Awesome!  The more custom paint we have running around Evan the better, as far as I'm concerned.  (In fact, I'm hoping a few people might take it upon themselves to donate a few skins to Sam for the NPCs.)

The windows on that subcompact are great -- they look stronger than the body armor.  :cyclops:

The rate's gonna change, you know, dependin' on stuff.  What's our paint guy's time away from his gunner duties?  Do we like ya or would we just as soon tattoo a bullseye on yer back while yer sleepin'?  That sorta thing.

The way I figure it is we'll do the job, and then you'll throw some money at us.  The rest is just details.  If you've got somethin' in mind and reeeeally want a quote, go ahead and send a personal message 'n we'll talk.

Replay ID to the first use of the Skin JeeTeeOh finished for me.

All the Screenshots I tried to upload came out too dark to see right for some reason. But great angle to give it a good look is at turn 49, where I finish the travel escape a couple turns after a lengthy powerslide for fun.

Thanks for skin man, looks great.

Sure, we could do some three-color oldschool conversion van.  We may even be able to reconfigure the cargo area with a waterbed-lava lamp combination.  Pink shag carpet.  Wet bar.  But why bother with comfort when you can opt for raw, flesh-peeling horsepower?

Like this little number.  "Shifty" Charlene Trueblood of our own Cowboys Unlimited said she was gonna shotgun our paint crew if they didn't put some purty on her new deathracer and, well, if you knew her like we do....

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/JohnnyDebauchery/BlazeofGloryDR.jpg

Yep.  Even Corghettes're no problem here at GTO's Paint N Body!!  So get yerself on in here and let's shine up that deathmachine!  Cuz if it's your time ta go, ya might as well do it in style....

Huh.  I wonder where the line's drawn when it comes to "new skin based on old skin."  I mean, should an attempt that doesn't even get the colors right keep someone else from doing it?

At GTO's Paint-N-Body, the customer is often right!  And yes, that includes day-glo colors, even though we try to talk some sense into 'em before we actually go forward with that sort of thing.

Longo and his Merry Men insisted on the green and they sure as heck got it.  Sort of a drag though... once people burn out their retinas lookin' at the paint they ain't able to appreciate the skull and crossbones grillework.  Or the custom bodywork on the windows and rear end.  Damn shame, that.

Saturation bombing?  Ya know I love it!!  So saturation advertising should work too!  That's right, it's another "Hey lookie there you really want to drop piles of cash on that" spot from GTO's Paint-N-Body.  You know, where we're not happy till yer a reeeeal good-lookin' target.

And speakin' of good-lookin', our own Charlene Trueblood (we call her "Shifty" round here) brought in her 5Lv8 Royal Eaton and said ta give it tha royal treatment.  "Make it somethin' the other guys'll enjoy lookin' at while it drives away from 'em," she said.  "And make damn sure they know whose car it is."  Done!

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/JohnnyDebauchery/CharlenesDream.jpg

Enjoy the ride, and watch the bumps in turn two Charlene!

Another recent job was for that venerable pack of miscreants known as Old School Perverts.  We talked about somethin' inna "overcoat and free candy" theme, but they decided to go another direction.  The finished product was just what they were looking for... menace, platform heels, and exactly zero color:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/JohnnyDebauchery/OSPBuc2.jpg

As for the oldschool Spandau twin machinegun graphics on the hood, well, yer just gonna hafta wait till he's shootin' atcha to check those out.

Spend money! Look good! Add exactly NOTHING to your car's combat ability while still puttin' a serious dent in your bank account! Come to GTO's Paint-N-Body and get yer PURTY on!!

If ya ask me, this is a car ta do some racin' an killin' in. I was gonna start makin' these and chargin' an arm anna leg for 'em, but then I remembered what a hassle it was to build. Oh, and half you guys're missin' limbs anyway so ya couldn't meet my price.

OOC:

Lately I've been spending more time skinning than duelling, and suddenly DW has turned into a -- gasp! -- job. Turns out I'm not as interested in making DW bucks and "getting ahead in the world" as I am in having fun. Hooray for me!

I'll still turn out the occasional one-off skin for sale or auction, and I may try Rev V's business model of producing a skin to be painted on cars as requested. But custom, made-to-order skin files are out, at least for the time being.

