Christopher Miller steps up to the bartender, Doc, and asks for a swing of anything - he's just thirsty.

"Haven't seen you around these parts," says Doc.

"Nope! Just got here from down toward Sarsfield. Came through a maze of a canyon too, then got jumped at the gates! They turned back when I got close to the fence. You boys must have a pretty good militia around here."

The bartender eyes him warily, looking for signs of a troublemaker. He cautiously asks, "just when did you get here?"

Chris answers, "Just now! 4:07 am as I hit the gates. I found someone to refill the car while I took a breather."

Doc thinks he must be crazy. He knew some folks from "south" and "west" were coming in, but the last he heard they wouldn't be here till later in the morning.

Chris starts to laugh - a real, honest laugh that sets the bartender at ease. "You want to hear the funniest part? That Ellen 'Ellie Mae' Collins is the boss's best scout. 'You'd do good to learn from her,' he says. Heck, I beat her here didn't I!"

The bartender is curious now. "Just how did you beat her here. Didn't you both come from Sarsfield way?"

"Kinda. You see she's been waiting on the boss to give her the go ahead to come make contacts in Texan. The boss wants to maybe expand this way, so he told her to be ready and waiting. As soon as the boss heard the roads were clear, he radioed for her to go. What she didn't know is that I was waiting in a camp between here and Sarsfield." He gives a throaty laugh as he throws back his drink and motions for another. "So I've beaten her here by almost six hours! And to top it off the boss is happy with ME for beating the other gangs here as well."

The bartender chuckles. He's seen people come and go fast in this land. Let the kid have his laugh. Bragging rights don't come around that often. "Here kid. This one's on The Doc." He pours two glasses and they give a chinking salute, knowing it could always be the last one...

'Staff Sergean' Jeffrey Coney jumps out of his Buccaneer and stretches, he observes the area around him as only an experienced scout would. Seeing the bar he brushes himself down and walks in the doors.

" well i hear some beat me to the bar, so who's round is it "

Damon 'The Demon' and 'Deadeye' Sierra screech to a halt outside the Tombstone. The air feels leaden, heavy and oppressive, with a distinct after-taste of burnt hydro-carbons.

"Well this is it" says Damon. "Texan. The end of a long road"

"Stuff that" replys Deadeye. "Look who's at the bar! It must be Coney's round and I could do with a drink after the trip we've just had. Hey! Coney you old foney! Mines a double of whatever you're having."

Our pair of loveable deadbeats breeze into the tavern, grab a table, and survey the local crowd.

"I reckon there's some fine times to be had putting the smackdown on the local trouble makers, and some of the boys in here will be more then up for joining us on that trip" observes Damon.

"Could be" replies Deadeye, "but we'd better bolt a couple of bang-sticks onto that beater out the front before we play that game. Get yourself down the local hardware shop and see what they're packing."

Damon finishes his drink, stands up, and heads out to address the task at hand...

Ben White has a grin on his face, actually anyone who knows him well recognizes that this is the way he expresses something akin to shock.

What do you mean you picked up this guy, what did you say his name was,  Oliver... Efrain Oliver? you found him crawling through the dessert sickened like hed been walking for 10 days? Wonder what gang he belonged to, and you say he's a pretty fine heavy gunner? amazing...

Robert White nods

Well i'll take him to the hospital pronto, looks pretty bad they say a week in recovery.. dang!

[OOC - alright, so he doesn't arrive for another 11 hours, but I'll be in bed then...]

Sentries on the gates of Texan look out as they hear the sound of a lone engine, over-revving like crazy. In the darkness they can only make out a dim set of headlights. It is not until the vehicle gets within the glow of the spotlights on the gate that they can make it out.

It's a sunrise, in fairly good condition, though the dust and mud thrown up from its long journey partly obscure the decals upon it.

"Hey, Frank," calls one sentry to another. "Do you recognise that logo?"

"New on on me," Frank replies. "Not one of the regular bandits then. Must be one of those new guys from out west."

Frank studies the car through a worn pair of binoculars. "Looks like 'butter' or something to me, Bill. Button? Bu... hell, it wouldn't be Butane would it?"

Bill grabs his rifle. "One sunrise? I doubt it. Let me see."

Frank hands over the binoculars. Bill takes a look, refocusing slightly, while Frank holds his rifle.

"What the hell kind of name is that?" wheezes Bill, his tar-stained lungs approximating a laugh. "The Bytten Squad? Hell, that ain't even a word!"

"Who the heck are they?" asked Frank.

"We'll find out soon enough," replied Bill. "Sooner, if this idiot doesn't find the brake before he reaches the doors."
