Bastille has reworked the Scattered Hills map, which many of you will remember - this is a nasty, mountainous map in the Badlands region with chasms spanned by bridges. In the time since it was last used, the bridges have been destroyed and circuitous alternative routes now twist around the landscape.
*Longo* Posted Sep 11, 2012, 5:14 pm |
I loved those bridges! I had a buzzer fall off the side once! It was horrible...but awesome too!
Juris Posted Sep 11, 2012, 6:04 pm |
Thanks Bas!
It can't be worse than the Swamp of Dagon |
||||
*Tinker* Posted Sep 11, 2012, 6:34 pm |
those bridges looked so cool... snif btw I made a replacement bridge for those a few months ago if your interested...
*sam* Posted Sep 11, 2012, 7:59 pm |
Bast's version is pretty nice, as you'll see.. there's a couple of jumpable gaps.. if you're brave enough..
*Longo* Posted Sep 11, 2012, 8:24 pm |
Back in the days when the people in BL could be counted on 1 hand, I jumped a phoenix into those chasms more than once to try and escape a pirate onslaught. Seemed about a 50/50 shot for making it back then hehe |
||||
*jimmylogan* Posted Sep 11, 2012, 8:41 pm |
Oh now I GOT to try it... |
||||
Tez Posted Sep 12, 2012, 8:07 pm |
Just been on it, "jumpable gaps" is an overstatement, there's one that's very tempting & looks easy enough in fast car, & the rest I've seen are twisted bridges that not even a Tuttle would attempt.
*Bastille* Posted Sep 13, 2012, 9:35 am |
ahh, an alpha can do it, so can a tuttle.
Juris Posted Sep 14, 2012, 5:07 am |
First Failure
S492885 Tire and armor damage on those bridges is a bit high Edit: If at first you don't succeed... light your engine on fire - did it S492893 lol |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 14, 2012, 7:30 am |
haha
oh my |

S494057
SH may be impassible for lorrys Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I can't imagine a Lorry could've survived this ambush Edit: Unavoidable tire damage is fairly high. I seem to be getting this map A LOT too |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 17, 2012, 11:31 pm |
ahh, the good old days
just before I start getting a hail of rocks and shoes thrown, I made no changes to the rocks. Just the paths that go over them Thats a pretty nasty spawn spot alright. If you had 2400CR of goods, you'd be holding up their and hoping for some kinda divine intervention. |
||||
Juris Posted Sep 19, 2012, 6:19 pm |
SH is a bit grindy
S494554 I would pay a fortune just to fix one of those damn bridges - having to navigate 2-3 canyons for each travel is not too fun Also unless I have somehow offended the gods of probability I get this map almost every time - where the heck did the other GW->BL travel maps go? |
||||
*goat starer* Posted Sep 19, 2012, 6:47 pm |
i had two buzzers go into a mad dance and fly off them at 300mph that was fun but i REALLY wish you would put it back in ... WITH THE BRIDGES and only ever have ambush spawns on it.. they were the best ambush spawns in the game and the game is much the poorer for losing them it should never have been removed.. it was buggy and the Ai struggled with it but it was also fun.. and the game is supposed to be fun |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 20, 2012, 3:36 am |
you don't lika the short (long) cuts?
New ambushes should be fun here too on these bits, Im hoping. Juris' replay seems to be set up pretty nice, and this should make for some wicked mayhem.
Thats a thought, and would be... somewhat possible? |

*StCrispin* ce.services.mh@gmail.com Posted Sep 20, 2012, 5:55 am |
this is an excellent map for my favorite type of escapes! the low speed 35 Mph kind where you can laugh at the AI for being unable to drive like a human.
First few times I tried to stay on the road. that was rough on my tires! so next I tried jumping but my eaton bunnyhopped on hitting the ramp, then landed on the lip of the ramp, skiffed it, did an airborne barrel roll, landed roof first in the superstructure and fell to the bottom of the canyon with very little damage. so I drove through the canyon and the AI just stopped and watched in awe of my greatness Then I realized they dont like driving in the canyon, and the canyon does less damage to your tires than the road! sweet. |
||||
*sam* Posted Sep 20, 2012, 10:11 am |
Give the AI a few weeks, Crispin.. they need a bit of time to build up their knowledge of the map; after that, hopefully their pathfinding will improve.
*goat starer* Posted Sep 20, 2012, 3:46 pm |
BRING BACK THE BRIDGES!
Juris Posted Sep 20, 2012, 4:02 pm |
Thx I'll try that - the canyon looked impassible |
||||
Vroomhoff Posted Sep 20, 2012, 4:40 pm |
Seriously? Your AI learns the maps?? Or are you just pulling our legs? |
||||
Juris Posted Sep 20, 2012, 4:44 pm |
Nope, it learns
Why, does it make you uncomfortable that an AI is getting better and better at trying to kill you? ::Check out Sam's bio:: |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 21, 2012, 12:44 am |
This is the beauty of the AI in DW and why I find playing against the NPCs in this game much more than playing whack a mole. Some of the more remote areas will of course take longer for it to learn than the more common routes, but even basic terrain pathing is quite clever in this game, such as breaking los. It is also quite smart in the way it can place itself to avoid/draw/take gun fire. Some of those tricks mean they ram each other, but doing all the above is quite a complex ask of a bot. They need to take into account speed, risk assessment over terrain, angles, los, hiding, working in groups (watch the way they use each other as shields, quite clever).

