This patch simplifies the pvp rules, and makes them (I hope) better for both those who like pvp play and those who don't. Judging by the vote on this (65 to 6) I think the vast majority of players agree.

Two things to note before I outline the current rules:

1. I will reset everyone's "change pvp flag" delay timer in case they changed it within the last 14 days and want to re-change now

2. There may be bugs, so please bear with me.

THE FUNDAMENTALS


Gangs have a pvp flag. This lets them be open or closed for pvp. This flag cannot be switched more often than once every 14 days.

Squads have a pvp flag. It will be 'on' if any of the squad's vehicles belong to players with an open flag, and will be 'off' otherwise.

If a squad's flag is on, it can attempt to intercept other squads, and can be intercepted by other pvp squads. The likelihood of a successful intercept depends on the opposing scouts (and the vehicles they're in). Note that squads returning from a scout can never be intercepted.

In the maps around the northern towns (SS,Elms,GW), a pre-computed 'bounty' can be paid in order to force a truce. This is primarily to allow safe travels here if you are generally open to pvp but don't currently have the time or inclination to run a pvp battle. The size of the bounty depends on the CRs of the vehicles in the squad and the fame of the gangs that own them.

If a squad's pvp flag is off, it can't intercept or be intercepted anywhere.


ADDITIONAL RULES & INFO

It is possible to target and fire your guns at squadmates cars, although you are liable to lose reputation with the local town and its primary faction by doing so. Note also that, if you attack a squadmate, then other members of the squad will be able to attack you without losing reputation.

In pvp combats, there are some special safeguards to reduce ganger deaths. Firstly, a 500 skill medic is always assumed to be available. Secondly, there are never return encounters after a pvp combat.

Pvp combats yield greater skill gains than regular pve ones.

Any gang with a car in a squad that is used to intercept another squad will have their pvp flag set to 'on'.

I thought you said somewhere that the squad owners PvP flag determines the PvP status of the squad?

not sure if this is the right place, but i just cannot get patches to apply for me without massive retrying, and without knowing at the end when it finally works what i did right. i have vista, and i'm:

uninstalling darkwind, including removing the directory

running the installer as admin

running the game the first time as admin

it does do the counting thing it does when patching, but i always always get the out of date message, and restarting the lobby does not seem to help

any advice?

Sam did say he mentioned squad owner determining PVP status of squad at one point early in this recent PVP discussion, but it was not made part of the vote.  That's not the way it has worked in the past, and since it was not being voted on, it is not currently going to be changed. Here is Sam's post in the Poll thread:

But I removed that in the current vote/proposal, so the existing rule will remain: the pvp status of the squad is 'on' if any current vehicle owners have their flag 'on'. Hmm. Running the lobby/patcher program as admin *should* do the trick. You're sure it's installed in a folder that's not read-only?

i just:

uninstalled

deleted the darkwind dir

reinstalled as an admin

used the security tab in windows to force full control for users and auth users

ran the game the first time as an admin

it did count, but it seemed very fast, and only counted to 100 something, not 600 something like i've seen it do before

still no luck. could this somehow be firewall related? not if it seems to attempt to patch, right?

Not firewall I think, the patching is all done over the normal web port (80)

However, maybe it's related to antivirus software?, I know some of them will roll back 'unauthorised' file changes without telling you

there's actually only 1 client file being patched here: it's darkwind/client/scripts/client.cs.dso
- you could try opening up this folder to one side as you try the patch, and watch the folder to see if the file updates and then switches back to the old version
- if you're seeing 60 or whatever files changing, it's presumably because you don't have a properly patched client to start with (caused by the same problem no doubt)

seems to have resolved itself. i got the out of date message, played a couple quick encounters anyway, closed it, went to a meeting, came back and restarted and it says i'm up to date. windows explorer did crash and restart in between, not sure how that could be related but windows is odd. maybe i just needed to be patient? doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would run asynchronously...
anyway, thanks again for your time and being soooo responsive.

I found the bug, thanks. I had copied code from peds to vehicles and should have changed one line

This is complete CRAP!

I was winning the Paintball League. By ALOT. Nobody could really catch me without a major disaster. I joined the last week in an event, just now. The guy closest to me was Boon, gang fingers, and I had him by 8 points coming into the final week. Him and StCrispin were in the game. Boon was on my team. In the first 2 rounds, he shot and painted all 3 of my guys. Obviously this was not as the game was intended, or so I hope. Boom flat out was unsportsmanlike. He said nothing, but StCrispin just kept saying "Thank Joel." He was obviously aware what Boon was going to do.

Want to see what it takes to have a 5 year player quit Dark-wind?

I'm done.
Boon is a complete loser, a scumbag. You guys can have all of my crap. I'm not coming back. What a great community DW has turned into.

I was unaway of what boon planned but it is a direct result of the new own team targetting that was championed by Joel.  I FEAR live ammo ped now...

Boon's idea to smoke you (own team) was a good strategic move for league play.  He was winning.  Only you securing 14 points or more would have changed that.  and everyone knows you win EVERY ped combat you enter due to being overpowered and able to kill any "non-God" player at 400m.  Off subject:  thats why alot of people complain about you being allowed in ped, and why they want skill limits or SCL type league divisions for ped...  but anyway

Personally I think own team targeting has no place in Leagues.  with own team targetting, when your competition is on your team theres little reason NOT to remove them.  other than points lost.

FYI...  Boon lost.  I won.  now you need 13 to beat him instead of 14.

BOTTOM LINE:  please no same team targetting in League events!

First id like to say sorry for being a bitch that was a durty trick even for me leagl or not.
It was a sper of the moment idea to cap my win knowing you would own the faild if i didnt act fast, and with the rule change hay why not.

@Longo: don't get mad, get even. The idea with this rule chance is to de-sanitize the game, and stop it being overly controlling in terms of tactics and roleplay. You should be able to make Boonwolf pay for what he did, thereby stopping him trying that tactic again.

@Crispin: I don't know whether you said 'thank Joel' over and over as was claimed, since I didn't check. However, I would say this: thank Boonwolf - he did the deed, not Joel, and has to stand by his own actions.
