If Fallout had car combat, it would be like Darkwind. But what if Darkwind had indoor areas? Would it be like Fallout?

It's a random thought that suddenly came into my mind. Darkwind has great outdoor environments, but we haven't seen any indoor areas yet. For all the destruction that the Sun has wreaked upon Earth, there should be a lot of unexplored ruins, with technology and ancient secrets abound.

And I'm thinking, what if Darkwind had indoor areas? What if Evan had many ruined factories, underground bunkers or strange facilities that people had left behind before the apocalypse? What would they look like?

I think, they'd look something like Fallout.

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/a/a5/Fo1_Vault_13_Level_3.png

With the technological prowess of Torque, indoor areas are most certainly a possibility, especially given that all maps in DW are instanced. Finding indoor areas would be the same procedure as Scouting or Traveling - form squad, click "Find Ruined Areas".

You would be notified that your squad has found a ruin, so you start the event. Now you go in, with cars. You can choose to come out, or you can choose to stay in your car - entirely up to you, but the odds are favored towards the peds and against the cars, since cars don't have much space to manoeuvre.

You and your friends go in, each with 3 peds armed with shotguns and rifles. As you go in, immediately you notice the tunnel ahead has an automated laser turret, set to fire on you guys. All of you send your men to take cover, while firing at the turret. One ped goes down, his head cut off by the laser, but at last the turret is destroyed. Satisfied, you guys forge onward confidently, and split off to cover more ground.

Suddenly, these huge mutant insects spawn out of a breeding hole from a crack in the wall. Your men fire off at the insects; elsewhere, your friends are busy fending off NPC peds who have also come in search of loot.

Suddenly, the NPC peds get overrun by mutant insects too, which have come out of another crack in the wall. Soon, you and your friends end up fighting these insects. The insects are overpowering you all, and you have no choice but to run back to your cars.

All of you make it back to your cars, but the insects are still following. Ah hah, but now you have the upper hand in firepower! Your Heavy Gat tears through the insects quickly, disposing of them in just 4 turns. Once done, you guys go back to search for more loot and treasures.

This is just one possible scenario in DW. The possibilities of indoor areas, with strategic placements, are endless, because we can go crazy with the designs. Unlike outdoors scouting, indoors scouting will be very tense, because most of the time you'll be navigating on foot. Your peds will not survive many attacks, so you will need to play cautiously.

If any of you have played Jagged Alliance or Fallout Tactics, think of it as those games, in a massive online mode. Now if that's not cool, I don't know what is B)

Of course, Sam's probably got his hands tied with bugs and other works-in-progress. Still, the thought of claustrophobic spaces, cooperating with friends and fearing for your lives because you might just die at any instant...just imagine the tension of the setting.

massive shopping malls to drive around maybe,as a combat or race venue, different levels to jump between scattered obstacles that could be a random feature each race.

shopping mall with cars

This driver has the right idea

How_To_Go_Shopping_In_Your_Car

off course every large shopping complex has an even larger car park, all those on / off ramps.

it wasnt demoed i tell ya

But as too dungeons, not sure about that ... ruined factories, universities and places with large built up areas would be cool, Just image GTA but with our engine

Awww Marrkos don't be grumpy

It's a fairly tangential idea so might not happen, but this 'into the ruins' idea has actually been on my 'to do sometime' list for a long time.

Sure, not everyone here likes the idea of gameplay not involving cars, but this idea would surely be optional.

Yeah...dungeons shouldn't be the right word to use, but you get my drift. Of course would be cool if there's an alternative to either use cars or go on foot, with pros and cons equally weighed.

Nice post Karz

There are a lot of us who would love to see these kind of ideas, don't be discouraged by theses car freeks ;)

I'd love to see nests of giant scorpions that charge your peds/apaches ripping their limbs/doors of them.

I didn't know Marrkos was a car freak, I only thought old age was getting to his moods :p

Jokes aside, ped combat really reminds me a lot of Jagged Alliance. And I think that is a hot damn good thing, for DW to be comparable to a cult classic.

Not grumpy, and not a car freak.

But, this is Darkwind: War on Wheels.  It is turn-based vehicular combat.

This is not a pedestrian's game/world, and it shows:

a. Pedestrian combat is rudimentary at best.  Very little strategy, virtually no tactics, poor movement, low survivability.

b. Days/weeks of sickness/injury after very little exposure to the environment, single-hit kills from many of the enemy creatures.

All of that stuff is 'just the way it is' when we are in our cars battling it out.  But, put the pedestrian front-and-center, and all of that has to be dealt with directly, and doing so will not be trivial.

There are so many other things that are core to the game that need to be worked on, that my reaction is:

What Marrkos said.

While I love kicking 6-10 peds out of a box van during a scout...I dunno about 'CQB' with the current ped-semi-engine.

However, I love the idea of finding a ruins; be it a mall, old factory, whatever. This was sort of discussed previously, with some good ideas concerning 'uncommon' equipment being discovered if your gang chooses to stay long enough to scour the region (meaning, multiple encounters on a single scout).

It was put forward, the longer/more encounters you stayed through, the better chance of discovering 'special' items.

...oh, and; What Marrkos said.

I know. I recognized this, therefore I said "Of course, Sam's probably got his hands tied with bugs and other works-in-progress." I am suggesting this on the hypothetical scenario when all's been said and done regarding the game's pressing issues, including any positive changes made to ped combat.

Which is probably unlikely to happen anytime soon (pressing issues cleared), but shoot, I had an idea so off it goes to the Suggestions forum!

Yes, Karz'...in a perfect world, Sam would be so rolling in dough from subscribers that he could license one of the better FPS engines to use for ped combat that would allow switching between members of your squad, weapons selection, stance changes, etc...and life would be grand.

...file this one under 'perchance to dream.'

That's 'cause you're old and your reflexes are gone. CoD4 FTMFW!!!

...that being said...I referenced FPS only for the 'view' of firing from your peds...my bad for not being clearer and expanding on that subject.

You would, of course, have to retain the turn-based gameplay because of multiple gangers on both sides...but expanded (think jagged alliance, red faction (?) etc) ganger interaction and options for movement, stance....

There? Happy now you old arthritic, eyesight failing, irritable bowel syndromed fart?

:p luv ya
