see. told you. :)

so, i got the zip to unzip. next, i was unsure of what to do. the jar file looked to be the thing to click, so i clicked it. logged into the lobby, and it said restart to launch the engine. i did, but got the following errors:

"Error: java.io.IOException: unzip: not found

10:30 AM *** Warning: unable to unpack latest engine version! -- please ensure that the game client is not running and restart the lobby to try again ***"

the game client is not running, cause i hadn't even seen it yet. next, i found the client zip in the darkwind folder and unzipped that.

still get the same error.

i then copied the client file into the main darkwind folder, and still get the same error.

am i missing a step ot two?

thanks again,

joe

Joer-

No, you don't need the older version. Sorry for the trouble...

Here's the thing: all patches arrive as .zips (behind the scenes) and are unzipped automatically by the java lobby. That's fine.

The engine (.app) is the exception.. I couldn't get Java to unzip it properly using its internal zip functions, so I have it make a system call instead. Now, my guess is that your version of OSX doesn't have an unzip system call...

If you unzip the engine into the root folder (not into the gameEngine folder which is where the zip will be), then it should be ok...

BTW: what version of OSX do you use? I'll have to figure out another way to unzip the game engine...

EDIT: Sorry, I see you already copied the .app into the root folder. You will still see the error message, but the game should actually run, I think..

EDIT2: maybe you can help me? Try opening a terminal window and typing:
unzip<enter>
Do you get an error message?

EDIT3: I found an interesting page here:
http://homepage.mac.com/roger_jolly/software/index.html
Can you try installing the ' Zip Tools for Mac OS X 1.0.1' (it's the very last link on the page). After this, does the java lobby error go away?

-OS 10.2.8

-i installed Zip Tools for Mac, but still get the same error.

-by open a terminal, do you mean the chat window? if so, i did, but all i said was 'unzip' to the lobby. i'm afraid i don't know what terminal you mean.

-from the lobby, yesterday i was able to spectate a race. the lobby launched the game for me. i tried it again this morning, but got the old error message about the bad ....acutally i forget already....was it BAD MINCORD?

and thanks again...

Terminal is in Application/Utilities folder on your Hard Drive.

Bad Mincord is a bug we experience with OsX, I'm currently using a patched client to check if it is corrected or not.
In case in happens, wait a few minutes and try to log again in the race.

BTW: what are the specs of your Mac?

specs? no idea. i'll have to look around later...

still doesn't launch automatically, but i can get it to lauch by right clicking on an event from the jar lobby. it has to be a currently running game so that i can spectate, but once it's launched i can play other games. though, as soon as it goes into a game, i kinda have to let it....settle in. if i start clicking buttons and moving the mouse, it freezes, and i have to force quit or shutdown. if i let it sit 20-30 seconds, it seems to be ok.

also, my internet connection (wireless) seems to be slightly slower this week. do you think it may not be a constant signal? what would happen to the game if the signal came in slight spurts?

Joer,

I'm rather confused about your actual problem now...
1) Apparently you are able to launch the client through the Java lobby, by clicking on launch client once you select a race. This is the way it is supposed to work.
2) As I previously stated: bad min cord something is a graphic bug that cause the game client engine to crash, and as you discovered it, it is better to do not move too soon once it is connected to the game server.
3) if you are able to launch, it means your game client is installed and running. There should be an application named: DarkwindOSXClient.app
in the Darkwind Full folder. You can also launch it alone, but the java lobby is far more useful than the lobby in the client. It will be removed shortly anyway.
Please check in Darkwind Full/gameEngine/ there is a file named DarkwindOSXClient.app.zip in it and compare dates with DarkwindOSXClient.app in order to determine which is latest.
Thanks.

ok, so then that IS how it's supposed to launch the game? by right clicking on the event?

based on the error message i was getting, and your responses, i thought it was supposed to launch automatically. so then, despite the error message saying it can't unzip, everything on that front is good?

got a new one now. i played a few games today, with minor problems, but got it to run. now, though, it totally crashes when the game is loading, and i reach the lighting sequence...

:(

Thanks all...

Joer- yes, you will at the moment continue to get the error message in the Java lobby, even when it's actually capable of running the game. I'll take a look at fixing it ASAP...

Aaah! Just wasted far too long getting Java to do the unzipping itself. Not so easy, as it seems to mess up file attributes, or at least not restore them well enough to keep OSX happy.

Anyway... it does appear to be a known issue that OSX 10.2 doesn't have unzip as default. But the download I found the other day (Zip Tools for Mac) does appear to contain what you need. I tried downloading it myself and it definitely has a version of unzip in it. I guess your problem now might be that it's not installing where Java can find it.

I assume you did run the package installer, as well as downloading it? (I mean, you not only doubleclicked the dmg file to mount the archive as a disk image, but you also opened the "Zip Tools Mac OSX" diskdrive icon, and doubleclicked the "Zip Tools For Max OSX 1.0.pkg" ..?

I hope that makes sense!

yes, i installed it too.

:)

it didn't work at ALL. it gave error messages whenever i tried to unzip anything. don't recall the exact error message now, but something about something not being compatable. there was RED in the error message too. that's bad, right?

;)

thanks vik, i think i'm gonna be a little better in the arena than on the race track...