Apologies to those who had jobs pending. But I want to get back to, as Pancho said, "shootin' stuff." Wish I'da banked a couple mil before I went this route! =)

Someone mentioned a desire for more gritty, world-appropriate skins, and I got to thinkin' that I might be able to contribute something to this game I dig so much. Grittycool, world-appropriate NPC skins!

I'd like you to leave it out in the radiation for a while until it rusts over nice and good. Then you can take it into yer shop and give it a few whacks with a big hammer. Top it all off with a purdy-like spray painted design on the hood curtesy of your least talented artist.

So we've got this squad. Hellfire Brimstone Club, it's called, and it rolls out whenever we start craving utter, lethal mayhem.

The rules of the HBC are simple. Fire up yer muscle car and leave the scouts at home, then charge headlong into the enemy and fight until the fight is over. No retreat, no surrender, no lettin' the badguys escape so's some bleeder can live to fight another day. It's a good ol' fashioned brawl, and people get hurt on both sides.

Survivin' a HBC run is somethin' in itself. But standin' out from the crowd while ya do it? That's somethin' special. So we're introducing the 'DEATHPROOF' line of muscle cars to commemorate acts of exceptional bravery, insanity, or altitude performed in pursuit of the HBC's goals.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/JohnnyDebauchery/deathproofbuc.jpg

The sunrise, buccaneer and moray are all in line to become 'DEATHPROOF' models. Other chassis may or may not follow. Awards are made at the sole discretion of Cowboys Unlimited (who may or may not put it to a vote) and will never be made posthumously (as dead gangers are by definition not deathproof).

So a few weeks ago I was jawin with JTO and he showed me a screen of his Moray skin. After seeing it and wanting one of my own, I came up with an idea that I believe was a first.

I requested JTO create a Moray skin using all of Evans sponsors and jazz it up a bit for the Hellrazors.

Here are some screens of the completed skin done by the one and only JTO.

As you can tell my favorite sponsor is Old ma's pies

It may be hard to read in this pic, but the front says "I'd kill for an Old Ma's Pie"

Feelin' like a warrior but stuck in a subcompact? Now you can intimidate the competition and still keep that amazing cornering ability... it's the Gladiator Series Sonic from GTO's Paint-n-Body!

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/JohnnyDebauchery/sonicusrex.jpg

Shown here is the Cowboys Unlimited deathracer, "Sonicus Rex."  Standard G-Series features include dual hood scoops, reinforced steel grillework, vertical front viewports and the elimination of those pesky rear windows. Black hood/side stripe is also standard.  All other paint is fully customizable.

So get in touch with us and we'll make your Sonic look as mean and ugly as the guy drivin' it!

Prices may vary. No additional vehicle durability expressed or implied. GTO's reserves the right to refuse service to mutants, zombies, slavers, ugly chicks, town militias, renegades, llamas and short people.

At GTO's, we are NOT above shameless self-promotion! Heck, we figger if we know tha word we might as well do whatever it talks about. (We also know words like "crash" and "explode" but that's a different conversation.) So in tha interest of keepin' y'all interested in our little paintshop over here we figgered we'd better show ya what we been up to lately.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/JohnnyDebauchery/jeeteeohsOCThd.jpg

Some o' these are custom jobs fer gangs around Evan, some're for use by Cowboys Unltd, and some're even for those outlaw-types livin' tha dream in tha wastelands. Heck, their money spends as good as anyone else's, ya know?

So yeah! You got a project in mind? Get on over ta GTO's. We'll do it on our own schedule, but you can bet yer last bullet you'll be happy when it's done! Cuz at GTO's, we ain't happy till you're a damn good-lookin' target.

Okay gentlemen, here's your chance at custom-shop intimidation on a budget! It's the new "Warlord" paint scheme for your big pickup... and at only $75k per vehicle, heck, why not get TWO? Featuring that rarest of rare color choices -- basic black -- it's got some more routine stuff too: a big ol' cobra, red pinstriping and tinted headlights, and of course the "Warlord" emblem across the tailgate so they know what hit 'em as you drive away with their gear....

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/JohnnyDebauchery/warlord.jpg

Yep, it's big, heavy and mean -- just like a truck should be -- and since it's a BPU you can load it with all the guns ya need to back it up. The way we figger it, if ya don't scare tha jerks ta death you can always shoot 'em!

