Darkwind
Engine v105, Media v84, Sarsfield, "low gears", fixes

*sam*

Posted Dec 1, 2008, 5:28 pm
* A few tweaks and fixes, including the code that calculates if you’re close enough to board or turn over a car.
* Also boosted the ‘low gears’ code for offroad vehicles and lorries, so that it becomes more feasible to climb steep hills (at low speeds). You’ll also notice faster acceleration off the start-line due to this. WARNING! – NPC offroad vehicles will now be more capable of climbing hills too, so don’t blindly follow your established tactics in this regard with the assumption that they can’t climb towards you.
* Changed damage severity messages so they’re based on the fraction of remaining health/armour that has been damaged, not the fraction of the original value. This will tend to mean more severe-sounding messages as your armour or health gets low.
* TAB is now an optional replacement for SPACE as the ‘submit move’ key (use Preferences to set it)
* Reskinned Looting GUI (thanks again to the fine work of desolatordan!)
* Added Sarsfield and its wilderness maps (many thanks to Dr Mathias for his great work on these)

Now, I would have thought since you built the maps, you would have had guys there already.

Surveyors....yeah.....surveyors, or terraformers. ;)
Dr Mathias

Yeah, Sam should have put some of my guys there... yeah...

Although half the fun is actually getting there. I'm anxious to try the maps "for real"... hope y'all aren't too mad at me after you encounter pirates on them, LOL...

EDIT: First attempt is on its way!

Looks like I won the race with darth in second. Awesome maps I especially liked the gates encounter!

Good looking stuff this patch!

As for Sarsfield, I'll have to settle for 30-ish place. All my spare crews are up north at the moment. Looks great though!

sounds cool, but i didn't quite think of lorries as "off road vehicles". could you actually tell us what vehicles have the, shall we say, "new transmissions"?

i for one wholeheartedly welcome the perceived idea that weapons are suddenly more bad-ass!

i'm sick of feeling "insignifigant"

all this stuff and Sam is like "oh, by the way, did i mention i added a whole town?"

Lorries aren't offroaders, but they do have super-low gears which help them on hills, as do the offroaders...

Buggy
Landrunner
Apache
Chomper
Dustup
Buzzer
2axle

Good stuff! had to send a 0+ newbie scout in a flash since i accidently sent my good scout to GW!

The opposition was no problem, if you start in an average spot, was sweating bullets for a while tho

Great maps, love the salt flat canyons, all of them!

Sam, should the Big Pick Up and Pick Up be amongst the offroaders? Only asking the question?
Mad Mike

Posted Dec 1, 2008, 8:28 pm
definately sam, the BPU and PU counts I'm sure.

I hope we dont have the same problem we had back when when pirates were scaling the cliff from the water on forever yellow skies and were able to climb up the cliff.....

I ran all my encounters the full 500m before escaping. Maps are very easy to drive and can actually use standard tires with no damage (of course thats staying on the path).

I actually was able to offroad quite successfully with standard tires and did not take any damage, I think these maps will be very popular for scouting, as the terrain is varied but forgiving enough to facilitate escapes. A few sneaky bumps and huge holes aside.

don't think the terrain is my style, i like to take cover and put ambushes.

The map that I've seen was quite flat.

But off course it might open up a new business route for me. anyone need cars or ganger's transported/escorted?

Sooo, here I am I get a guy all packed up and ready to go in Firelight to make the trip to Sarsfield.

To my surprise I can not go to Sarsfield from Firelight, but then again I trusted my senses and rechecked the geography of Evan and I was right.

Sam you'll need to correct the geography map of Evan as it clearly shows a road going from Firelight to Sarsfield. It also shows the Badlands TS road goes to Texan before you are allowed to go to Sarsfield.

Guess I'll have to wait a few days to head out to Sarsfield. :(

Awesome job. Ya caught me off guard though Sam. I sent two scouts up north to grab a few crews to bring back, expecting Sarsfield not to open til the end of the week.

Any chance we can get the Sarsfield Gangs to appear on the gang browse page?

What he said!
The map under (gameplay / map) shows no road between FL and Sarsfield.....

This map from the wiki shows travel routes, but there's no direct route from Firelight to Sarsfield.

Not really sure which map you're looking at; I don't see any other map that shows routes.

Wiki smiki,

Click Game Info, then Geography

Unless someone was playing connect the dots(towns), those are roads I see.

Did not cross my mind the wiki was more accurate than the main site.. :p

I stand corrected sir - that map does indeed show routes as you stated.

In defense, however, I must say that I've never seen that map before!

I think what most people were looking at was the map under Gameplay. I offered the wiki reference because that's the only one I knew of that showed routes.

So yes, that map should be updated.

I don't know whether or not this change was intended - also getting the new damage reports on concussion hits to crew.

We'll probably add a FK->SF route at some stage. In my defence, the map you're looking at under Game Info / Geography was made in about June 2005! One of the very first things I did, before even starting work on the coding.

Will we see lower top speeds in the vehicles with the lower gear ratios?
*jimmylogan*

Posted Dec 2, 2008, 3:20 pm
Just had a travel encounter on "Road to Gateway." You know that big hill in the curve? Two pirates started at the bottom - me at the curve. I popped up the slight grade and was gone - the Black Rock proceeded to take the hill *and climb it* in no time... Went from 16mph at the bottom to 20 by the time it crawled to the top... Very cool!

Yes, by about 15%

OK, so you reckon it fixes the problem as intended?

*jimmylogan*

Posted Dec 2, 2008, 3:37 pm
Yes, Sam, I do. By the time he got to the top I was almost 250m away, so he only accelerated ONCE over 20, then slowed to let me escape, so I don't know how his acceleration would have been after that.

But again, yes, the Landrunner was able to steadily climb while accelerating slightly as opposed to just stalling out.
