As part of the wilderness combats that I'm currently working on, I'm just implementing chassis damage and vehicles burning/exploding. Here's how these things will work (they're not part of the live game yet):

Chassis damage: this can happen any time, though it is particularly likely when a vehicle's armour is in bad shape. A damaged chassis has reduced toughness (so its armour is less effective) as well as a reduced top speed. A damaged chassis' suspension/handling doesn't perform so well, and can be unpredictable. A chassis below 25% health is unfixable; otherwise chassis damage can be repaired in a mechanic?s shop: this is expensive and slow, and as a rule of thumb a chassis damaged below about 55% will cost more to fix than it?s actually worth.

Vehicles catching fire: can happen following a heavy crash impact or explosion damage (e.g. from a mine), or (more easily) whenever damage is taken from flamethrowers or flaming oil jets, or whenever the engine, installed flamethrowers or flaming oil jet weapons are hit by enemy fire. Everything in the car takes damage while it?s on fire, and the fire may go out at any time. A burning vehicle may explode, especially if it has flamethrowers, flaming oil jets, missiles or rockets installed. When a burning car resigns from an event, the fire is automatically put out. In a wilderness combat, characters can exit a burning vehicle in order to escape it (as you will see later, it?s not so easy to resign from a wilderness combat as it is from an in-town, organised event, since you need to actually escape your enemy to do so, and there are no referees around to make sure they let you).
