Hmm I like the idea of spending points or having some kind of tokens that you can use to get first dibs on rarer stuff (per item with token-costs varying depending on the rareness) that way everyone who scouts would get some semi-guaranteed rewards for it eventually even if they don't turn in a lot of cash due to bad luck.

I think it should be so that it takes several scouts to get enough to buy a rare item you really want so it's all not too easy to get.

However I still need to think about this more to see if it has any more potentially game-breaking holes in it that need plugging. :)

The points approach has merit too, and it would make it fairer so that one hero couldn't grab everything rare.

I don't think requesting items is good though, since everyone will request the rare items and they'll stop being rare. I prefer to have the actual production of different items in the game being outside the control of players.

How about this:

Each time you receive a bounty, you receive some hero points in that town. The points don't expire over time, but only when you spend them. Any time you buy an item from the mechanic which is not yet on the open market, you spend some of the points.

Quote:
Maybe the reputation system should be town based instead?
It would make more sense.
You could be wanted in a specific town and a hero in another one.

Good point. When we have NPC bounty hunters, this could have a big impact, and also you'll be given more missions in the towns where you have good fame+rep than in the other. This is moving towards your original feudal idea for the game, vikk. I'll definitely implement this.  B)

BTW I added a new fairly-rare type of ballistic weapon today: the mounted mortar. This is a larger and more powerful weapon than the car grenade launcher.

I think the points should expire though. Maybe after a week? If you fought off some bandits a month ago, are the townsfolk really going to care anymore if it's overrun with bandits again?

Plus, I think we'll just be turning a "who checks the autoshop first" battle into a "who checks the autoshop first with enough points" battle.

And when I suggested requested items, I didn't mean it would always be there. Most likely, it wouldn't I'd imagine.

Maybe these "hero points" should just be Rep or Fame points, which already do have some expiry built-in and then Rep and Fame also become limited resources by "spending" them on rarer items.

Then this buying rare items idea becomes the classic RPG/Strategy game concept of converting resources. In this case, you would have the option of "converting" Fame or Rep into rarer items, which would then limit your ability to immediately buy more rare items, or take on higher level missions, etc. and would also motivate people to keep up their Fame and Rep.

This is also seems like a good trade-off because those "evil" gangs that have really low fame and rep could get their rare items from stealing mission items, attacking traders, etc. The "good" gangs would get their rare items from spending Fame and Rep points.

I like Atomic Punk comments.
It would lead in reducing your fame points and make them even more useful.

Well, they have to be locally earned, or they miss my point entirely, as someone could easily sit back at somerset and never risk his rare cars that he buys at badlands, while someone else loses men and equipment keeping the trade routes open and never sees a rare chassis for sale. I really like Sam's idea, as it gives another dimension.

Hmm, had another thought...perhaps if you were a devious sort you could 'spend' points to get an estimation of what traders were bringing in a rare item and when, and attempt to intercept them before they made it to town...

Not sure if this would work well unless there were special rules/points for negative rep gangs..

I'm not sure about spending and using up fame/rep directly, it doesn't make much logical sense does it? Better to have separately named points to spend..?

Hmm, perhaps badguys could spend money to hear rumors, etc, and their fame/neg rep would increase their chances of getting accurate info...
