While I am very fond of the NPC quotes (which probably explains why half of the quotes in game were suggested by me ;) ), I've noticed that many in the community don't care for them much.

So, I came up with a way to give them an actual in-game function (possibly making Darkwind the first MMO where NPC conversations actually matter ;) ) :

Tie each NPC quote to the mentality and psychology of the gang spouting it.

In this way, players could learn to see which kind of quotes indicates which kind of NPC behaviour. Of course, eventually our lovely wiki would feature a complete index page of all quotes and their related behavioural patterns, but that's where all Darkwind secrets end up. Eventually ;)

Currently, I don't know how many different sets of NPC behaviour there are, but if the AI is expanded and improved, certain quotes could indicate everything from gang members that never run away if they are outnumbered to enemies that are likely to flee if a few of their number dies or passes beyond 500 m, from the likelihood of the NPC to continue to fire upon you when you are down to which actual combat tactics they prefer, and perhaps even give a slight indication of the level of their skills and courage.

Eventually, this would make NPC quotes both entertaining and immersive from a roleplaying perspective, and useful tidbits of information that might help you to play the game better.

Of course, this would require many and well-written quotes. But I hear that there are some poor players shanghaied into writing for the Darkwind Gazette. Perhaps you devs could just order those poor sobs to spit out tons of quotes?

...

Oh, yeah. Damn.

Heh, yes that would be good. It's an expansion of the current system where NPC gangs have themed quotes, but the themes themselves don't particularly reflect any gameplay style right now.

I've noticed some dislike for them as well, but I support them. It gives the character character. After all, it reminds me of Fallout 2.

Thus I like the funny ones and the rough-and-insulting ones.

One of my favorites is still Cassidy's from Fallout 2: "Wish I had a limit break." Hey, I mean Final Fantasy 7 still existed in the world, so its not necessarily out of character either. :)
