Matthew was missing two toes, one ear and God knows how many teeth. Not that his dental hygeine was bad... it's just that he was addicted to Novocaine, and used to have a tooth extracted every couple of months." Everyone at the table chuckled. "He was just this side of un-killable. One time he got knocked out cold in a Sonic that was ripped to shreds by enemy fire... then he woke up, fixed the engine, and drove the damned thing home!" "The Lunchbox," mumbled 'Downtown' Henry Brown, shaking his head and smiling. "It was a tough little unit, but it wasn't as tough as ol' Matty." "Yeah," continued J-Rod, "we sold the thing for scrap when he got back to town... it was totaled. So what does he do? He fixes up ANOTHER Sonic, slaps some day-glo, goblin-green paint on it and calls it the Green Hornet." More laughter. "He finally got his ticket punched when he was behind the wheel of the Purplesaurus Rex, our first 'real' Ram Car. It was a beauty... four-liter Sunrise with a Roll Cage and a Re-Ram, and a Gat up front just to add insult to injury. "Unfortunately, the Butane Boys hit us from behind that time. Matt tried to get around the first corner and onward to the rallying point, but some re-re in a sick dog of an S.U.V. cut him off. Matt, he didn't want to crush this pathetic S.U.V. with his Ram, so he jerked the handbrake. The S.U.V. got away...but Matt didn't. "Rockets and missiles started slamming into the P-Rex, bouncing it all over the place. He did a 360 at one point... dont know if it was intentional or involuntary. Anyway, he managed to make it around the first corner, but he wasn't able to make up for his lost speed. "One of the Butane boys caught up with him and blew a hole right through the P-Rex, back-to-front. Matt was out cold, engine destroyed, flames all over. You'd think that would be all she wrote, right? "Wrong. The Butane bitch that took him out made the mistake of getting to close. The P-Rex exploded like a supernova, instantly killing Matt... AND instantly killing that Butane scumbag that took him out. He died, but he took that S.O.B. with him. "To Matthew Perez," said J-Rod, lifting his glass. "Toughest son of a gun this gang has ever seen, and a fighter to the end." -- "And then there was Gary Figueroa... 'Scary' Gary. He was one of our best Scouts. I had the honor of serving with him in the Wingman. Dude must have been born with a steering wheel in his hands... he could really make that Moose dance. "One time, in a Scout that turned ugly, the Wingman got hit so hard that the engine quit on us. There we were, coasting to a stop, both front guns blown to hell, and enemy vehicles circling for the kill. It looked like curtains for us. "Gary jumps out of the damned car with his shotgun. He sees an enemy Butterfly II having trouble getting up a steep incline on the side of a massive sand dune just a dozen meters away, and runs up to the driver's-side door. He taps on the window with the barrel of the shotty. The driver turns and sees him standing there. Gary smiles. "Then he pumps a round right in the guy's face. The guy's brains splatter all over the Gunner's face. The Gunner screams like a little girl, bails out and surrenders. That's right... Gary took out a Windsor with one blast from a 12-guage. "He got us out of that jam, but his luck ran out a couple weeks later. Right side of his car got breached, and he caught some shrapnel in the brain. One second later, he was a corpse. "Remember, gang... it doesn't matter how tough you are, or how brave you are... sometimes you're the hammer, and sometimes you're the nail. That's just how the world works. So live each moment as if it's your last... because you never know, it just might be." J-Rod raised his glass again. "Here's to 'Scary' Gary." 4saken The 4saken Darkwind Guru Renegade Group: Members Posts: 2,282 Joined: Jan 1, 2008 Fresh back from a botched solo scout ending with him and 2 others fighting in the slave pits of Firelight like common pirates, Lt. Frank, leader of the 4saken, gets a grim message: Miriam Galliano and Ricky Peterson are dead, killed during an ambush on the lorry they were protecting. There was an ambush and in the chaos their Flash clipped the back of the lorry, which had slid out on some loose rocks while spinning to reverse direction. This caught their car on fire. Despite flagging their surrender, the evil Napalm Lullaby fired on them anyway. Miriam managed to bail out on foot but was gunned down, and Ricky was shot to shreds while in the car unconscious. His car later exploded with him in it. The lorry managed to kill two of the enemy pirates before the others escaped. They will be missed. Ricky was one of our best scouts, still improving [167 and not capped], and Miriam was an up-and-coming gunner specializing in sniping. Let's all raise a glass. And get our gunbarrels nice and clean. Killed by the first shot from a Texan Strongarm rear MG at 50M as it ran for its life. She had just dispatched 3 cars with her rifle and stayed outside the car one too many seconds. Garcia -- the Man with No Ears -- were incapacitated by flames and smoke when the Brimstone caught fire during a desperate battle against Groton Gladiators. Myra and Gary stayed on-board while the Gunner and Scout bailed out, in hopes that the flames would go out. Myra did her best to position the Brimstone between the remaining enemies and its pedestrian crew members, using the Apache as a rolling bullet-proof shield. She succeeded in saving both of them. But the flames did not go out. They were unconscious when the Brimstone exploded. Myra's brother Charles, in the Canyonero, watched the explosion in his rear-view mirror. There was nothing he could do but watch. Thanks to some heroic maneuvers by members of Coolerheads, as well as the crew of the Canyonero, the battle was won by The Gateway Guardians. Steven and Myra were the only friendly casualties. Everyone else made it home safely. Here's to Myra and Steven. In tha short history of this-here gang, we've seen more than a few of us get blown up, shot up, or burnt up on their first go-round. Heck, there's only six of us now and that's after we just hired a new guy. We've lost at least that many. Probably a bunch more'n that. Anyway, Del Holliday was one o' the finest gunners to ever join our outfit. That ain't sayin' much, but it's true. Anyway, he was goin' for his third straight arena win when things got real ugly faster'n I've ever seen 'em get that way before. First lap at some track he ain't seen before, and as usual he drops behind early so's he can watch everyone else blowin' each other to hell. Second turn, shootin' starts, sure enuff two or three of 'em get dumped inna ditch right away while the others keep bangin' on each other. Ol' Del played it just a little too close. He saw one o' the cars crawlin' outta tha ditch at about 35, but he was doin' 95 and was sure he'd blow right by and drift through the corner no problem. Instead, he slammed his passenger door into the other guy's front end. Coroner sez he died instantly, more or less, cuz ya don't live too long after an impact that punches yer jawbone through yer brain. Anyway, let's raise up a glass and toast Del Holliday! Here's to going from not-a-scratch to not-a-pulse in less than half a second! If there was a Loose Cannons Hall of Fame you can be damn sure Del earned his spot, heck, just on entertainment value alone.
