"To Dennis!" Each hand raised a glass in tribute to their fallen brother. They might be a small gang, but they were loyal to each other, and each death was felt keenly.

One of the men winced as he raised his glass, then massaged his bandaged shoulder.

"You okay there, Donny?" the man next to him asked.

Donny nodded and then took another drink. "Yeah, Kim. I got knocked around pretty good by the militia yesterday. Lyn says it should all be fine in a week or so, but I'm still pretty stiff."

The hulking mutant on the other side of the table snorted. The eyepatch and empty sleeve of his jacket testified that it could have been far, far worse. "What is that, four, five times they've jumped us this month? Did we forget to pay protection or something?"

The leader, John, shook his head. "Nah, nothing like that. I've been hearing some rumors about a change at the top. In the way they look at their job. Like they're not just about protecting the town no more, but how they gotta make a profit too, so they can keep their cars running."

The other mutant, the gang's chief mechanic, asked, "Don't the town pay them for that? They got all these mechanics and spare parts around, what more do they need?"

John answered, "It ain't enough, I guess. Looks like when they see us coming back banged up or with some good stuff, they're going to try and take it away from us. We're going to have to get smarter about bringing it back, or we're going have more like what happened to Donny yesterday."

Lyn leaned over the table and grinned. "Or, we can just take it from them, instead." She spoke in a low voice. "Look. We've been hunting Xena's for a while now. Yeah, there were those two incidents with HoD, but usually we've been hitting Xena. But they don't seem to care. So what if we stop risking our lives trying to clean up the scum out in the wilds, and change to cleaning up the scum right here in town?"

There were some mutters from the rest of the group as the idea sank in. John whistled quietly. "That's kinda evil, Lyn. But, it could work. We'd have to kiss this place goodbye though. They for sure ain't gonna let us back in through the gates if we start hunting them."

This thought sobered the group up. Most of them were from Somerset and had never been anywhere else. The gang's camp was outside the walls already, but never coming back inside again was a big step.

John finished off his drink and then cleared his throat. "Well, whatever. We don't have to decide for sure right now. Let's get back to camp and turn in. We'll do a couple patrols in the morning, then we can talk about it after we've had time to think."

OOC: just an fyi, there's still some discussion over whether it's a change in the encounter rules, or something I brought on myself. Or even a combination of both. This post is roleplay only. They're allowed to make incorrect assumptions or jump to conclusions in their own universe. And at this point, they (and I) don't know which way they'll go.