Place your orders in the PM mailbox... odds are you'll be drivin' a Warlord off into the wastes before the sun sets on your day!

"What?" Spud Wheeler's voice was icy. Like death.

"They were in the paint shop. Delivery was supposed to... I mean, it came time to... They're gone! But it wasn't my fault! I never left my---"

Spud's .45 made a boom, not a pop, as .45s tend to do. The new recruit slumped against the wall, rapidly bleeding out, his final thoughts drifting over his first and only assignment as a member of Loose Cannons. Pre-auction guard duty.

Or it won't.

Nothing's guaranteed around here except your satisfaction with any skin that is produced.

Man, you don't wanna work at this shop. It gets blown up, people get shot, Bastille is always sittin' on the couch eatin' chips and gettin' crumbs all over... it's an ugly scene.

What you wanna do is paint a few skins of your own, then start up your OWN shop. Mebbe advertise like I did -- check the first post of this thread -- get a couple of satisfied customers to post shots of their new rides, and you'll be well on your way to never playing DW cuz you're always painting cars, just like me!

Dammit.

Well, I needed to ask you first out of respect and not try to muscle in on anyone's action. But as long as its ok with you that I can freelance some jobs on the side, I can live with that. I do appreciate all the help you've given me as well.

Just remember when a competitor's paint shop opens up, it could lighten the load to give you a little extra spare time to start spraying cars with bullets instead of paint!

Who am I, Al Capone? hahaha

I'm not the only guy around here that paints. I'm just more prolific at the moment. But when I was starting, I didn't need anyone's permission to "go into business" and neither do you (or anyone else who might be reading this thread, for that matter).

Hell, it's a good way to make some money without grinding.

But as far as I'm concerned, every artist is going to have his own style, and the more user-created art we have flying around Evan the better. It can only add to the flavor of the game, and that's a WIN.

So get to work, amigo. Who knows, mebbe I'll commission a skin from you sometime.

Groove Champion

Posted Sep 14, 2012, 8:44 pm
The rims are a seperate file from the vehicle skin, so you can't. There are 3 types of rims used in Dark Wind, and they are chassis-dependent.

If you modify the wheel file, it will be applied to every vehicle that shares that type of wheel.

I doubt I used the word "difficult." More probably I said "a total mess" or "impossible." The entire car is in that colored square in the center. Things are stretched and morphed to fit the model, and whatever you do will be a tie-dyed hippy disaster. Not much else I can tell you other than to contact the guy who commissioned a Stormer skin and tell him the price just jumped to $2.5million. In advance.

There may be a thread dedicated to this stuff in the DW Discussion thread. You can look there if you like. But I don't touch the Stormer.

I usually post them on MS or FB (use whatever online pic hosting you have) and link from there.

The rolling door to "The House o' Purty," GTO's paint shed, clatters open. Mary 'Aint Broke' Colter strides into the sunlight as a V8 roars to life behind her.

"It's the best lookin' truck in Evan." she says to the gathered LCs matter-of-factly. "And it's a damn good thing I'm here to make us some money, cuz you jerks sure aint pullin' your weight in the wastelands."

She looks back to the shed. "Bring 'er out!!"

"Really?" Spud Wheeler, leader of the LCs, looked skeptical. "Are you sure this is what they wanted?"

"Yep. They said a bullseye, so I gave it to 'em. Of course, I put a couple o' personal touches in there too." Mary Colter, lead mechanic and paint/body expert, always took great pride in her work, even though she knew its life expectancy could be very short. "That camoflage is perfectly in tune with the sands of the northern deserts."

"The better to see the bullseye," chuckled Wheeler.

"Heh, never thought of it that way. And climb up on the scaffold there and take a look at the roof. You're gonna love this."

Spud did as she suggested, looked down at the top of the ambulance, and almost fell from the scaffold laughing. As he climbed back down he shook his head, grinning widely.

"You gonna tell 'em about it?"

Jee, do you actually freehand a lot of this, or do you just work with textures? Or is it some of both? What do you use for the freehand stuff? Gimp or some other high speed software?

I use gimp for everything, and I assure you none of this happens at high speed.

