I guess I don't know what that means precisely...  what does 'full re-skin' mean?

By full re-skin I mean redrawing pretty much everything and trying to improve the base image quality.

Well I'm not just cutting out or dropping a new color over what is already there; each base image has required redrawing key panel and sculptural lines of the vehicle, smoothing out degraded and pixelated areas, and sharpening most other details. Where possible I've tried to reposition zones on the texture image so they fall into place better on the model.

It sounds like all of us are probably using pretty different techniques toward a similar final result, although I've set my photoshop files up nearly exactly like Vikking's symph.

It'd be great if you could try, Parduz. Could you let me know your email and I'll send you the Stormer and the bus

Sam when you acquire these models are they already .dts or in the native format? Also, if you want to divvy up the new musclecars, maybe we can have them skinned post-apocalypse before they get introduced?

Lastly, is there any way for you to keep some of the old clean skins available too... I'm thinking of the Flashes with the rainbow and red camo, which I didnt re-create.

They're in 3dstudio (.3ds) format when I get them. It takes about 3 hours per vehicle to rig them, export them, make the database entries and other data details, images for website and in-game GUIs, etc. The work you guys are doing is saving at least half of the work, which is great! (and you're doing it better than I would manage)

I've just finished the new cars, so you can grab them here:

Yes, sure. Although they now look a bit out-of-place with their non-plated windows etc..?

Yeah that's probably it.

I was planning on setting up an archive of old skins (though I don't have some older versions).

That's a lot more work than I imagined.

Nice, they all look better in the model viewer except the Flail (but I'll get on fixing that right away :P)

BTW Sam, do you think we could apply a damage texture as it is done on the vehicles, to the bumper and spikes too (engines, ...)?

I would like to provide 2 rust textures I have been using on the 2axles.

They are 1600x1200, retouched. 3 Mb each, jpeg.

I'd like to offer two NASCAR skins. This car is long overdue for more variety in its appearance.

One is a traditional color-change - just altering the color and changing the number designation. The other is a total repaint, for a "duty" vehicle. Note that the dark car is actually midnight blue, not black.

Would it be possible to add a 'refresh media' function to the showmodels utility so we don't have to restart the client every time we change the textures?

How I made rust:

Fill a layer with red 50 (blue/green 0), add 30% gaussian noise, monochrome (under effects), then gaussian blur that with a 1 pixel radius.

Make another layer over this, make it monochrome, set your two colours to 20% and 80%. Do "difference clouds" (it's under filter->render) enough times until you get an interesting pattern, preferably with some dark swirlies to it.

Set your difference cloud layer to "overlay" and you're pretty much there. You might want to nudge the brightness and contrast up or down depending on how dark, over all, your rust was.

Then just do a little brush work (I have some nice, bizarre brushes for this) to add extra rust drips hither and yon.

Or you could use my approach, which is to use a clone stamp from a rust image at maybe 50%-70% opacity..?

Thanks for the nascar skins neko.. I'll add them when patching in the rest :cyclops:

edit: the compression on the green one is a bit heavy, perhaps.

LOL! What do you mean apart from Sam? He's got to be the biggest computer nerd here, considering the insane coding he does!

P.S. I dont find nerd to be an offensive term anymore... computer geeks rule the world!

That's odd. Both cars have the same compression... I'll see what I can do about retouching it.

Edit: If it's about the white around the numbers, that's because of the font I used... it's a Subway font (as in the sandwich shop), so the tops of the numbers are little arrows. Doesn't show that well at that resolution, though.

Further Edit: Oh, I see what you mean. I'll have to remake it completely... but I'll have a few more to go with it. Junk that one for now. =^_^=

Yeah, I saw they were both compressed heavily, but it didn't create a problem with the dark blue one.

I always go thru media files and optimise them before adding them to the game, and your files are the first time I've seen them over-compressed already. Most artists have no concept of the analality of programmers who want to squeeze every last kilobyte out of their download size
