Congrats. How is it going with the steam launcher? / install?

Thanks! :-)

The steam launcher/install is all figured out yeah. Their install/patch system is pretty slick.

Playing thru Steam is totally optional, of course - you can still play as normal with the version you download from the DW website itself.

Congratulations Sam, its been a long time coming, but definitely worth the wait. As always, you have my support and I am sure the rest of the player base during the Grand Opening to help with new players. We all hope this is a huge success because you deserve it for all the time and hard work you have put into it.

Yeah- I will definately look out for new players and help anyone to get started. Just getting together a few decent cars to give away, and set up a squad to scout with new players who are in in the (UK) daytime when there's not many players in.

Awesome. I'll probably download the steam version so it is displayed in my list of games and in the steam statistics showing how many people play it.

Will subs and CHR be purchasable via Steam Wallet or will it still be from the website?

Will there be Steam Achievements?

Steam collector cards?

I know those 2 things are important to some steamys and drive sales. I've bought a cheap game before knowing I can make back what I spent selling the collector cards. And I've played F2P games solely for that reason but most of those done seem to offer the cards

Might be worth organising a few community events on release, help the newbies settle in.

Lovely Jubblies! All the best for the release!

Great promo vid on the steam site, captures the game well.

Yeah, some of them refer to themselves as "achievement chasers" and buy even the worst games just to get achievements. And they admit it freely. Personally I'll play a bad game if I can make a profit from it. I got one not long ago for 98 cents and made $1.25 off the collector cards. Although playing the game for 3 and a half hours to profit 27 cents is pretty stupid.

Basically the 2 versions will co-exist: if you're running the Steam version then purchases are all via steam wallet whereas if you're running the version from the DW website they're all via PayPal.

I definitely want to do achievements and collector cards, yes. But not an immediate priority - I don't particularly want to drum up more traffic than the regular Steam publicity will produce,  at least until I know that the servers won't struggle

One thing I have come to realise is that gamers are a very varied lot, and enjoy quite different things. I'm not a collector/achiever type myself but its quite a common approach

My nuns collect serious injuries.
They are total achievement whores in that regard.

I have 2 races ready to roll... Just a bit short of organisation time (for some reason my wife thinks making nursery is more important than playing darkwind).

Funny that - I wonder why :-p

GEEk Events has Hammer Time lined up, we could schedule that to fit in with the Steam launch

It's the biggest (by far) "app store" for PC and Mac games. So it's a big opportunity to get discovered by lots of new players :-)

I think games such as XCom have helped "normalise" turn-based play so I'm hopeful that it will be broadly well received. I'm sure there will be plenty of negative comments too, but that comes with the territory.

Steam USED to be the WORST digital Download store on the web.  It was forced on me when I bought Civilization V and I hated it.  For some games it acted as a DRM copy protection thing and you could ONLY play the game if connected to the net.  But now that open Wi-Fi is so much more common that's not much of an issue anymore.

GameStop's "Impulse Driven" app Used to be the best app.  and cheapest.  then Steam got the brilliant idea to allow people to put in a code from a retail version (or Impulse version) and it would be available to play via Steam

With steam your computer could blow up and your dog could eat your game disk (or cat could pee on it) and it could be trash, and you wouldn't lose it!  Just re-install from Steam!  (yes these 2 things happened to me, Cats peed on Sims 2 and my puppy ate Space Empires V).

Then Impulse Driven / GameStop started losing their edge as "cheaper" when Steam started summer sales, weekly deals, flash sales, daily deals, achievements, sell-able collector cards...  And now GameStop no longer sells digital DL through its app.  In fact they also erased all my DL codes for all the games I bought from them and wont return my angry emails!  lol

One problem with Steam is the Greenlight Early Access games are often scams.

---People make a demo and get it greenlit, then sell it early access and take the money and run.  do a google for Earth: 2066 or Air Control for some examples.

Steam HAS come a long way, agreed.
But I know a lot of folks who still thinks it's the devil in bit form, just because of past experiences.

So far the Steam forums are leaning towards "skeptical" but I'm sure the negative flames will come. DW is not your typical twitch shooter action game that many people on steam seem to expect. I tried to leave some positive comments without looking like a Dev Alt. Some changes / improvements in areas we have mentioned in the past (like more dynamic behind the scenes politics, economy, faction things... Stuff that required more players that we have talked about from time to time) would undermine a lot of negativity

one thing to look at would be the town events don't het pop up to [PLAY] anymore, and if there are a bunch of events running it may be hard for a noob to find the event.

I had noted that - thanks for the reminder.
