The doors into Dexter's Tavern swing wide and stay open. Three tall shadows stand in the doorway and pause. The post-apocalyptic sun hangs in the dark sky behind them. The summer heatwave distorts the air, and Dexter raises his hand to shade his eyes from the glare.
"There are some low-down bastards operatin' in this part of Evan," grumbles their leader, shaking his head in disgust. The trio remains in the entry. Each wears a long dark duster and carries a sidearm. The two standing by the doors also hold guns with sawed-off grips. Every member of this intimidating trio sports a thick, dark beard that reaches down to his belt, and all three wear black sunglasses. The speaker wears a bolero hat with a sharp silhouette. The other two wear matching fedoras. "I'm looking for an ugly, orc-faced bastard who goes by Gomez Rodriguez. That poor excuse for a man just climbed out of his working mother's basement. I imagine he's looking for his worthless father." One of the gunmen mutters, "I doubt they've ever met." The lead ganger chuckles. "Rodriguez is driving for a team called the Bastards. They're well-known in this town for having an underhanded reputation. This bastard, Rodriguez, knocked my team's car out of a death rally today. Those inbred pirates kept shooting my driver and crew even after our car resigned from the race. The sadistic bastard must have put another forty rounds and cannon shells into my crew." The man pauses and shakes his head again. "Those murderers kept beating the remains of my gunner worse than Negan ever did." 'Bolero' raises his voice. "The leader of the Bastards goes by the name Pol Pot. He must have found a copy of The Art of War and used it for toilet paper. Those Bastards are driving for an outfit called the Redneck Confederation, and they use every cheap trick in the book." The leader reaches inside his duster and pulls out a thick roll of high-denomination local bills. "My name is Frank Beard, and my crew is called the Bootleggers. We're known in every town, and we are damned tired of these Bastards." Beard holds the roll of cash high. "We're offering a one-hundred-thousand-dollar bounty every time your gang takes the Bastards out. Knock them out of a death race or rally until they resign, and we pay that bounty. If your crew ends them in an arena or any League event, we pay up. Show us proof, and we'll show you the money!" "And..." Beard pauses. "We're buying a round for the house!" All three men hold up bottles of Bootlegger. |

The long-distance radio in Dexter's office crackles with noise and squelch.
"Good morning, Somerset, and fine folks of Evan," the deep voice opens. "Hello, this is Frank Beard of the Bootleggers. It is about 2130 hours. We just finished a great deathrally in Somerset—the starts to the Circuit of Evan. It was a very good event, not like that heinous excuse for a crime we saw last night." Static and a double-click on the mic. "Gomez Rodriguez and the Bastards didn't even run the event this morning." Beard breaks transmission for a second, then clicks back on. "The officials say that the Bastards registered for this deathrally only to pull out at the last minute. The Marshall stated that they retreated to watch from the safety of their warehouse." Beard chuckles over the air, "I guess the Bastard's 'pull-out game' is better than his daddy's." "Congratulations out to the Darkside crew and their driver, Chelsea Sims." Another low chuckle. "Looks aside, however... still congratulating Chelsea on her skill and sportsmanship." "We will be buying drinks down at Dexter's Tavern. Safe travels, Somerset. Beard out." |