Sometimes patterns, sometimes freehand. Sometimes sort of a gray area that's both or neither. On that symph, the window grate is a texture. The graphics are "found and modified" to meet my needs. The base paint, sealed rear window, shading, and pipes/exhaust are freehand, and the extra hole in the front end is the original hole inverted. The colors are individually adjusted for hue/sat/contrast manually.

So I dunno... you tell me.  ;)

That car's about four hours start to finish, if you include the original car "cleanup" (which I'll use for multiple skins) and errors/throwaways.

On the camo symph, the camouflage is 100% custom and freehand. I'm kinda proud of that because usually my freehand camo looks like crap and I go with a pattern instead.

Good stuff, thanks for the answer, it's my freehand and shading that sucks the worst, I can slap textures on pretty well, but the little customization details often elude me.

One of the best things I've found to help with shading is the "feather" option on selections. It assigns a certain pixel-width of fade effect at the edge of the selection. I combine that with the gradient tool (black to transparent, low opacity) to do most of my shading effects. For a visible example, check the shading on the Symph's windows.

Trial and error, amigo. Trial and error.  ;)
*Rev. V*

Posted Nov 15, 2012, 4:40 pm
I do all my shading with the airbrush tool.

I mask off areas with the lasso, use various brush sizes.
I set the airbrush way down at 4%, any higher just seems to throw too much paint for a good fade.
Go over again as needed for the desired effect.
Takes a bit, but it works for me.
*Bastille*

Posted Nov 15, 2012, 11:21 pm
Thats how I do most of mine too V

The lighting tool can be bloody handy too, or even special effects on layers, then you can move stuff around and still have the effects of chrome, shadow, glowing lights etc. (Its a bit of a cheap cheat, depends on whos skin you're working on :p)

GTO's Paint N Body Reserves the Right to Refuse Service to Anyone.
This Means You Too.

And another:

Good Work Ain't Cheap.
Cheap Work Ain't Good.

"Hey there, hon," she says, grinning widely and giving a wink. Her teeth are the color of a rusted exhaust pipe. "You waitin' for that callback on your job so you can get your car into the bay?"

She looks over her shoulder, making sure everyone else is in back working.

"Look," she says quietly, "you've been in here b'fore an' you know these guys pretty much paint whatever they feel like. That's why they don't take no cash up front... they don't wanna have obligations.

"But here's the thing. They're real touchy back there. Someone gets all grumbly, they might not ever make the call. Some gang haggles a price too hard or lowballs a 'pay what it's worth' job, they never get a car in the shop again. Too picky? No call. Too smelly? No call. Now I ain't sayin' any of this stuff is what's goin' on with your paint. I'm just sayin' they're pretty much jerks back there and they do whatever the hell they want, when they want, or they don't, and---"

She stops abruptly and turns to face a tall lanky guy as he walks into the office. He looks like he's been huffing as much as he sprays. For a long time. He nods at you, then starts barking at her about a shortage of "roadkill red" paint. She gestures in your direction and raises her eyebrow. The man pauses.

"See, you're right here," she says, smiling and pointing to your gang's name on a piece of paper tacked to the wall. At least you think it's your gang's name. There are so many names scrawled and scribbled out and overwritten and underlined it's tough to read much of anything. "Don't worry hon, we'll give you a call! Thanks for stoppin' in and remember --"

She raises her voice as you head for the door in disgust.

"We're not happy till yer a damn good lookin' target!"

The Troll strides into the paint shop of GTO's Paint-N-Body, a broad grin on his face and two large bottles of whiskey in his hands. The cute young lady at the counter greets him and asks the nature of his visit.

"Simple." Troy places the bottles on the counter and continues. "Tell your boss that the Flying Circus is glad to see his work gracing the dunes of Evan once again. Nothing we appreciate more than the work of a master."

With that, Troy walks out, his business done.

OOC: Outstanding skins. I like the Stormer a lot, but that Ramones skin is brilliance.

We've all been there. Satan's Sisters are blasting every scrap of armor off your car, all hope is lost, the engine goes up in flames and the thought suddenly hits you: I'm gonna die in a car that looks like utter crap.

It doesn't have to be that way.

