OOC - A different take on the back story of DW told from one gangs perception - enjoy.

The day was drawing to a close and the sun was slowly sinking out of sight behind the hills over looking Elmsfield. A cool breeze had started to blow off the lakes, and smoke was rising up from chimneys all over town as fires were lit against the evening chill. People were settling down to wait out the night. But all around the activity never stopped, there were still convoys arriving over the lake bridge and the tavern was busy as people looked to take the edge off the day.

To one side of the main town, stood a low building, barely higher that a man’s head, constructed like so many other around Elmsfield, built from the remains of much older buildings and roofed with scrap metal. It was dug into the ground to help keep it cooler during the day and warmer at night. It’s large metal doors were closed and firmly barred for the night, only a few glimmers of light showing that the building was even occupied.

Inside those great doors and down the entry ramp you entered the garage space. It was high enough to hold a truck and big enough that a dozen cars could worked on at any one time. Around the garage sides were many parking bays set back into the walls, dark in the low evening light but there was just enough to make out the shapes a number of different cars and the glint of weapon barrels. But even here which was normally the busiest space of the whole building the lights were low and the space quiet.

Heading on towards the rear of the building and the great hall, a place where the occupiers would meet to eat and relax. Various doors lead away from the hall towards the private quarters of the gangers.

It was here that the gangers and workers had gathered with their families this evening. As the light dimmed in the high windows, the fire pit in the centre of the room had been lit and it filled the whole space with a warm glow. A great feast had been laid out on long tables and music was playing in the background. Kids were running around playing, mechanics and armourers sat with gangers chatting about the day. A gentle sense of peace filled the room, as the gang relaxed after the hard heat of the day.

Ansome Aaron Millar the local leader of The Ansome Cousin Jacks and one of their longest serving members of the Cousins stood up and calling for everyone to gather round.

“On this day of the year we gather together to feast and celebrate the Founding Day! It falls to the leader to tell you the tale of backalong.” He shouts out, “So be it, let every Cousin gather round where they can hear and let me tell you the story.”

Everyone was used to obeying orders from him and quickly gathered around the Fit Pit. The kids were hushed and settled down by their parents and everyone turned to face the centre, where Aaron stood. A fairly large man but not given to fat, his features told a tale of too much sun and stress. Once he had been the leader of the Cousin but had stepped down when Paddypaw Smith had emerged as the driving force of the gang. Now he was second in command and led the Elmsfield Cousins.

“First let me just wet my whistle, so to speak,” He called out and quickly drained off a long glass of beer to the amusement of all gathered there, “There much better, can someone refill this for me?” He laughed. Quickly a fresh glass of beer was passed forward.

“Now you all know the story but we keep it alive by telling regularly, so that the youngest cheel to the oldest granfer can repeat it, and we never forget our past.”

“Agone before the sun turned teasy and the world turned to ashes, there was a green land of high moors, rolling hills and pleasant valleys. Surrounded by the wide seas, the people of this land tealed teddies in the fields and fished it’s seas for food but most of all they dug under its hills, and brought forth many treasures.”

“The people were proud and they were independent, they stood tall and took no grief from the upcountry folks. They called their land Kernow and they loved it.”

“In time the treasures from under the earth began to run out, and the people were worried, how would they care for their families. But their skills were welcomed in many places, and many of the diggers move away. But they never forgot home and the families left behind farming the land and fishing its seas. And whenever they could they found work for the Cousins left at home, and soon their were many families living in the strange lands”

Aaron paused and took a drink, looking around; he voice grew lower and darker. “Now the dark times began, the sun woke from its sleep and was angry with the world. It raised its fiery fist and stuck out at the world. It brought low many a mighty land, turning them to burnt wastelands where nothing lived or even grew.”

The fire flared up at this point, making a few around the room jump. The extra light made Aaron’s features stand out even more.

“The peoples that were left could see that the sun was raising its fist to the world and many ran around in despair; they fling themselves from high places so that they didn’t have to face what was coming.”

“I’m sorry to say that many from Kernow know this despair. But the diggers around the world didn’t despair; they had been told how to escape, messages passed from Cousin to Cousin told them how. And quickly those that could, made their way home. Once there they did what they did best, they dug.”

“Quickly the diggers created great places under the hills where the people could shelter from the sun’s anger. Others gathered together food and water to fill them with. They did the best they could but time was short. And once the sun’s burning eye turned towards them, they vanished under the ground and blocked the entrances.”

“Once again the world burnt and suffered. It shuddered and shifted, many of the great shelters collapsed as the very rocks around them moved in pain. But not all, some survived and kept the people safe.”

Also as if it was listening to the story as well, the fire died back here and the room some how seemed darker.

“Again the people know despair, they didn’t know what the world was like outside. They didn’t know whether it safe to come out. So they endured underground, until their supplies were almost gone.”

He looked around and smile crossed his face “Then a miracle happened, a radio that hadn’t worked since the sun’s fury suddenly sparked into life! It was a message from a Cousin Jack, saying that the people could return to the surface once more. Amidst much rejoicing the people dug out of the shelter into a much changed world.”

“It was a tough world, much changed from the old world. The green rolling hills and valleys had gone. The seas which once feed the people were now foul and horrid. Monsters now roamed the lands. The people were shocked but they endured, they grow in strength and numbers.”

“From that day when the radio started working we have taken the name of Cousin Jack in honour of that unknown one who had the power to call us back into the world.”

He laughed, and took another long drink, “So come lets us celebrate, and rejoice.” His raised his glass in a toast “Cousin Jack!”

And all around the fire pit jumped up with a great shout and the feasting began.
