"She has been up there all day, something is wrong." says one to the other "I have known since she made us stop here and set up a temporary scout camp then she climbed that tall dune without even helping. That's not her way."
On top sat the greatest of scouts Yolanda 'Wolfpelt' Carpenter. She could taste the wind and smell change long before it came. She studied the moving sky high overhead, beads of sweet trickled down her face. A sinking feeling was upon her. Gazing down the hill at the small scout party her heart ached, with resolve she focused once again. The sands of Evan, they were shifting. I feel I must address a couple of points and not to discourage the effort only to caution as a haruspex would share their divination. 1st Change is a good thing, it breaks old molds and new ideas are able to grow. I support change, we will roll with the punches. 2nd There is an element to DW that is unique, spellbinding, heartbreaking and woven into its inner fabric. It is what keeps players returning and pushing harder than before after catastrophic ruin. It is the almighty 'Permadeath'. I have great fear that paid mercenaries would take the risk away from losing gangers in battle. Using hired hands eliminates this element. Great caution is needed in this subject. 3rd A balanced CR is very good focus, this is the handle to your hammer. 4th Limited ganger skills? Maybe this should be giving more consideration. It is as important as CR when deciding the outcome of battle. 5th Controlling the new hex map areas with the introduction of 'Temporary Scout Camps'. A simple tarp between cars and a posted sentry, ringed with the loot of a recent battle. Camps are walled forts, established and set within the map. Temp Scout Camps are mobile and ever changing. Such a thing could be a Squad that has vehicles hidden to other players. The CR and ganger skills considered. Opposing players squads when entering the occupied hex can challenge this Scout Camp. Food for thought. DarkWind is the greatest of games. Player input and change is what has evolved it to where it is. The Sands are Shifting and there is a lot to consider. |