Here at GTO's Paint-n-Body we've earned a reputation for producing the finest custom death machines in all of Evan. Ask around. Look around. Our stuff is easy to spot. Unless you want camo, and then our stuff is nearly invisible. Either way you look like a winner! What's more, we use gen-u-ine lead-based paint so it won't fade over time, even under the hellfire irradiated skies of Evan.

And we don't charge an arm and a leg for all this goodness, either. Just lots of Chrome.

So get on down to GTO's Paint-n-Body. Mention the "Wanna Die Purty" special and receive an arbitrary and probably worthless bonus gift just for stoppin' in!

And remember: At GTO's we ain't happy till you're a damn good-lookin' target!

Crazy AL

Posted Sep 17, 2014, 3:35 am
A mustachio'd man with a black top hat and a long coat strides up to the lot of you while you're discussing the various merits of quality paint jobs and plants his sniper rifle cane down in front of his feet placing both hands on the top.

He looks at each one of you briefly and deliberately and then says, "Gentlemen, for a small fee I can guarantee a higher rate of return on the prices of your goods that will far outweigh the cost of my services." He gestures to the noticeboard with his cane as he continues, "Crazy AL's Auction House always get you top dollar over this sad excuse for an advertisement!"

With that, he tips his hat to you all and replaces the dark tinted goggles over his eyes that were sitting above the brim of his hat. He turns towards the nearest watering hole with a quick glance up at the sky and strides quickly away.

"What tha...? Who's that guy?" says the LCs newest driver, Gracie Leroux. "I didn't like his tone. Should I round up a thumpin' crew?"

"Naw," answers Mary Colter. She'd been around a while, long enough to be the oldest LC in Somerset. "That's just his way of lettin' us know he's back."

"From where?"

"Heck, I dunno. But the name's Crazy Al. He used to auction some of our stuff. Got decent money too, if I recall. Thought he was dead."

"Guess not."

Mary looked toward Al as he continued down the street. "Maybe, maybe not. I was over at another place today and he gave that same speech, word for word. Could be he's some kinda automaton. Cyborg or somethin', and the real Al's dead."

"You mean he's a ... robot?"

Mary laughed. "Damn you're gullible. No such thing. He's just gettin' old, probably forgot he already said that to everyone. Best to humor him I think."

The bell above the door chimes, and the showroom of GTO's Paint-N-Body goes quiet as a strange blond woman enters. The newest leader of The StormPetrel's, Concetta, strolls up to the counter. "I hear my boys had you do some work to their car" she says. Concetta give an aloof glance around the shop. "If you ask me, they are too cowardly to deserve a car that cost this much,  but that decision was made before I got here." Concetta give an icy look to the two gangers pretending to look at some chrome rims on display as the fail to hide their attempts to eavesdrop on this wild woman that so quickly rose to power. As she reaches the counter, she addresses the muscular attendant working the orders desk, "They have been sniveling about how the cars I provide them are making them the laughing stock of Summerset; and if they were to risk their lives, then they were going to want to Die Purdy."

A moment passes in silence, though it seems like an eternity, as the two stare at each other.

Suddenly, faster than a rad scorpions tail, Concetta grabs the startled ganger buy this paint stained coveralls and pulls him half way across the counter snarling "Let me see what MY money has bought!"

Releasing the now clearly distraught attendant, Concetta coolly turns her back on the man, and leans back on the counter, she stars out through the window towards the red wast that is home to all that live here. The ganger, having bolted through the door behind the counter, jumps into the freshly painted Phoenix and drives it around to the front of the shop. He stumbles in his hasty exit of the car, pulling a rag from his back pocket to wipe and prints he may have left on the door.

Concetta rights herself slowly and walks to the door, placing her hand on the handle she give a push feeling the warm dusty air hit her like a punch.  A single tear rolls down her left cheek as she reaches for the key in the attendant hand as he holds the door open.

"This..." she says almost inaudibly, "This is a car I could die in."

"Who the hell is that?" asks Mary Colter, looking on with interest from the couch. "And how'd he get behind my counter?"

Gil 'Army of One' Farrow is laughing. Quietly, so as not to disturb the scene playing out across the room. "I dunno. She really think he's one of ours?" He draws his nickel-plate .45, considers for a moment, then holsters it again.

"Guess everybody gets lucky sometimes."

