Hi all, would like to buy something ~no frills~ cheap suitable for solo courier runs from Somerset to Elmsfield.
I'd like to spend less than 40k.

I'd build something, but my last attempt was a steaming hot cup of fail, and I don't want to have to risk the funds on something doomed from the start again.

Thanks!

Buy a Pickup, there is usually one on the market, run it unarmed, they're great basic courier runners. They can outrun most pirates (as long as you can drive) and they have decent cargo space.

What about the 4L?

The only 3.2 for sale are way out of my budget, and the Mutant Maulers in the market come with a 2L.

4L won't fit in a PU.

EDIT: and a 3.2L engine from Jake is under 4400.

Thanks for the pointers. I got the truck and the engine, got everything installed, and now I just have to wait an hour to see if I can drive.

Heh, it's funny you mention that. My first try was with a Symph, but I went with the engine 1 size smaller than that to try to save weight. I think I lasted 5 turns.

The 3.2L pick up is a great cheap courier. Good speed, great cargo capacity, and some of the best off-road capability.

That last point is important. There are pirate cars that can run you down on the straight stretch, but nothing that can catch you can handle rough terrain half as well.

That pic should work as an avatar... only 100x100 pixels... file too big?

EDIT: by the way, "a steaming hot cup of fail" gave me a good laugh. Lemme know if you need some help outfitting that courier.

Max avatar size is 65x65, I'm not very good at manipulating images and keeping them appealing to look at.

Front 5 B
Rear 20 B
Left 12 B
Right 12 B
Top 5 B
Bottom 5 B

Offroad tires
5 cans of fuel

Should I take a scout?

You'll want more front armor - a car's nose takes a beating once you go off-road.

I'd say Front 15, rear 21, Left/right 18, top/bottom 6.

The little extra armor is worth the weight.

For fuel, increase the car's tank itself to carry fuel - you won't always have access to fuel cans (some towns periodically run out).

RE: avatar, mine is 100x100... wonder if that got changed at some point....

Personally, I say forget the phoenix/sunrise/pickup/etc and just try a courier van.

I'm still pretty new myself, but I started running a courier van between SS and Elms after my second week. The driver was fresh meat, neither driving or scouting skills above 5. I wanted something that I could buy from the shop if needed, wouldn't cost a huge amount of cash, could carry plenty of cargo, and should be capable of evading enemies.

I chose a courier van with max armor, exposed 4L engine, mine and spike droppers, and huge fuel tank. With the solo driver I had around 255 bulk left over for cargo/mail. That averaged out to about $8-12k per trip in mail, but sometimes I could get $22k or more from taxi + mail combo trips.

I lost the van and driver 2 days ago. But that was after having run trips back and forth for about 3 weeks and not a single encounter before that. I averaged about $20k per day, $150k per week, just from mail runs. That little van eventually made me about $500k in profits before it finally got zapped.

I found out that the van runs poorly, and even when equipped with spikes and mines and a 4L engine it just didn't stand much of a chance when the 2 attackers were phoenix/sunrise/etc interceptors.

Today I purchased a brand new courier van from Jake's. This one is a little different, equipped to run well but not have such a high value. It has a 3.2L engine, armor is 5 units per side of C grade, off-road tires, 15-unit fuel tank, no weapons. This setup cost me about $33k and only took about 4-5 hours to arrive. The CR is only 22, and it can go up to 445 miles on a full tank of gas. And now I can carry 325 bulk per trip.

In my opinion, such a vehicle is a great option. As long as you can make runs for a few days without being attacked, you should make enough profits to compensate for an eventual loss.

Just remember, if you are 100% certain you'll lose the vehicle, surrender it and save your driver. I learned that one the hard way after my previous driver got wasted (just made 55 scout too).

Thanks for the tips, I'll give that a try when I build up some funds.

What kind of speed could you make with that exposed engine on the first van you talked about?

I had it going pretty fast. It had a mine dropper and a spike dropper on the rear, and full B armor, so that did weigh it down a bit. I think I was hitting around 70-ish with a full load of mail, but the terrain (hills) around SS-Elms prevented me from really testing it out further.

Basically, I found that regardless of any weapons or droppers you might use on a courier van, it's probably not going to stand up against an encounter alone because the armor is weak and even the slightest shot will mess up your steering. Hence my new approach to just trying the lightly-armored and unarmed versions.
