It's been a few years since I last played and the user name I chose back when isn't one I use anymore.

Any way to change that? When I go into preferences it tells me that I can't.

Yeah, that's intentional (not a bug).
I don't like names being changed much because your name is your identity. But I can change it for you on a one-off basis; let me know what you want to change it to.
