purpose of the Marshalls was supposed to be scouting with new people and that almost none of them now do this. I understand why but I would suggest that the existing Marshalls should all stand down if they cant honestly say they have been on a newbie SS scout in the last week and a bunch of other people should be made marshalls.

I suggested ages ago that there should be more than one type of marshal... the long service/responsible citizen badge where you are given the mute, boot powers in the lobby and the the darkwind ambassador badge that gives you the job of organising ss scouts.

Ultimately, as I've stated before - other than the short comings in documentation I stated - the "waiting" to play game is one of the draw backs of Dark-Wind.

But that said, otherwise I love it entirely. Please don't take my whining to mean I won't continue. Hey, I'm like one of the original Car Wars / Mad Max fans out there.

But that all said - it would be nice if the "waiting" game were somehow worked around. What does that require? Greater server capacity? Prolly. And what does that require? More money? Well... I suppose that equates to more subscribers. And what does that equate to? Pleasing the masses.

Get my drift?

:-)

The waiting game has a lot to do with sam wanting as many ' live' players in each event as possible, to give the real flavour of DW. But i agree a system of mission tutorials between races that earnt money and gave skill and awareness of the game functions is desperately needed ( and hopefully being worked on ) i myself find it very odd that an European timed player, could not find any scouts for two days.

Of course if a new member is lobby shy ( not everybody shouts out hello day 1 or even after ) scouts can be missed.

I found when i first started the best route was to ask active players ( denoted in white ) via pm, if they wanted to take a new guy out, 9/10 they would say yes and form a scout, off course marshals are there to help new players that are having difficulty getting into scouts, i myself have been off for a week, and dont know the situation for how many marshals may have been on, but saying that, the community normally isnt shy to initiate a new member into there ranks.

I think you was very unlucky, were the memnbers Serephe, FireFly, TWKprime not about, i know they scout manically.

I hope you reconsider, and join us again where im more than certain you will find some ooogily critters to go out with.

I agree grog. I'd really love to have someone flesh out these mission tutorials as a set of narrative descriptions like the other roleplay missions. Maybe you could consider it?  :cyclops:

Yes, I'll prioritise this, Karz. Probably best done as a verbal message with the 'Head of JD' popping up?

Awesome! Hmm how about a "ding" or "ping" or a sound that people will recognize? A verbal message might get annoying if more than one person clicks on the button at the same time.

Sam I'd also like to help with the mission writing if possible :D

...or possibly another box in the client that shows all players who are currently seeking a scout? along with a simple click of a button in that box to join/remove yourself from that list.

eg:

-----------------------------------

Baal (SS eliminators,1234)
Grograt(SS killers,1234)
-----------------------------------
* Join/Leave list
----------------------------------

The tutorials should take new players through several viable tactics and important skills eg: camping a hill, using cover to disrupt the enemy, fleing off road (as happens during a scout training run) and thinning the enemy out if needed.

I agree this is an important issue as scouting is a very important part of DW and joining one should be made as easy as possible, espcially for new guys.

I wasn't thinking about these as scouting tutorials as such. More of a 'tour of stuff you can do in DW' to help show off the depth of the game and help the player answer the 'what do I do next?' question. Stuff like doing races, travelling betwen towns, courier missions, trading.

As far as the wanting to scout button... Why not have the players name in the lobby change color after selecting this new button? Perhaps putting the abbreviation for the town they want to scout from next to them if they aren't looking for people in SS?

I think a seperate box in the client is the most immediately visible way for the information to be presented UD.

i do feel their is a need for the squad name and pw to be shown (as well as the town) so that every1 who missed a post of it in the lobby (ie: loged in after it was announced) can just see the information plainly withought having to a) ask for it again or b)scroll the text chat to find it.

This would be what 'My Scouting Squad' is for, I think.  If the people in the list set their squad up as their 'My Scouting Squad' people could just click their name and jump right to the squad, ready to go.

That would make it pretty easy, perhaps also having it stop allowing people to join into it once a certain CR has been hit or total car count. Which could be set by the squad owner before making it open to the lobby.