Crowd-sourced pathfinding paper ;-) |

*DoubleTap* Posted Sep 21, 2012, 1:32 pm |
Best game EVER. | ||||
*StCrispin* ce.services.mh@gmail.com Posted Sep 22, 2012, 12:43 am |
Drive slow, in a good climber like an eaton. My landy had a little more trouble as the AI shot my roof while I climbed and then tried to follow (but in poor climbers, so I got distance fast) Not saying they dont try to follow, but they dont seem too good at it. Im sure by the time I resub they will be ready to eat my lunch. |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 22, 2012, 2:53 am |
It won't be too good in a large group though. Its now bloody brutal for anyone caught in one of those crossings.
I'd like to see how that pans out before making any further comment. |
||||
*goat starer* Posted Sep 22, 2012, 10:24 am |
Bring back the bridges!
One day... Without any discussion that I noticed... The best map in the game got removed and now we get a poorer version back. |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 22, 2012, 10:48 am |
don't you have anything better to do
*goat starer* Posted Sep 22, 2012, 7:34 pm |
nope... i appreciate the map getting back into the game.. and the effort to make that happen (as you know) but i dont appreciate the fact that my favorite map (because ambushes were genuinely dangerous) was removed without so much as a by your leave. put it back or i will go all shark on everyone!!! honest! |
||||
*StCrispin* ce.services.mh@gmail.com Posted Sep 22, 2012, 9:59 pm |
Et Tu, Goate' ? To quote a certain Roman... |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 23, 2012, 12:24 am |
Just wait till you get some of the new ambushes (not just here but elsewhere). I spend quite a bit of time trying to think up nasty places for them to be. The one here in question was my main inspiration. |
||||
*goat starer* Posted Sep 23, 2012, 7:12 pm |
i don't want new ambushes.. i want the old ones that were perfectly serviceable
say NO to progress! long live luddism |
||||
Lord Foul Posted Sep 23, 2012, 9:11 pm |
Hey Bast, have you tried or considered trying the wooden bridge used on the canyon joust track in place of the old ones in scattered hills?
How about the bridge used for the southern plateau map? In my opinion, the more narrow the bridge, the harder it is for the NPCs to navigate due to the limited pathing. If the wider bridges wre used, it appears to give th NPCs more options and they manage them a little better. |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 24, 2012, 1:15 am |
From what Ive heard down the grape vine,... they are actually one and the same
|
||||
*sam* Posted Sep 24, 2012, 10:11 am |
LF- the problem is that pathing is done very differently in the wilderness and on the racetrack. In the wilderness there is a 'cliff avoidance' test which unfortunately screws with their ability to cross bridges - they're too scared, basically, since the terrain under the bridge drops off. On some maps (e.g. Southern Plateau) I have disabled this test since the map is mostly flat; however on Scattered Hills disabling the cliff avoidance would cause a lot more trouble for them.
Serephe Posted Sep 24, 2012, 11:38 am |
It causes issues on Southernn Plataeu anyway, since there's a sharp curve before the bridge. Even if the road didn't have the curve, a player could simulate one by following the cliff edge before the bridge.

FYI I was able to maneuver a lorry here, but setup was good to start. Trucker skill was around 120+. |
||||
*Bastille* Posted Sep 26, 2012, 2:26 am |
Good feedback. Im glad you posted that Longo.
Im hoping it won't get too difficult here for some. Im kinda dreading coming through the region with several trucks and support. Especially if its an ambush. |
||||
Serephe Posted Sep 26, 2012, 7:59 am |
I'd give it a go, even with my current gang! Just need someone to hook me up with a lorry and some v8's for my escorts.

I got em, you just have to lay your money down |
