Darkwind
iPhone or iPod Touch

I don't NOT want to take away from development time with this question...

I find that there are times like now where I have access on my iPod touch, so I'm browsing the forums, but it's not logical for to have my computer out. If I could have access to the chat only then I could live chat in the lobby. Possible? Something you've thought about?

An interesting question. If the text is just transferred via socket, it'd be really easy to write. (I could write it.)

The trick is to get it on the iTunes app store...

I can think of a couple ways to do this without putting anything new up on the app store. And no, I don't mean 'hack your iPhone'.

Number one: set up a server that connects to the chat room at DW, and have it serve the chat room as a javascript page.

Number two: get one of the people who wrote a multi-protocol chat program for the iPhone to let someone contribute a 'secret hidden channel' that connects you to darkwind. Probably the easiest, since most of the interface work is done for you.

Number three: the corporate iPhone distribution plan. Up to 100 people who are part of the same 'organization' can use an iPhone app if you pay X amount for it. If I recall correctly, X amount isn't so high that ten people who wanted to do this couldn't each feasibly chip in enough money to do it. And I doubt we'd have 100 iPhone users in Darkwind for a good long time.

Also not to take away from development, but when whoever is redoing the website interface gets into it, can they do the whole thing for a Mobile client first...which I assume would work fine in regular browsers?

I'd love quick access to rapairs, sending out a scout, or just flipping thru character sheets.

Really, putting that kind of GUI constraint on it would just make the whole thing work better, I'd think.

Developing for mobile browsers would really mean a separate set of web pages for them... the Blackberry, for example, really can't sensibly display anything with any decent user interface. IE on the Windows Mobile really requires a whole separate round of testing. (Safari on the iPhone is actually pretty good; unlike the other two, it ran my company's whole AJAX web UI first time with only two minor issues.)

I suspect you'd do much better with this request if you suggested a few small parts of the web pages that you'd like to see working on the mobile client. If someone (Sam) was feeling generous, he could drop those on a simplified web page.

i also access the website a lot from my ipod touch and i'm sure plenty of players have iphones.

Without having to code an entire mobile version of the site i've noticed one issue with mobile browsing. the menues on the top bar remain even after selecting.

for instance if i click "places" and then on the drop down click "sumerset" it loads sumerset but the entire drop down under places stays on the screen in front of everything. the same with the other drop down menus.

I use the site on Windows mobile using Opera mobile (highly recommend as IE mobile blows) and aside from a couple glitches it mostly works fine.

I think that the pages within the "navigation frame" are very well displayed on the iphone. probably a simpler menu for moving trough pages will do

for example I hate that the back button on mobile safari throws you out of dark-wind website to the page you where before

some other thing that may require fixing is that the sites "stay logged in" feature doesn't work very well if you keep changing browser

still if sam is ok with the reverse engineering of the lobby protocol we may cook ourselves a chat client available trough a web page as a "web application" for the iphone, plus a thin navigation wrapper for replacing the troublesome javascript - but authentication will remain a problem, a security one for the most part - I myself wouldn't lend my credential to any third party website

I've some time on my hands and some tools that may be useful if you need

probably we may starting providing those features that requires a quick readonly peek now and then? like auctions, camp productions pages, marketplaces, that sort of stuff, repackaged in a convenient container.

Bump from the dead.

iphone 4 user here, and I was interested in the chat, and a easier/minimal interface for some other parts of the web pages.

I've noticed some websites (dseffect.com, for example) that create a link to a game through their website.  Going to a game from their list while on my phone, it says:
Quote:
To install  'Cross Roads'
Tap the + button and choose
Add to Home Screen
Launch it from there

I don't know if this is just a link to a webpage or what, but it seems to be the thing to do without trying to go through the app store, while having a DW Chat 'app'.

What do ya think?  What am I saving to my phone?

I have an old sprint samsung phone that I use to get dark wind. I have no trouble getting the gang pages to work. This way I can fix and buy stuff before getting my laptopt out later

I'm just starting to look into iPhone app dev.

Would there be any interest in an app that you'd have to pay for? Of course, I'd need to get my boss on side, Sam's permission, and line up all the ducks for getting it into the app store as well - so this may very well be pie in the sky stuff.

Nonetheless, any interest?

Just for chat? That'd be fine with me, it wouldn't take much for me to explain the data that's transferred. You could just ignore a lot of the command strings.

Any support for this idea? If nothing else it might be good advertising just coz so many people look through the app store.

It would be nice to be able to play encounters on it, not sure how easy it would be though.

There is a slight problem with the web interface on iphone (mine anyway!): On My squads / squad / vehicle advert overlaps with vehicle info so you cant load it / change vehicle set up. You can work round it by selecting the squad via the vehicles page however.

Nice one coco, that'd make it easy for mobile devices too. I think this is a better idea than a specific mobile app.
