This is an advanced warning that I'm planning to complete the transfer to the more powerful servers on Wednesday morning, approx 10am. server time.

The game should only be down for a few minutes, as I have moved as much as possible already.

Bah.. I answered this one before but it got deleted (we had 2 versions of the databases running concurrently and causing mayhem for a while).

Answer: it's to save money. I wanted to upgrade the main database server and have it in an ISP where I could hire more game servers as necessary. The Irish ISP I have been with have increased their prices by a factor of at least 5, so I had no option to upgrade anything with them, only to stay on the contract I was already on (which I had since Jan 2006).

Basically, for the same price as the irish server I have 10x the bandwidth, 12x the RAM, 38x the hard disk space, and 3x the CPU

edit: mostly...using the breadcrumbs causes the error message

edit 2: seems to be working now

There was a post from Alo about the encoding being borked, but it looks like it got deleted as well.

It is still borked, by the way.

Yeah, the encoding of the text as it appears in the forum and posts.

For instance, in Lord Foul's post on skill caps, his apostrophes are replaced with question marks.

The Portuguese instructions title has funky characters in it instead of the accented letters.

Stuff like that.

edit: the Gateway RP forum....the Gaelic (?) I can never remember how to spell.

Right. Most likely just a problem when I backed up & restored the forum database. Apostrophes seem to be ok now ''''''''' !

Can you update the title for the Grainne, so it doesn't display the weird question mark?

Bad first impression. :(

The problem is, that page is displaying in Unicode (I think) but the encoding of the fada above the e (é) is in ISO Latin 1. Your page headers need an encoding meta tag in them.

yeah, it actually does appear to be related to the server and not the database (I just saw it on a page unrelated to the database). I didn't change any web code so it's possibly an Apache (webserver) option..

I always thought these announcement posts should be locked by default.  ;)
