I've heard golden tales of lorrys, rare weapons, and other fun stuff. I'm here on a stopping point because of a mission (will have to wait til later to start it up again), and there is nothing here! It's all the items I can buy in Somerset.

Did I just arrive at a bad time or something?

That's good news, since that's the destination for my mail. I'm really working for that 500 dollar reward!

But if Gateway doesn't have anything different than Somerset, why would anyone go there? Just a stopping point for Badlands?

Slightly off topic: Seiler, I can leave a unit there tonight, using my messenger to hire more people if you want help in the area.

yeah, a stopping point. Also, since pirate activity is so high in Badlands, no new goods are getting thru anywhere.

Roger, so Gateway is pretty useless then. :(

But now I'm in Badlands. The weapons selection is better, but just the same old chassis here too.

The rarer stuff does arrive at both of these places (especially Badlands) but I guess it gets snapped up by whoever sees it first. (Each item arrives at a random time).

I don't want there to be an unlimited supply of rare stuff anywhere on the map, otherwise it's not rare.

I will however take a look at the trade calculations and see if I can make the rare items a bit easier to get.

Roger, sounds good! I know people have been doing a lot of shopping in these areas lately, so I was wondering if I was just unlucky.

Yeah, as it stands I haven't seen a rare chassis for sale since the Badlands opened, and I have no desire to compete with people who are online all day checking, but I would like to have access to new vehicles, otherwise, what is the point of caring whether the Truckstops are overrun?

Yep. I'm not sure the best way to ensure it though.. maybe limit how much stuff you can buy in 1 day? Or as you suggested before, make it so renowned local players get first choice of stuff.

Yeah I don't think there's a good way to do it at all, but one thing you didn't mention would be an auction system for the new rare stuff arriving in town with bids starting somewhat higher than what it will sell for in town normally, but that could mean the richer players always get the nice stuff first.

I don't really think it's broken and that rare stuff is too rare, it'll get better anyway when more towns open I hope.

Well the current system doesn't benefit the players that take risks in the more dangerous areas, and for simple gameplay reasons I think that's bad. There are plenty of ways to do it well, it's a matter of what works best with the Darkwind world, and currently I think it's too biased towards those who profit from a lot of safe hunts and then buy their vehicles from a place that they have no real investment in. It's a post apocalyptic world, and I don't think towns would sell so readily to a gang that never puts effort into defending a town when the local gangs need the vehices.

I like Seiler's idea here. Simply because it makes total sense from a realistic point of view as well as from a game play POV. I would think rep could be played out by area and add a dash of fame to get the choice picks of new products and even assignments. An auction wouldn't work though. That's not the point and then you're just playing who can outbid who.

OK, I'm thinking it could be tied to the receipt of bounties for killing difficult local pirates.

Let's say for each bounty you receive, you also get 'hero' status in the town for, say, 2 days. All hardware arriving into the town from NPC traders will be offered for sale to 'heroes' of that town 48 hours ahead of being available on the open market.

Good idea about missions too, speed. Perhaps local heroes are automatically 'passed' with regard to the fame requirement on a mission. I can't see that being realistic with reputation however, since you could easily be an untrustworthy gang yourself, even though you defend the town, and individuals wouldn't trust you with their goods.

thanks man! trying to make up for party boy.  ;)

I like that idea. 2 days may be a bit short but I dunno how fast stock comes in, so may be ok that way

Hmm I realize something is needed to give everyone a better shot at rare goods especially if you want to be more casual friendly, but won't this end up being the same way only with the people with hero status possibly buying up all the good stuff on the advanced market (only the ability to grab the good goods first would be restricted to a smaller number of elite players).

So would it really fix things long term aswell?

A restriction to how much you can buy per day would probably work out better, even though I'd personally find it gimping my rampant conspicuous consumerism style eventually :p.

Hero Status at the town level could be very fleeting, with a 10 point max and a 50% loss per week, requiring a very strong investment in the tougher towns, and making it much more likely that gangs just pulling into town can set up camp and be up on the curve in a few days. Also, I think that gangs which are more apt to hunt far out are, at the moment, also more likely to share the rare goods with other gangs that are helping in the town, not try and hoarde everything that comes through the gates as you imply.

Hmm, plus Hero status would force you to choose between getting good loot, or shooting the crap outta the car and missing out on some cash for town status.

You are assuming preferencial treatment due to helping out the town would result in the 'hero' buying out all the new stuff. Which is not necessarilly true. But perhaps the hero could request a special item or two. Like when you look for new chars, you can request a special ability - that kind of thing.

And I think if the status only lasts 2 days or so, it wouldn't be like you could actually corner the entire market - unless you were able to scout the area successfully daily maybe...

Or perhaps one could 'spend' points when specially requesting items.

Maybe the reputation system should be town based instead?
It would make more sense.
You could be wanted in a specific town and a hero in another one.

Shouldn't it be suad/gang based too?
A specific gang you are always attacking will hate you more than one you never attack. :cyclops:
