Basically sponsorship earns your camp substantial amounts of fame, which in turn will allow it to support more buildings and therefore produce more rare hardware. But also, when camp attacks come in it will be self-limiting based on how many you can actually defend. (Even if you're strictly PvE-only, you will have to fight NPC attacks).
