JD Basher and I are compiling/editing 'Tales from the Wasteland: a collection of stories from Darkwind' - we're going to make this available as a proper book as well as a pdf.
If there's any stories that you think were particularly good, please let one of us know! There should be room for all sorts of stories: dark, humorous, racing, etc.. thanks.. |

Love the blue text - not the pornography in the trunk! I guess that's why delivering 'mail' makes you thousands
Lol |

You have to....*have to* include 'The Immortal Mr. Kinlaw' by manglemybadger ....
*sam* Posted Dec 1, 2011, 10:46 am |
Thanks Para.. it's already tagged
-- we're looking at a mixture of 'dark/gritty' and 'humorous' |
||||
Serephe Posted Dec 1, 2011, 12:43 pm |
Why can't something be both?
*sam* Posted Dec 1, 2011, 12:50 pm |
it can, Sere! I recall some good stuff from Dr Mathias that would fit the bill.. if I can find it..
*Tinker* Posted Dec 1, 2011, 2:04 pm |
And Jety's Bowling for Jesus and An ominous rumble rumble rUuumble
hmm can't find the midget stripper antics |

Please keep the suggestions coming!...... I'll be working on more of this project this weekend during the evenings. (Be aware that I will be focusing on the 'longer' stories early on, mostly because they take a lot of time to edit and I want to get them out of the way. After that, I can focus on jumping between pages for the short ones.)
@Sam, expect one or more sizable emails from me late Sunday or Monday.... |

Lord Foul Posted Dec 2, 2011, 6:24 am |
Since it's the holiday season it would be good to see the DW Santa story in the upcoming Gazette and have this added to your book if it's not already tagged.
*Bastille* Posted Dec 3, 2011, 12:59 am |
Looking forward to this
Fifth Posted Dec 3, 2011, 5:27 pm |
If I may, I humbly suggest my stories "Sales Pitch" and "Live Fire" in Dexter's Tavern for submission.
*JD_Basher* jd.basher@charter.net Posted Dec 3, 2011, 11:31 pm |
Can you give me a url link for those stories so I don't have to search for them in the multitude of pages available?.... I will be going through the RP forums but any help narrowing my searches will help. ======= Just read "Live Fire"..... It's tagged to go in..... GREAT story by the way. |
||||
Fifth Posted Dec 4, 2011, 12:09 am |
Sorry about that. Sales Pitch is here. And Squeee! So glad you liked Live Fire! I've only been working on that one for... three months? On and off. |
||||
*JD_Basher* jd.basher@charter.net Posted Dec 5, 2011, 9:27 am |
DAMN Fifth! Dood.... You have a gift!
You will have two stories tagged in the upcoming book... I will need to edit them just a bit for sentence structure, but not much. I can tell when you get tired of writing.. |
||||
Fifth Posted Dec 5, 2011, 1:50 pm |
It's less a "gift" than a "need" - I write to keep from going (more) insane.
I do writing... elsewhere, and DW writing is Very Good Practice. So excited to read a book from of everybody's writing!
|
||||
*sam* Posted Dec 5, 2011, 2:31 pm |
I have only seen Live Fire so far.. great writing, Fifth!
d0dger Posted Dec 5, 2011, 9:33 pm |
If you include Sales Pitch and the format you're using supports illustrations it would be great to include a pic of Fifth's bullet skin.
*sam* Posted Dec 5, 2011, 9:48 pm |
Probably just greyscale images, apart from the cover maybe
*JD_Basher* jd.basher@charter.net Posted Dec 5, 2011, 11:40 pm |
Yeah, the cost of full color pics in a book is exhorbitant! Halftone images look just as good depending on the original quality without the color or cost. ============= "Sales Pitch" will be included in a later chapter. Looking for some 'colorful' stories of ganger life and wildlife... I remember a few stories about the slaver arena that I am searching for to include. |
||||
*JD_Basher* jd.basher@charter.net Posted Dec 5, 2011, 11:46 pm |
I have yet to see any stories from the 'scavenger' side.....
Would be nice to have a few of these included. I don't play scav, so I don't feel right writing stories about them.... Can someone step up? |
||||
Fifth Posted Dec 6, 2011, 5:30 am |
If you guys don't see a Scav story by the time the rest is ready to go, might I suggest putting 2 weeks or a months' subscription up as a prize? or a Scav item as a reward? I don't play Scav and therefore have no interest, but it seems like it might be a good way to get stories. |
||||
Groovelle Posted Dec 6, 2011, 6:09 am |
Cool stuff Sam. Might I suggest putting this in the Darkwind client's news as most people only check the forums they usually check. Might bring in some more attention that way.
Valiance Posted Dec 28, 2011, 10:10 am |
Most of the stories that I wrote are at:
http://vanguards.wordpress.com/ My favourite is: Show Her The Ropes: http://vanguards.wordpress.com/2008/08/18/show-her-the-ropes/ I also like (he says through gritted teeth) Death of a Mortar Lorry http://vanguards.wordpress.com/2008/09/30/death-of-a-mortar-lorry/ I like these two because they use fiction to explain some strange quirks of Darkwind: http://vanguards.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/stand-and-deliver/ http://vanguards.wordpress.com/2008/03/15/limpet-beacons/ Would be great to see some of those in a book - I've been meaning to ask Sam if I can turn mine into an ebook :-) |
||||
*sam* Posted Dec 28, 2011, 12:01 pm |
Cool, thanks Val. I was meaning to ask you about using some of yours..
*Ayjona* Posted Dec 31, 2011, 1:27 am |
While I ill like to toot me own horn, not one to put meself forward, etcetera (though really, I do, and I am), perhaps some of my old writings in the early issues of the Gazette might have a place in a tales anthology. They were far more literary than journalistic, that's for sure
While it is possible several of my articles from back then (such as the Road to Firelight), and certainly plenty of badger's, might be suitable, the one in particular I had in mind is a rather melancholic essay on the nature of someone who would choose the life of road warrior , found down the right side of the Sep/Oct 2042 issue of the Gazette. If need be, I can expand it and add some context to the narrative. |
||||
*JD_Basher* jd.basher@charter.net Posted Dec 31, 2011, 5:18 am |
I like this one Jonas......
Might be a bit too cerebral for most of the readers but not for me.... The story is added... JD =========== Valiance...... Your favorite is going in....... The others may have to wait a bit so I can get other stories in to break them up... Don't want to have 3 or 4 stories from the same author one after the other. JD |
||||
*Ayjona* Posted Dec 31, 2011, 2:02 pm |
Heh, "too cerebral". Good (and probably accurate) way to put it Well, as long as you are reading and enjoying my stuff, I could not be happier, universal dislike and subsequent excommunication from the Darkwind community though it might earn me When is the anthology due? I just realized I have a piece of (slightly more) traditional Darkwind fan fiction lying about, a concept and background narration piece based around Rhalp Mason and R.Inc., written in Swedish for the player (a friend of mine) of that gang. Translated into the Queen's english, it might be a good fit for yer book. |
||||
*JD_Basher* jd.basher@charter.net Posted Jan 3, 2012, 12:28 am |
I'll read anything you have Jonas....... Well, as long as it is in English..... hehehe

