I had two scouts hit 50 at the same time, so I decided to test once and for all which would result in safer travels: Pathfinder or Negotiator.

They used identical vehicles: a Pike with 3.2v8, rear Light Rocket, 17 unit tank, 84 bulk for cargo.

Both traveled identical paths and were resolved immediately following each other, to experience the same pirate levels.  I alternated which one I resolved first.  They always traveled at 45mph, so each could run two travels per day.

Total time: just over two weeks.

S = Somerset
G = Gateway
B = Badlands
t = traders (they offered to truce first)
T = truced with pirates
E = escaped from pirates
* = encounter resolved first

(Sorry for the odd formatting, I gave up trying to line it up.)

I'll leave it up to you to interpret the results, I'm just presenting the data.

Unfortunately, the test from 100 to 150 will have to wait for a new contestant.  One of the scouts capped out on the last run just before 100.  I'll need to get another training scout to 100 as a Pathfinder to continue the test.

As we are comparing side-by-side, will the actual faction standings make any difference? It will affect the type of encounters he had and the number of them, but it should affect both gangers equally.

On a relative comparison it looks like they had about the same number of encounters overall, the pathfinder tended to encounter more traders than baddies and the negotiator managed to truce with baddies more frequently.

I am not sure the sample set is big enough for statistically significant findings, but it seems to match what the stats are supposed to do.

I'd say it would matter who you could and couldn't truce. If you were liked it would truce more often.

Not a full analyst – just a simple comparison between a pathfinder and a negotiator from the same gang, running the same route with the same set-up.

It would matter about who like/disliked his gang if we were comparing between different gangs, but as it's a simple comparison of two scouts from the same gang, it doesn't matter so much.

Interesting to see that there isn’t that much difference between the total numbers of encounters, and in fact the Pathfinder had more encounters. I would have expected that pathfinder would have had slightly less encounters.

The fact that the negotiator was able to truce more encounters fits to the description of spec.

Keep at it, would like to see the next set of results and see if pathfinder does start to reduce the number of encounters or not, at the higher speeds.

It would matter greatly, I think, for someone with fairly balanced reps--all reps just below the truce threshold (with neg) would favor PF, all reps just above would greatly favor neg. I also think gang fame plays a role--I (globally legendary) have never had trouble trucing the legendary pirates down south at "liked" or better, or even higher levels of "appreciated", without negotiator.

it will have an impact on truce rates wont it? if one happened to meet friendly raiders and the other unfriendly mutants for their pirate encounters then the coincidence will make one appear to be able to truce pirates better.

Agreed, but both gangers should meet the same proportion of friendlies to enemies given a sufficiently large sample.

The real question is whether this is too small a sample for us to guarantee an even distribution. I suspect we need more data points.
