Zombies attack Somerset!

*sam*

Posted Oct 25, 2010, 9:39 pm
As we have all seen, encounters with the 'zombie' creatures, first occurring several days ago, have been increasing.

It had to happen. Late one night, as your gang members stagger out of Dexter's after a night out.. they are attacked by zombies.

Your town need you! Sign up using the Events Diary!

Beware. Death very likely.

You don't suppose you could add an event around 18.00 server time or so, as 21.15 is a bit late for the earliest one, if possible, thank you.

That sounds like fun, but I second the request for an alternate time. Both current time slots are during the workday for me. :(

would it be possible to add an event at approx. 0600 - 0900 server time? That would serve the USA west coast. Any day would be good.

Zephyr... The server times you posted are: (0600 server time is 10pm Pacific.... 0900 server time is 1am PST time...)

We West-Coasters are 8 hours BEHIND GMT.... Greenwich Meridian Time is what the servers run on.

You knew that.... Didn't you?

I had some great luck and some terrible luck shooting zombies.
Killed 3 with about 10 shots then wasted a clip and a half on feet, shoulders and organs for nothing.

and BTW - one of the damages descriptions for the feet was something mispelt like "the bullet <stikes> the foot breaking it"
Saw that one waaaaaay too often.

Sam, you just made me think... "Aim for the head"

In essence, a character with the "sniper" ability gets the option to aim for the head, with a accuracy penalty, with higher levels of sniper helping to offset the penalty!!!

That would be, so freaking awesome, and also make sense with the sniper ability, as that's what a sniper does, aims for the critical!!!

Should be easy to implement to, just modify some stats and have the option "Repeat fire ... (Head)" :D

Even if you had to sustain target and not shoot for 5 turns or so to get some decnt accuracy, that would be so cool.

Yeah, Something like an "Aimed Shot"... you guys should all know that one from most RTT or turn based games :)
Zephyr

Posted Oct 28, 2010, 7:55 pm
I think that should be handled automatically. Basically, characters with Sniper skill should have a better chance to achieve critical hits, and the critical hits they do achieve are more catastrophic. So, better odds for a BOOM HEADSHOT. :cyclops:

Most of my gangers employ "retarded fire," unfortunately.  :p

But anyways... what you're talking about sounds like "overwatch"... that would be good too.  Aim at a target out of line-of-sight, and fire at it as soon as it pops into view.  That would be a VERY nifty skill for gangers to have, both for ped as well as vehicle combats.
*Rev. V*

Posted Oct 29, 2010, 3:22 am
But how do you aim at something out of sight, and why would that help?

Aiming at something you can't see won't help you hit it.
Flame

Posted Oct 29, 2010, 4:18 am
The only weapon that seemed effective against the zombies was the rifle and the hammer. Making molotovs and grenades more effective would be cool.

Blowing giant chunks off the zombies and breaking limbs seems to do almost nothing. It doesn't even seem to slow them down. Perhaps they are just too hard to kill period. If they were easier to kill - there could be even more of a splatterfest!

Also I have always felt that shotguns are underated in this game. My feeling is that they should be much more accurate(and deadly) at close range. Perhaps the introduction of a combat shotgun would allow the shotgun to retain the status that it currently has whilst adding another weapon to the DW arsenal.

On a side note the team chat didn't seem to work in the zombie fight and you can still only have 1 info tag above a ped...it would be nice to be able to have the doods name, the gang name and health% above a character just like a vehicle.

No I was just saying that to do an "aimed shot" it should block a few turns before you fire is all, example;

snipe1 = 4 sec
snipe2 = 3 sec
sinipe3 = 2 sec
snipe 4 = 1 sec (don't know if this should be caped, or restricted only to handgun skills for the snipe specialsm for the aimed shot)

All right, did my first Zombie Attack scenario today.  It was really thrilling and tense.  Damn, those zombies are tough!  Basically nothing except headshots did anything to them.

It was my gang and the San Jose Baggers versus several waves of zombies. Unfortunately SJB brought pistols and shotguns, so he was at a big disadvantage.  After reading the after-action reports from the other zombie-fighters, I armed all 3 of my gangers with a rifle and four extra clips.  I used a bounding-overwatch fallback method; one person would kneel and fire while the other two would run away from the zombies, they would take turns shooting.

The "waves" spawning freaked me out; I would have a good location set up and suddenly there would be fresh zombies coming up behind me!  Scary.

I brought my Pyro psyker and he managed to set three different zombies on fire!  Only one of them was affected, though, and that was just to knock him down for a second or two.  The other two just kept coming at 100% while they burned merrily.

After 220 turns I was down to my last seven bullets (between all 3 gangers) with one zombie left on the board.  I formed a line, crouched, and waited for the zombie to get **very** close. I was not looking forward to having to wrestle with him. Taking careful aim, I opened fire and, with three bullets left (after starting with 300 altogether), I got the last headshot and dropped the zombie.

Somerset is safe from the Zombie menace for now, but just barely.
*sam*

Posted Oct 30, 2010, 10:10 am
Nice report, Zeph! It sounds like the 'waves' code worked as intended then B)

Maybe it should be incorporated into regular footsquad-vs-critters events?
*Wolfsbane*

Posted Oct 30, 2010, 10:20 am
Yeah, the waves were good. Makes sitting still and shooting a lot harder.

I was wondering about going even further and having small waves (2-3 near each other) spawn every 10 turns or so. Probably too hard with zombies, but might work with critters.
FireFly

Posted Oct 30, 2010, 10:36 am
One problem, zombies are slow...

Having critters spawn in a surround pattern as close as 20m is way, way to hard.

Also consider different zombie types a la' several other games

rotted and dry zombies could have a darker hue and burn better

Mushy one could lose limbs easier and have trouble getting up again etc

Bones ones could have smal burst radius for light bone shranel

etc
etc
