okay first off, im an aesthetics guy when it comes to game design. I'm one of those fruit-loops who believe visuals and ambiance are just as important as gameplay.
I'm totally loving this game. I'm super fond of the game-play, pacing, and especially the character management aspect.
I've noticed that the one thing this game really lacks is art. A game this good shouldn't settle for "The graphics get the job done"
As such, Ive put together a little mockup of an idea ive had for slowly injecting more art into the game.

A huge portion of character management involves static images of the character model. To put it bluntly, the 3d models are downright garish, and while perfectly acceptable for gameplay, they aren't that fun to look at all the time. Especially as character management (and becoming emotionally attached to your characters despite the high mortality rate) is a huge element of the game.

My suggestion is that more stylized 2d art is used for portraits, such as in the menus during vehicle combat. In my example mockup I have based the sketches on the existing character models, so those models could still be used for gameplay.

I read that there were plans for making characters customizable, and the 2D portraits could compliment such a system absurdly easily (a paper doll-like format, you know)

please tell me what you think. I felt that this would be an effective means of making the game prettier without needing too many technical adjustments.

Very nice indeed, how much off your time would it take to do for all models we have at the moment :rolleyes:

Yes, excellent sketching there Ganthor!

Subscribers can currently upload complete re-workings of the character textures, but I think what you're probably referring to here is the idea of having a set of specific named items on each character that can be switched..? e.g. in your example you'd be able to select hair colour, sunglasses colour etc. -- this is an eminently do-able thing, yes, and the idea of matching it with a paper-doll system on the website and GUIs would work too.

Baldur's Gate!!! Holyyyy macaroni Baldur's Gate! And Jagged Alliance, and Realms of Arkania, and....

I actually like this a lot. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Generic Ganger Model #3, though I appreciate the effort made into creating the default skins and models. I'd much rather have portraits too to represent my guys.

Also, nice sketches!

It would be even cooler if all of the guns had different images!

I'm quite sure that the tank gun and the Gatling gun look quite different from one another, so if there was an artist out there interested in coming up with different pics for them it would be sweet!

I'm no artist (especially not in 2d), but I could probably put together some new 3d models for different weapon types, if sam was interested in implementing them.

Another thing that would be great, would be to be able to make your own customizable sketches to show up on the car/occupant's/character menu!
For the character menu of course, it would show the sketched image and not the character model, and for the character's body out in the wilderness, it would just show the model that your drawing has been based around. People can handle that... I've handled my muties looking exactly like humans despite what their character page tells me. :cyclops:
However, most people would probably go with these, because they're just great. B)

woah, awesome feedback. ill try to reply to everyone! (this community is aaawesome)

@Bastiel-
thanks!

@Grogat-

right now I have school, plus I'm trying to avoid art jobs that aren't paying at the moment, but I might be able to make an exception here, time permitted.
My guess would be possible a few weeks, maybe less.
I'd love it if somebody could send me larger images of each character model to work off of.

@serephe-
thanks!

@sam-
That's exactly what I was referring to, yes.
For the way things are now though, just solid image portraits would suffice. Perhaps in the case of custom skins, players could have the option of uploading a custom portrait art or just going with the current model-rendering technique. (that's how it works right? I haven't found anyone who's customized their character skins yet)

@karz-
thanks! i haven't played any of those games! wat am I doooing here? :D

@goat-
thanks!

@firefly-
thanks!

@johnny-
iknowrite? +5-15% sellability!

@tempest-

I personally don't have much experience drawing a vast variety of guns, but I probably shouldn't be trusted for that job, as I would want to make them all in cute SD scale and before you know it this'd be a post-apocalypse Choro Q racing game.. which would be amazing, and awesome... to me but obviously not true to the original intent.

@ wolfsbane-
I was going to say, it shouldn't be too hard to adjust/re-color some 3d models of cool looking guns for this. (cool gun models are available for free download EVERYWHERE. srsly.)

@burden-
lol! I totally suggested that when replying to sam! seems like were thinking the same thing more or less.

I'd rather see that we can change the character icons ourselves than see new standard ones since I've given all my ganger models Classy Pink Suits. (the new models, I avoid the presumably older ones like the plague mostly because of the snapshot photo thingys that make me wanna throw them out of the car).

If someone doesnt like your admittedly very nice looking icons they should be allowed to enter their own ones.

Gotta say those sketches look way better than the fugly 3d model snapshots though.

yeah uploading your own portrait art was actually one of my suggestions, which would follow through nicely and easily if/when the idea is implemented.

also if anyone has access to bigger pictures of the already existent character models i'd appreciate it.

A quick perusal of your gang shows that you are, in fact, using the 'older' original models, and avoiding the newer ones. :)
