Virgil 'Witchetty' Grubb surveyed the scene of the repulse of the latest Eviscerator attempt to hold up the 'Old Bones' convoy. Various chassis sat smoking, their crews fled or dead with others being pulled from their sodden doom by the winch of Jovian.

He sighed and listened into the continuing argument between the scout and the recently promoted leader Riley Robinson. Riley's twitches and guttural speech gave away that he had recently used zerk and it was unclear if he was about to laugh or growl when he spoke.

Nova Miller was reiterating what a bad idea it was to take any loot cars on a run to the Vault, indeed if Riley had not been transferring to the camp, it wouldn't have been an issue. When Riley's words began getting a few of the others to argue for taking the good salvage she knew it was a lost cause.

Virgil watched as Nova walked away from Riley and went to speak with the crews of the Jovian and the Leviathan - probably checking that they would still have enough power to climb hills under combat conditions. Once all was ready Virgil climbed back aboard Leviathan and waited for the convoy to roll on.

'Multiple unfriendlies front - close' were the words Virgil always dreaded hearing, as Leviathan slewed hard to the right Virgil let the momentum swing him around to his Mortar position. As the rear of the lorry fishtailed around Virgil could see an almost living mass of Eviscerator vehicles, mostly fast rigs as they came screaming in at the convoy. He watched with horror as the loot drivers dumped their rides and sprinted to get on their original rides.

Young Hill mistimed his step from the Garbage Truck and judging how his neck twisted was dead before he hit the ground as he was struck by one of the three escort buzzers. Virgil could see Riley hammering on the side hatch of Jovian but the doors wouldn't open. Just then Virgil heard the heavy metal clang of their own hatch being secured by Tony Cross. Tony paused to stare hard at Virgil before returning to his gunnery position.

Virgil forced his eyes back to his mortar as Riley was lost in a cloud of dust and debris from the tide of incoming rocket fire and gunnery. He busied himself firing as fast as he could, desperately trying not to be distracted by the melee happening less than a hundred meters away. He saw the scout Osprey desperately running from the fight, huge rents on its armour, and the buzzers were doing their best to contain the wave of cars but were being quickly overrun.

Quickly his view was obscured by the smoke from the front smoke generators as they struggled hard to climb out of the bowl they were in. Leviathan was shuddering from weapons fire both their own and that of the enemy. As they cleared the smoke Virgil could see Guardian and Guardsman firing into the massed cars while the Red Right Hand was traling debris from its side and rear as it attempted to disengage. And then suddenly out of the smoke Virgil could see Riley, running at an enemy Flail firing his rifle. Then his head turned to red mist as an Eviscerator gunner finally found his mark.

Virgil suddenly realised that they were still climbing and they may well not make it away from this one. Suddenly the smashed Red Right Hand slewed hard to the right and downhill racing straight towards the enemy pack. He could now clearly see the mangled remains of the rear of the car and he knew they weren't able to fight their way through - they were trying to draw fire and scatter the enemy to give the lorries a chance.

Red Right Hand plowed into the pack and was literlly torn apart by the Eviscerators, who continued to fire into the car even though it was clear noboby could be alive inside twisted shell of a buzzer. A slight change in the tone of the engine told him that they had cleared the crest of the hill.

Several kilometres later finally Leviathan, Jovian and their two remaining escorts managed to shake off pursuit thankfully due to Guardsman holding the line down to its last few rounds of ammunition killing the faster chasers.

As they cleared the area Tony Cross unlocked the side hatch, turned to Virgil and said 'Remember this, this is why we don't pick up salvage chassis on a convoy run'.

'Charles' slumped back in his seat. Hidden in the corner of Texan Tavern, his group rarely welcome in the merchant stronghold. They had been lying low for quite some time. building strength behind the scenes and waiting for their moment.

This was more than a kick in the teeth. The Scavengers had just lost some important equipment and licking wounds. Now this.

The telegram sharing the horrible news slipped from his feeble hand. 'Charles' slipped into a reverie. He would not be able to lead the into battle much longer. What were they to do?

"To the Braves!" he muttered, finally. And surreptitiously the Scavengers honoured their friends in toast.

Phil Hahn, leader of the Black Legion watched the recording put out by the Vault Dwellers.

"That there is every convoys worst nightmare... Scout asleep at the wheel, half dead loot along for the ride, caught with your panties downhill from what looks like every race car on the circuit gunned up and ready to go."

OOC - Great write up Nine, sorry for your loss.
