Can't for the life of me remember this game's name:

3rd person TBT WW 2 strategy game. Multi-level buildings, stairs, ramps...outdoor environments...if it was cold out you could see the misted breath of your guys (and sometimes theirs!).

Excellent weapons selections...dynamic reloading...excellent combat...'goto' and 'travel' orders...stand, crouch, prone...it was excellent.

Overwatch...fog of war.... I wish I could find it or even figure out what the game was. If you were an X-Com fan you'd love this game.

It was mission-based...argh! Can't find it anywhere. Oh well.

Anyone? Bueller?

Soldiers at War? It was another of the good isometric style of games, WW2 themed.

Soldiers at War on Gamespot

That game was from SSI, one of the better wargame companies of the era. I still have that game in a box somewhere, was one of the best.

These are still fairly new games, which is why I never mentioned them. But Men of War is one of my favorite games of the last 3-4 years. I got the expansion about 2 days before my PC died, never got the chance to even install it.

Another game that might be of interest if you like those types is Combat Mission: Shock Force. I haven't tried the USMC expansion yet though.

That's not it, Tog'.... Thanks for looking though!

Sry Ser'...not WoW...this game has real death. Challenge. Real world physics. Strategy. ...you know, all the things WoW doesn't. Thanks for playing though. :D

I tried the "Marine Corps Expansion," all I got was shot, blown up and bayonetted.

Damon, do you remember roughly how old it was? Military games are my genre of choice, so I've probably played just about every "decent" military pc game since 1986. Since I can't find my box of DOS games, I can't browse through them by box images or manual covers. But I might be able to find it by cross-checking the estimated date of release.

As a former US Army soldier, the USMC expansion for CM:SF wasn't something I had been totally interested in. I have nothing against the USMC, but their equipment and combat mission is slightly different than what I'm used to. Still, it looks like something fun to try out later. The expansion did add several new features that I would like to try out too.

They also announced plans for CM: Afghanistan, based on the 80's conflict there. Again, the forces are not my preferred choice, but the game itself looks interesting. I will keep my eye on the development and see how it looks towards release time.

One of the newer games that I enjoyed playing was "7.62 High Calibre", a modern version of Jagged Alliance. I had a ton of fun with that game, and it had a mix option of both turn-based and real-time. The weapons and equipment selection was huge, and it was what I always dreamed the old Jagged Alliance and similar games would become. There are also some mods available for it, which makes replayability even greater.

I tried that game, I do love those ATP (Active time Pause?) or whatever they call it systems... but I gave up on that game for a little reason called... Russian QA  ;)

Not even darkwind ( :p) ships with a bug that will initiate when I move 3m from my saved spot, direction didn't matter, I loaded, moved 3 steps, crashed :(

I wonder if I should give it another go...

Its called "smart pause". High Calibre was indeed a very nice game, not like Hired Guns, which really sucked (unfortunatly). Time for the russians to mess up JA3, eh? =)

Anybody remembers X-Com: Alliance? Got stomped in when Hasbro Interactive was eaten, I think. Heres the Trailer - welcome to the past, hehe!

A friend of mine that used to work for Microprose had given me some early info on X-Com: Alliance as Genesis. Because it was an FPS, I wasn't at all interested. And unfortunately for their team, they were shut down several months later. RIP Microprose.

Hired Guns: Jagged Edge wasn't too bad of a game, but it wasn't too great either. What started off as a good idea got all screwed up when too many developers started getting mixed. About half-way through the development several of the original team left and new guys came aboard, and then they started having legal issues with SF.

JA3 has been talked about to death. They seem to revive the topic every couple of years, but nothing happened. After such a long wait, it almost reminds me of the whole Duke Nukem incident.

If you guys like the Jagged Alliance and X-Com style of gameplay and haven't given 7.62 HC a try, you should. It's actually a very good game, with a lot more options. If you come across Abandonware versions of old games you like, try DOSBox. It usually runs them well even on the latest PC.

Hired Guns was no bad idea but very bad executed and, in the common east-europe-style, mostly unpatched. Spawning right in front of the enemies that kill you outright while you cant hit a barndoor (nor their head while your barrel is attached to it..), grenade lobbing AI-awesomeness that wipe out most of your team. No sorry - as the kids say: Fail!

While this thread revived so much memories about X-com/JA-games Ive decided to have another look at Laser Squad Nemesis - another game that claims to be made by the "true" X-Com devs. But it seems to be abadonned since years.

LSN still seems to be quite played though.

Seriously, Sam has shown that turn-based and physics can be great friends. I really wish someone would have the balls to create a turn based game using today's technology.

New information released.

Looks less and less like the X-COM we all knew, with every bit of news they drop.

Its a FPS/shooter ugh

i'm still buying so I guess there plan of "generic fps slap some old franchise we own to sucker some fans" worked.

I bet you end up fighting the ALIEN SCUM and then decide to lobby the worlds government to fund your PMC and I hope at the end they play a graphic updated version of the x-com intro haha

Also check out the rebelstar tactics (spelling?) title for the GBA its like a X-Com lite (no base) consisting of just the tactical combat but the tac part is really well done with a great multiplayer mode. (4 unique races)

I played that 7.66 game and it too is great fun if you can get past the "russiany" dev and dialouge.

JA2 with the 1.13 patch is the best of this type of strategy game and it too is really old, but the patch is actively developed. Let me know if anyone wants to play a multiplayer JA2 match!

I'm waiting for UFO: Extraterrestials 2. If they get that right sans the bugs, it might be the next best thing to hope for.

Jagged Alliance 2 is awesome on every level, period. I have been advocating this for a long time: Darkwind is proof that a turn based game does not have to be a borefest of watching static iron pieces move. It is not a graphical masterpiece, but it's proof that you can have physics, huge explosions and all the technical shenanigans that FPS developers always tout as "NEXT GEN" in a turn based game.

You can mod the first one to a pretty cool x-com like game but unfortunately the classic x-com is still superior gameplay wise

X-com does have very dated graphics but it is an amazing game.

If you can't handle the graphics of x-com seriously give 1.13 patched JA2 a try the graphics are great for what it is and I can play that over and over just to try the harder merc starts and their dialogue.

Someone was working on a remake/mod of X-com where it was 2 player with one player controlling the aliens and I would REALLY like to find that again if anyone knows what it was called.