What happened to this project?
Is anyone still comiling? |
||||
*StCrispin* ce.services.mh@gmail.com Posted Nov 4, 2012, 1:08 am |
Would be nice to print and bind an anthology and sell it on eBay as a combination book and product advet. Maybe include a complimentary 1 month sub as part of the package. The work would need to be good enough to pass as professional and have character driven depth to it. But its a thought. Good for drawing in players and development money maybe.
Only reason this popped into my head is because part of my BA is in publishing and ive always considered starting my own publishing biz and its always on my mind how easy a startup would be or what could be done. Not considering the $10,000.00 bindry equipment it wouldnt take much effort. Lol. Surely someone kbows a binder who could do work like this cheap for the DW project and benefit both Sam and the game. |

*sam* Posted Nov 4, 2012, 1:04 pm |
There's various online places where you can get books bound these days.
We haven't done much compilation of material in the last few months, but there's a nice bunch collected already. There is also the 'Brooke's Tale' stories being written by Fifth - this is actually large enough and good enough quality to use as a stand-alone piece of work. Or maybe as the 'anchor piece' in a compilation. Have you seen the Gazette serialisation of it? I just checked and it hasn't been in the last few issues, but it started in the May/June 2062 issue and ran for about 2 game years I think. Fifth has just emailed me the second section (so it runs to about 60+ pages at this stage). |
||||
*JD_Basher* jd.basher@charter.net Posted Nov 20, 2012, 10:47 pm |
Fifth 's tale would be good to put in as a starter for the book...
Depending on the size of the finished product. Standard soft-cover size, 4X8... 5X10... The compilation put together as is ,WITH Fifths contribution "might" come to about 150/200 pages. MORE pages if you used larger type. St. Crispin.. Bindery equipment is spendy and NOTORIOUSLY fussy because of the different production sizes of jobs produced. Waste tends to be around 5/7% BEFORE any salable product is made. That waste is from Salable content of books produced unless scrap/over-print is used and cut to finished size to calibrate the equipment BTW. (I used to manage and run a printing company...... WAY back in the day.) The compilation I sent Sam was set at 5X8 I think and came to 140 pages WITHOUT Fifths long story. |

Sunnyoutside press may be a viable option for this sort of thing. They are an independent, small press publisher, specializing in poetry works (don't ask me how I know), and short fiction.
*JD_Basher* jd.basher@charter.net Posted Nov 20, 2012, 11:08 pm |
"Sunnyoutside"... LOL.. Like the premise of DW is!
*Rev. V* Posted Nov 20, 2012, 11:23 pm |
My favorite story is the one JD wrote.
It was called "Dude, where's my reloads?" |

LMAO! Gonna have to wait on that one bud!.... Gonna put that in the next vocals I record! Sam is the one to talk to IF you don't want to hear it! |

Valiance Posted Nov 26, 2012, 12:06 pm |
I run an entire business selling books in single print runs from Lulu.com. you pay per copy (there isn't much of a discount for bulk), people order direct from the site and they handle P&P.
I would highly recommend using a service like Lulu over a small publisher, especially when we are not sure about the market size. |
