Good gameplay footage

We're putting together a new promotional movie of DW and I'm seeking recommendations about good gameplay content I can grab from a playback.

Events that show off nice looking vehicles, good combats, excellent physics (*cough*) etc..

Event ID and (if possible) approx turn numbers where the good stuff happens, please

Bah! I had a good one where my Symph got launched, rolled, and continued on, but it seems it aged out of the system.

It was also nice because my characters had to bail and dash for the SS gates when the Symph was eventually totaled.

Event P81566 features Rhalp jumping over one car while firing at another, during frames 130-134. Not quite sure it'd make good gameplay footage material, but it was indeed a nifty stunt.

2 ped scouts

Widerness 81566 and 81444

might be useful because they show peds doing well and show the scenery well - the enemie AI behaves well too.

I am sure it will all be sped up real fast and cut very fast too - a'la action movies . The peds will look even nicer with bullets and dust getting kicked up around them the older ped models are stillnicer (imho)

PvP event with me and Sereph...

Not sure he would like this in the 'movie' but it was a fun one.
He wanted to see how deadly my 4gat Apache was with snipers in the gunner seats.

The event is a short one B).

Philyn and I were on our convoy to the new camp deep in the wastelands when we were jumped by 12 cars. We had a bus and 4 support cars.

you can use my camera positions for a starting place.
frame 3 - we come over the rise, but hold it there until they come after us.
Heck, just follow my cameras, it's a wild escape ride filled with cool Phoenix skins and a real Mad Max style "one turns to face them all" moment including a pedestrian fleeing and being shot down. They proceed to disassemble the Apache and its occupants.
The bus blows by doing 120 a couple times.
74 pan follow pickup
80 snap back pan follow apache
82-88 back to the death scene
90ish pull back to reveal Thelma and Louis finale

I'm planning on writing it up in the Gazette

awhile back, before we even had event playback, someone posted a playback video that had sound. i don't remember what software he used but it seems like it would be easier to do now.

though i am not sure that due the turn-based nature this is such a good idea. it is important to show we have physics, tho, as opposed to an "i have X movement points left" kinda of tabletop thing.

S107522

My first venture out with a Lorry (my first) and jumped by Butane. Am actually making headway running...but really like the map for killing bad guys...so...Apaches swing around (2 in escort) and open up.

Lorry goes a bit further...then swings back around...just in time to catch two bad guys (starting frame 48) trying to sneak up the hill and flank us.

KAPOW! 1st ram kills both occupants.

Lorry swings around while Apaches are laying down fire...and:

KAPOW! 2nd ram slaughters/catches fire flanker crew #2

Think Cinematically - Sam does not want 'in game context'
Sheer brain-less eye candy is what is required

Lots of 'Air'
Expolsions
Car showing good physics -no weirdness
pref. shot low and close for that GTA feel

Video is the intial 'hook'
We don't need to explain turn-based concept there.

Yeah, and as lame as mine sounds, it would make a great short movie. If handled cinema style, a couple fly-bys of the gangs initially, chase cameras as the fighting starts, a few key spots where you can keep the camera stationary and pan with the car as it goes by.

I think for this to work we need to submit replays where we'ev already done the initial camera positions. The trick to that, I think, is that it only works if you start the replay, enable the playback cam, and don't touch the controls during playback or you mess up the shots.

For one good 2 minute "short" of an encounter I imagine three recordings. 1 from the player's cameras, one shots as just flying round the fight, then a third focusing on a couple specific scenes. Time-code it in layers in Final Cut and you can just reveal one of the three cameras at key times and viola, a kickin vid.

What I've never figured out is how to screen-cap from the client.

Do you mean:

Or something else?

They are old (relatively speaking), and they don't have sound (you might be dubbing your own sound in though), but...

Hot Rod Abuse is short and shows a flying Hot Rod.

All Hallow's Eve Firetrucks has ... firetrucks ... and lots of mayhem.

Fighting Uphill is a good 2v5 encounter.

EDIT: And the various Rockets Are BAD! videos, because Rocket Chompers are fun to watch.

Markkos, what did you use to capture video of the game client?

I understand screen shots, but I wonder about getting the full video to an editable form.
Marrkos

Posted May 10, 2009, 3:18 am
Well, I use the screenshot series and the application discussed here and here.

But I know that some other folks have done movies using FRAPS (Win) and ScreenSnapz Pro (Mac).

I specifically didn't want to capture as video because of the editing that would be needed.

Each method has its pros/cons...

Screenshots: Pros: very little (to no) editing work needed, shows the turn-based nature very well (IMO).  Cons: no sound, camera work can be jerky.

Video Capture: Pros: captures everything (sound is nice).  Cons: heavy editing time required (usually)

Here's the new movie (we actually made it for a competition that's we're entering...) - it's heavily based on the earlier one made in late 2006, of course, but with the more recent GUIs, wilderness, insects, peds etc. stuff added in.

Darkwind: Youtube trailer May 2009

edit: please do keep the suggestions coming!, there's definitely more promotional movies worth making. I like the idea of making a movie that shows one specific combat in playback mode, with choreographed camera-work, as suggested.

Very cool.

It's fun to see how the interface changed over time (especially noticeable with the information bubbles).

I also got a kick out of the ped encounter where 1 guy sprints out of frame with a bug on his tail, and his partner is left alone to get swarmed.

How's it go? I don't have to be faster than the bear, I just have to be faster than you.

These few seconds of footage are just to damn cool not to consider.

Event 108313

Turns 18-20 - The best unplanned death from a crash I've seen in a very long time, even the death text is something I rarely see.

Turns 44-45. Not as cool as the first but still pretty cool to see that sometimes you just don't have enough time to escape from a burning car.

We had a scout with a really nice set of turns where one car gets hit so much it flips over the car next to it while both are moving. Earlier too someone used an ATG to knock a subcompact off a hilltop.

S108324 - Turn 39 to 44, give or take. The Evan Enforcer and Desert Siren left of the firing line.

Very cool!  :D

At the risk of seeing the glass half-empty, however, I think JD said 'salons' when he meant to say 'sedans', when talking about the chassis available (5:44ish).

A very minor glitch in a really excellent promo.

It's kinda fun to see how much the interface has changed over the ... years. (which is kinda scary to say out loud)

Well done, to all involved!

I think Saloons is probably the Euro equivalent to Sedans... or similar anyway. It's not a problem JD, it's barely noticeeable. We can change it if you'd prefer.

I do however reserve the right to bring it up to rib you mercilessly from time to time . :cyclops:

Nah... If you don't find fault with it and are happy with it, submit it.

Eaton with 7L.

It goes well for the first lap, barring me and Gear flying a little and taking some damage. I fall back into around 12th while Chain and the ohers move a head to first.

But then Chain KOs himself into a wall and then lands smack dab into the track... where -everyone- following almost or runs right into him. The survivors manage to limp across the finish line
