I've returned from a long time away, and I realise that I'm rubbish at rear gunning. Pretty good at front gunning. Pretty good at running away. Pretty good at lorries. But I can't get the hang of rear facing weapons.

So some questions:
- Is it as important as some people say?
- What are the things I need to remember (other than - stop dogfighting to point your front guns at peope - they aren't there)
- What are your top tips for fighting with rear guns better?

alot of factors, depending on chassy and skill of gangers, low courage guys with heave recoil rear weapons can get dangerous when they start stressing, one option to try would be use a car big enoupg to fit front and rear weapons, i trained my new guys in apes with same front and rear weaponss, can close distance with front guns get close and turn away use the rear weapons, mostly use rear weapons because of the odd you get down south, run and gun mostly. jump in a morgan defence with rear weapon cars, get ssome expierience, alot of good playerss and newer ones play those regularly, we never lost one yet with 6 vs 24 or more.

high skill shooters - run and gun with lots of range.

Low skill is tougher, but you park or work the merge of engagement so the enemy just crests a hill(at shorter range) to your rear gun line of fire. Hammer gas and reengage over next hill.

I find rear guns nice to lure enemies around a corner, the enemies front guns will lose their firing arc and as long as you position properly and follow them as they go you wont lose yours and have full accuracy bonus. Also important to let enemies spread out a lot when you are using lower level gunners, can park in a chokepoint or on a hill and take em one at a time, and rolling in reverse towards them slowly will eliminate the accuracy reduction from being rear gunned.

Ive done a bit of trader escorts over my time here and find running and gunning the best method. Ive adopted that for lorries too. 5iver put me onto it.

Its easier to control the fight. You can move away from the enemy and limit the amount of guns on you, while in the open. Things get tough, get moving.

Before I had great gunners I used Car Rifles for the range to help get some hits on them first. If I failed to do this I found I was pushing crud up hill and taking lots of hits. Just run away. I want to be able to hit pretty well at 120m as a guide. Paired with a hmg or mmg is good. The enemy are pretty dumb and dont swerve much, so RLs can be good too.

Your speed effects your targeting a lot. Drive too fast and low skill guys wont cope. It also effects defensive driver skill. Best targeting speed is not best defensive driver speed. above 50mph targeting gets steadily more difficult. But you will take less and less hits, zig and zig, but keep up speed is also very effective.

Defensive driver skill

Cross over your vehicles to conserve ammo and armour. Make them change target.

Support with bals ftw

use drops can be good

Decoy vehicle can be ... better than gold... not enough can be said about this... taking away 3/4 of the attackers with a muscle car and slowly bring them to the party is always welcome. Don't rely on that tactic lol.

Fast flankers. I love ospreys, flails and stormers for this (recently reminded myself of how awesome the stormer is). Break back if need be and act as decoy or trail behind the convoy and shoot from behind.

Thats all I can think of atm.. Oh.. smoke

Pretty much as others have said - taking reduced accuracy for your guys as a given you need to find the spots that allow you to engage at a comfortable range for your gunners where the enemy are at their slowest.

Sitting facing down hill and hitting targets as they crest works well for low skill gunners, firing rear weapons along with the slope gives you a good start speed-wise for your next relocation. Treat it like a series of mini-line scouts.

Darth's point about front and rear gunned works really well and allows you to make better overall use of your armour and can save you some grief in a close-range head on.

Support from ballistics or passive dropped can be really useful in thinning the crowd out for you.

To be honest Val, a lot depends upon where you are scouting/travelling. Up North you can afford to be a little less disciplined. Further South more care needs to be taken in picking the right spots - particularly as you can often encounter NPCs with defensive driver.

Thank you all. I'm pretty good in SS and Elmsfield, where I scout a lot, but keen to get more Hero Points down South. It's been a while. I know the maps pretty well as a trader, but not as a fighter.

So I guess my plan is to practice some rear-gunned scouts in the North first.

Does everyone think forward gunned cars are a mistake south of Gateway?

yes.. although my scav experience in Shanty and Bl says you can manage with lighter armed cars that have both front and rears provided that your characters are good enough.

Depends on the town/maps - quite happily scouted Texan area with bpus, most of the maps give you places to take advantage of their hill climbing etc. I wouldn't want to try it from BL so much.
