Ok .... from a brand new players view point to Darkwind, what really needs to be shown via a video tutorial or a few smaller more directed tutorials.

I understand the tutorial as it stands doesn't explain use of F keyes or fire lines, what else is it missing, what can i add to a vid'

basic tutorial will contain the rudimentary of camera control and keyboard use in car selection

vehicle tutorial - assigning crew to vehicles, ammo selecting guns, targeting, fire lines, fire orders

Event tutorial - how to join, where to find ( lobby , website ) what can be done sub non sub etc

squad and scouts joining - finding player squad from lobby, pw joining, adding vehicle adding crew, starting the scout, when it starts what do they do next ,vehicle placement, use of chat,

very basic guidelines there, i know what i am going to try to achieve, but what do you think should be added, what blatantly simple task to older players is blatantly not apparent to a new player.

all suggestions gratefully received.

I actually started doing that a while ago, I used a recorder to record what I did, and I was going to voice it, I have some experience in that area, and I think I could do a couple quite nicely.

Not trying to steal your show, I've had this on my mind for a while.

(I made a couple of gameplay videos from recording footage, it was sloppy, and it was to upload to youtube, it wasn't very serious, or very good, but I know how to edit it properly, I would gladly give it a shot)

Might I sugest some co-operation? :)

This is a great idea, thanks guys. I guess the main thing is to keep it focused and cover a small number of related topics in each movie-clip. If you could provide a list of topics for each that would be cool too; they could be linked from the DW website.

This is what I had in mind for the first one, I made this list a little while back actually, so the structure might need a little change, I would record during a race event, the main pointers would be...

- How to Join an event
- How to drive the car
- How the ghost works
- How to corner, drifting, breaking (very basic)

The Second one would be a deathrace, first I would explain the difference between it and a death and a regular race.

- How to operate the guns
- Targeting lines, and weapon ranges (of the current weapon)
- How recoil will affect you, how stress and armor works
- Some advice, like how redding other players wont make friends
- Quick explanation how combat works, its straightforward enough.

One last could be a quick one about how the website works.
Also, think a separate one on scouting is needed?

Thanks for the offer firefly, you lay out what i had already put down anyway, so great minds think alike, as to co-op not sure how we could work this together, probably best we both do our own, more tutorials the better if you ask me, and it sounds like you was going for the more advanced stuff, i want to start at the very basics

I want to hear from newer players as to what they could not understand, what they only discovered via the forum and helpful information in lobby, what they just came across due to an odd click.

the stuff that is not easily discovered by Wiki or tutorial.

I will be using a cam' and editing software that allows me to add still frames, notations, soundtrack and voice over, off course all very unoffical.

i consider they should remain short and keep to one particular topic at a time, or watchers will bore easily and information will be lost. so will keep them to under 4 minutes per topic (hopefully )

so the very first would be: The Darkwind Lobby

your in the lobby, what do all these boxes mean, what is an event list and how can it be used, where do i actually play, is there anybody to ask for help etc

I was actually going to record something with fraps in a race event, and then add onto that, editing and alike, not sure how well it will work, but it should in theory

Wha...?
I thought it was only there to straighten out and emergency collision avoidance, not to mention, many of the chassis handbrake dramatically different.

Try handbrake turning an osprey, it's almost cheating.

FF, I saw a new player in the looby who asked the question "what does the handbrake do?" therefore it deserves a place in a video tutorial, no matter how basic the handbrake tutorail is, the likelihood is that it will be of some use to some one.

as will the most basic concepts to us old car wars players, who found this so similar to the paper game a lot came easy, we need to consider the cod 4 player that starts here, they are not used to this kind of start up or lack of full documentation, hence the simplest of details need to be shown.

Gods Grog, this is SUPER. It pains me that so much has faded from memory.

: puts on thinking cap :

...

First, try to be VERY conscious of the image quality. Crisp, clean, comparable to other developers promotional videos if at all possible. Remember at all times, this is a first impression. Be very careful about showing things in the video that may not show DW in the best light possible. Like clipping as one example, a blurry zoom as another. Use only the best skins. Cars for the most part are nice, be picky with ped meshes. Show some advanced content, tricked paintjobs/decals, beautiful maps. Be VERY discerning, you can bet the newcomer will be.

Sam, a tiny darker outline around a lot of interface items (like targeting lines) could go far to improve the appearance of these features. I'm not really an art guy, but there are simple little tricks.

What to include...?

Hand brake, handbrake, handbrake. Definitely. A simple 180, and maybe something fancy. Bootlegger, side armor rams, rapid far side weapon deployment, whatever. Get the player thinking about that simple little button, and give 'em one teensy reason to push it regularly.

Also be careful not to show F- items over cars until they have been covered, and when you do, be careful that they are clear, the new player will want to use his new knowledge.

