Darkwind
Singleplayer RPG title?

Supposing a singleplayer RPG version was being planned (still turn based, and framed in a narrative campaign), any ideas for the title?

Desert Blood is good.
Should it include "War on Wheels" in it?

Ah, finally something I'm good at...

Hell in the Holler: [or Hallow]

Road War:

The Wheels of War:

:Path of the Witness
[or Road, Highway, etc]

:Blood and Chrome

'Desert Blood' is cool too, Brun has a great thought.
:)
Looks to Sam, "Can you give us more details of the single player teaser?"

It's early days. But I've been thinking about why DW is still alive.. and it's because the core combat loop really is good. Turn-based physics-based car combat works. A singleplayer story-driven RPG version (with some sandbox elements) could do well. Less niche than an MMO. I'm considering the same funding source that got me some some $ to make The Necromancer's Tale.

I would agree that the core combat loop is good, I would suggest you could do far more with it were you minded to - something more detailed and nuanced would be marvellous.

BTW - Deset Blood is good - as long as you intend to stick with the usual post-apoc desert world setting :-) - and of course Dark Future is no doubt legally protected to the hilt by GW.

That game I reference earlier has both the storyline version and a sandbox, which is cool. FWIW I like "Roads of Evan"

I think you do the "War on wheels" (or change to Wheels of War for this)

But then you make the second title near your story.

Ie.

War on Wheels:
The Bloody Caravan.

If its a hit ..make more like that.

"But I've been thinking about why DW is still alive.. and it's because the core combat loop really is good."

Well, that and it's stupid fun to go out in the wasteland with friends and kill stuff.
The multiplayer aspect of DW is HUGE.

Except for the loners that treat it mostly as a single player grinding game, It attracts some odd folks

Not a great fan of desert blood, sounds a bit generic. Otherwise I agree with Joel, War on Wheels: "Story related term" or something similar should work.

Seconded--I think the PvE is the weakest aspect of DW, largely due to mediocre AI. I expect I'd want to love a singleplayer version, but without a competitive AI I doubt it'd hold my interest.

I think to me the DW's strengths are:
- PPvE: the combat is still held up by AI issues, but with the right group of people coop is a blast.
- PvP: PvP in a permadeath game is always nerveracking, but this is where the DW gameplay loop really shines.

In a single player version there can be no PVP.

As the title of this thread is about Single Player please don't derail it by diverting it to a discussion of the merits of PvP. We already have a game for that.

Some of us actually like the idea of having the option to go fight without being held up by other players schedules.

The AI is plenty good enough for the majority of fights. If the mech skill wasn't so effective in resurrecting dead components it would be necessary to be a bit more precise in fighting for salvage which in turn would make fights more challenging.

The AI would be rewritten for it; also, the key combats would be precisely set up as part of the narrative.

Then I'm excited!

And Wraith--sorry, didn't mean to derail the conversation; just trying to give my take on why people stick with DW.

Like Necromancer's Tale but Dark Wind?

It would depend on the narrative but...

-- The Last V-8
-- Butane (if it were about that famous clan that cooks and eats their enemy)
-- Breakfast with Butane (maybe a little Breakfast at Tiffanys twist?)

-- Dark Highways
(could to this as a franchise name then specific adventures like:
-- Dark Highways: The Badlands Conflict
-- Dark Highways: Escape from Firelight

Personally I don't care much for single player, in fact I dislike it, BUT I would most likely buy it anyway just to support your efforts.  I prefer the MMO side or even a shared dynamic world like in Elite Dangerous that you could PLAY solo inside but the effects of each player would impact the world as a whole...

Though I do thing "War on Wheels" franchise name is a good idea.

War on Wheels: Out of the Ruins
War on Wheels: Dark Highways
War on Wheels: Breakfast with Butane

You didn't happen to become inspired about set piece battles from my post on "Starting Backgrounds" by any chance, did you?  Because you could shoehorn that suggestion into DW after working the kinks out in your new project.

If you went with War on Wheels you might want to change the title of DW:WoW to War on Wheels: The Dark Wind, however I think the name is trademarked by an author named Tony Hillerman and is part of a Crime Novel series about Navajo Tribal Police and was the 5th in the series about the guy in it, and was made into a movie starring the Filippino-American actor Lou Diamond Phillips

Greetings, true believers! Been a while.

Dark-Wind:Blood-Desert <- It's a nod to Mythic Quest and it looks our little hyphen problem right in the eye.

One of the goals of the SPG is, perhaps, to continue to build this community. So leveraging what branding and name recognition we can to continue to build this community may be a part of the consideration.

I've never been a fan of the War On Wheels because of the confusion with WOW, and because DW isn't really War at all. It's guerilla skirmishes and raids.

So the obvious choice is Dark-Wind/[Symbol of Place] taken from the primary narrative used.  I have always liked how Elizabeth Boyer does this. Terry Brooks too.

That would make the URL DARK-WIND.COM/ChanglingofSomerset

Or something like that. As Sam realizes the whole world wants more of these, it's easy to just do single-player versions.

But that is somewhat dependent on the Narrative having a traditional single player as hero structure.

One of the MANY things I love in DW (which I call DW, incidentally) is the team management part. So could this single player game be similar to the current game where you manage a group thru a narrative and the characters are somewhat of your own making?

Dark-Wind/GunsGearsGuts2Go is my submission.

Oh yes. Team-based play is a core part of anything DW related I think. It was originally a way to enable perma-death in an MMO style game.

I have seen arguments against games being called "The Something: Something Else" as the subtitle can give the impression that it's an expansion or something else that requires an earlier game to have been played first.

That was actually the joke, originally (World of Warcraft was of course massive at the time that DW was first being built).

You mean how "Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter Nights" makes people think they need to play all 5 previous version of the entire D&D system with dice and strangers before they can install it and have fun?

Nope, I don't buy that argument. You have an educated base of passionate advocates. The only option is brand extension. The question is how and why and where to extend it.

PICK YOUR CONSTANT:
A. Dark
B. Wind
C. – (cause in D&D it's totally the &)

:p

Wheels on the Bus Go Blam Blam Blam

is kinda my favorite. Particularly if it speaks to the narrative of the story.