"Yep."

"Think he's a customer? Mebbe we should help him out," says Mary as the distraught stranger moves to retrieve the Phoenix.

"Nah. Let 'em have their little moment."

The two LCs chuckle quietly and watch.

Daniel 'Gritty' Negrete quietly walks over the GTO's, slowly opens the front door and peaks inside. With just his head inside, he tilts it from side to side to see what the ruckus was.

"Hows it going Mary??" after he sees her behind the counter. "Looks like we got us some new riffraff running our town. If you need a hand in ....ummm... in taking care of things, you let me know. I have no problem dropping my paint guns for machine guns".

Daniel flips a beer can towards Mary. "It ain't much, but it's cold". After taking a few gulps of his own, he lets out muffled belch. ""Scuce me, but just so you know, the LC got me started with my Chop Shop, so anytime you need some backup, twould be an honor to sling some lead with you once again".

He finishes his beer, crunches the can by smashing it against his forehead. He smiles thru some missing teeth and winks, "You know where to find me". Daniel tosses the flattened can into a rusty 55 gallon drum by the door. "Now...I gots painting to do myself, take care Amigo..." he puts his sunglasses back on as he closes the door behind him.

As "Gritty" walks back to his shop, you can here a little song, fading as he walks away. "1 ~~~2~~~ this bullets for you ~~~ 3~~~ 4~~~~~ ya gonna bleed out more ~~~~~~~~ 5 ~~~~~~~~~~ 6~~~~........."

Clifford Castleberry walks into the shop, "wheres that paintin' man GTO?" He speaks in a loud slightly bossy voice.

"I hear this shop makes some quality paint jobs, and the boss has a bit of a problem. You see we've got a driver who knows what he's doing, we got a fast car being built, but we don't look like we know what were doing, do you see the problem?"

Clifford browses the the selection of photos hung around the shop, with an impressed look on his face.

"You see, the boss wants that hot shot GTO to paint the stormer that were gunna race and see if we can't stir up some commotion with on the track, and we want to make sure we look good doing it."

"So here's the deal. Its gotta be a nice shade of blue. That's all. Just blue. Well no that's a lie its gotta be blue and we want to advertise this shop. GTO's paint and body, the whole lot. And the number 94 on the doors. And we'll pay for it. Yeah sounds like a good deal doesn't it?"

He pauses for a moment, and becomes slightly more serious.

"We'll pay provided its a good price and looks sharp..however. The boss has plenty of money laying around but there's a reason why. He doesn't much care to spend it."

"So what do you say hotshot? You think you could tell me what kinda cash were lookin' at here?"

Mary Colter tacks a poster to the outside of the shop, then turns to the bystanders with a big grin.

"Gorgeous, ain't it? Looks faster'n the devil himself, if ya ask me. But don't get all ahead o' things, now. When the auction starts, you'll see it in the marketplace. Hell, mebbe Crazy Al will wanna get involved. But in the meantime I've got a few more details to handle. Seeya round, boys!"

Skoaly struts by as if he has some old school dance song play'n in his head whilst smoke'n a cigar... He spots the freshly pinned poster out of the corner of his eye and exclaims, "That's what I'm talk'n bout!" and then nods in approval. He then takes a closer look at the Amabassador, "What an excellent idea... national pride 'n all that. Think that'll go over pretty well with the wee gangers understanding their heritage. Seems that sorta prides been lost since the winds came blow'n through." He then tips the ash of the cigar off into the dirt road and continues on to the pub... the song still playing in his head.

Ya know, a lotta times we look too hard at what keeps us apart. Things like what side o' tha Somerset fence ya live on, or whose friend murdered who before you blew their face apart in response. But it's good to know that when it's really important we can move beyond those things and work together for a better world.

And of course, here at GTO's we know that nothin' makes the world better than when we make it better lookin', because that's the best better of all. Sure, it makes us rich and famous, but that's just the accidental by-product of our ... ermmmm ...

Whatever. We just sold a whole buncha these SuperSonics to the wasteland gangs, because hey, we've all got our price and their money spends as good as anyone's.

Ya wanna custom job? We can do that for ya. And if ya just wanna loot one that's already paid for, they're out there. The SuperSonic. Because anything less is subsonic.