Explain the *significance* of the F-key items. Try to give them "Eureka!" moments.
Why would I want to know driver names? (RP quests, high skill nicked gangers, whatever.)
What is active and why is that useful? (no points for shooting surrenders, wasted ammo, etc.)
Scoring in arena events, how does it affect your placement/prize? What happens if I resign the match, can I still get a prize?

How do I resign, why on earth would I want to?
"Brave is well and good, but in the world of Evan, alive is better."

Remember on that item: Many newcomers will have the mindset of making a brave show (even when solo), since death is trivial elsewhere. BREAK THAT. (but gently of course)

Play down high skill, show your examples with 8 skill gangers. SHOW that they are 8 skill gangers somehow. Assuming you can devise an attractive way to do so. Skilled gangers are a bonus, not the entirety of the game.

Maybe somehow reinforce that PVP is a valid playstyle that is encouraged, but if you do anything along that line, of course try to instill a respect for other players. (As I'm sure you would)
"An armed community is a polite community" and "We're here to have fun"
(An example of an exciting, friendly, respectful PVP match may go far there if intertwined with some more pertinent topic you are mentioning.)

Don't forget Ctrl-G. A hint on how it lies, and a bit on what it's good for.

How to get out of your car, how to get in. In fact, maybe a seperate ped tutorial altogether. Interface use, special skill interface (like medic maybe), ped scouts, glad matches, whatever. What happens when a ped gets hit, weapon or car.
Ways to mitigate risk. cover, crouch etc.

The community vernacular may be useful to define perhaps as the newcomer goes right into the lobby.
('Scouts', 'Travels', 'Peds', etc)

Explain that turns are 1 second units of time, gunners in Evan have exceptional reflexes, but still need at least a second on target before firing. etc.

Cover: how to minimize exposure by dividing enemy LOS. You don't come back from six rocket hits.

Maybe be careful about debated features that could change. I was scared witless by older guides from a harsher time, that and a couple of bad luck encounters really reinforced the trepidation towards getting out and playing. Be aware that the newcomer is wide eyed. EVERYTHING you show him has a *chance* of making a large impact.

:snip: :snip: :chop: :hack:

Sheesh always with the textwalls. sorry.
Yeah. Great, GREAT idea. Sorry to pollute you with my thinking, but I do hope there's something decent for you here.

No Red you keep that hat on, this is exactly the kind of input i am looking for, i need to take my jaded long term players hat off, and attempt the " what the hell is all this about " thinking

As to quality i am no spielberg and it will be stated that these tutorials are a player resource and representation of the game, saying that i am pretty anal, so i will do the best i can with limited resources and ability ;)

and i must remember to clean the parrot crap of my screen first B)

Excellent points, Rick.

Grog: in terms of making F-text legible etc.. if possible when doing this little bit, capture only part of the DW window in Fraps, rather than the whole thing. Because when you turn it into a youtube it will be reduced in size and generally messed up. Text gets illegible real quick.

From working with Fraps... is that even possible, capturing just part of the window?

you can have the text be readable, it mostly depends on what resolution you capture it in and what resolution you compress and upload it it in, in other words, doing the thing in "HD" is the way to go with readability...

As you say.

"What will happen if I push this?" try to look for every single button you can.

One item that scared me off of pushing buttons was "messing something up". So a couple items should be addressed imo.

The Record button on the replay camera. Will it tamper with the replay in some way? (this I still haven't dared push, to be honest)

Scheduling an event on the webpage. (e.g. DW:T) I saw the webpage as something more static than it is and was quite reluctant to tamper with it.

While it's in my head: Suspension length? What is that? Height? All of those of course.

@Sam: Anything that's just one solid color line really.

For the purposes of Grog's work:
Car selection circle
Fire arcs
Targetting lines
(perhaps indirect arcs, they are quite bad, but can be avoided in the tutorial, as there's more needed there than a simple highlight)

@RC items:
The "Event Diary" button struck me at first glance as some log of old events. Maybe "Event Bulletin Board" or something that sounds a bit more current?

The redundant function buttons between client and webpage, Grog'll want to cover those simultaneously, but there are some that you can't do both with. FL Glad matches comes to mind. New users will expect consistancy in the interface.

Another item on security <deleted for security reasons> If you didn't catch it PM me. I don't think that should be up here for all of posterity, in case it's decided to be an acceptable risk.

Edit: cleaned up significantly. Don't post when sleep deprived kiddies.

Grog: I (and others surely) am/are at your disposal in this. If there is anything I can offer I do so gladly.
A future PM or post with clear direction to point my thoughts would be helpful for me if they are desired. I don't want to bomb your thread with less than pertinent material (as seems my penchant), or run off other posters with incoherent textwalls.
