Darkwind
Character Ranking, Math Max Beyond The Numberdome

How do you measure/rank the overall skills and the value they bring to you of your gang?

What factors into it and how much?

Can you sum it all up into one number?

Here's what I came up with for that and built into my darkwind stats tracking utility (link to dwstats, you can also check out the other thread about that):

Character scoring algorithm:
All bonuses are cumulative:

1000 Starting pity points

Skills:
+15 for every point in Gunnery, Large Guns, Ballistics, Psionics
+10 for every point in Handguns, Mechanic, Scouting, Driving
+5 for every point in First aid, Cyclist, Trucking
+1 for every point of Courage and Leadership (Shown as "heroism")

+25 for every available specialism
+500 for having psionics

-500 for having a known skill cap below 100
+250 for having an overall skill cap above 100
+250*n for every 50 points the skill cap is over 100
(Uncapped characters with high skills get this too for their highest skill)

+25*(n-1) for having multiple skills above 50
+50*(n-1) for having multiple skills above 100
+75*(n-1) for having multiple skills above 150
+100*n-1 for having multiple skills above 200
...
+x/50*25*(n-1) for having n skills above x (in increments of 50
(n = number of skills affected)
This can also be awarded multiple times for the same skill, someone with skills at 100,100,50 would get a bonus for 3x50+ skills and 2x 100+ skills

Stats
+10 for every year below 25
-20 for every year above 25

+5 for every stat point in Dexterity, Strength
+8 for every point in Speed

-100 for every stat below 25
+50 for every stat above 50
+100 for every stat above 75
+150 for every stat above 85
+250 for every stat above 100

You also get a penalty to all positive bonuses based on your activity level (negative things such as old age or low skill caps aren't affected by this)

I'm looking for stuff I've missed or weighted as more or less important than I should be or characters who "break" this system by coming out too strong/weak in the numbers but for all practical reasons aren't all that.

I'm also still interested in alternative methods and approaches to this.

Also just for fun, who has the weskest/strongest characters according to this? Who has the strongest gang altogether? (total gang score is show at the very bottom in DWStats)

Thats cool, one question, what gives the "Heroism" points?

Also, my 2 best scored ones are...

Joe 'Lunatic' Luna "13657"
Drew 'Laz0r' Montano "12491"

Oh, Total Gang Score: 353299, hired a bunch of fillers lately...

That's courage + leadership, I also edited this into the original post now.

Hmm, my highest-scoring character seems to be my leader's mutant bodyguard.  I guess most of it comes from high stats and psi, although he has over 3000 points of secondary skills (drive 150, mech 150).

Total gang score 338089.  I'd expect that to be high for me - I play conservatively, so I have a lot of fairly good characters but few excellent ones.

Looking more closely, this seems a little odd:
Code:
1
2
3
4
          Gun  LGun    HG    Bal  Wpn
Char 1    68    110    54    6    238
Char 2    75    60    51    51    237
Char 3    50    121    9    53    233

I think char 2 should be scoring lower than the other two, although I'm open to arguments.  I certainly value him less.

I find it odd that a spec is only worth as much a 2 points in a skill. Or is that a typo? Should it be 250 for a spec?

Top score - 17770. Dang age hurts!

Total gang - 433435

John 'Ammo Beotch' Swayze 14519 (?) (capped guy I use for PvP actually...)

gang: 475812

This is actually quite useful for me - pretty much picked my A Team to the top - that took me an embarrassingly long time to "figure out" for long term scouting in BL.

Yeah that's a tough one, In my opinion Char 2 potentially has access to better specialisms, on the other hand the other guys might be more useful in scouts due to their higher LG skills.

I think what skews it a bit is that ballistics is a primary skill, I initially wanted to put it under secondary skills because it's sort of situational, but decided against it for some reason, what do other people think about this? If you have to generalize for most situations how useful is ballistics really?

This also gives me the idea of having a "best weapon skill" bonus (+1 for every point in the highest weapon skill) to give more-specialized characters a fairer chance against jacks of all trades.

It actually was 250 initially, but I had to cut it down. It would make up 25%+ of the score otherwise and that didn't feel right. I was probably overzealous though and 50-75 seems like a better range. I'm also considering making it more points for every specialism after the first. Either way I agree that the bonus needs to be higher.

Also I made a slight adjustment to the way specialism bonuses are calculated - before it just used the sum of all skill points / 50 + heroism / 100 - which isn't how it actually works and can lead to it thinking you have more specialisms than you actually do. It now gets the actual number by looking at the skills separately.

Also I forgot to post my own gang/guys numbers:

John 'Projectile' Meredith - 10819 (Some guy who I didn't manage to get killed yet so he's capped out on several skills)
'Bandit' Buster Mata - 9717 (Leader, with -1,2k in activity/age penalties)

Total Gang Score: 299244

Hovering over the question marks in dwstats should show you a more detailed breakdown of the score.

The 'Fetch' function doesn't seem to work for me (tried both Firefox and Safari under Windows).. I just keep getting 'slow script' warnings but nothing comes up.

Hmm, that was a bit tricky to figure out, but this seems to happen when you enter an invalid username/id combo, could it be that?

I completely forgot to handle that particular case in the error checking and the program failing catastrophically at such a simple thing is pretty silly :p

EDIT: Fixed (or at least you get an error message instead of the javascript equivalent of a "crash" now :p)

So now we know where alo has been.

Why is handguns less valuable than gunnery? Fat ad I can see its specialisms that really count and handguns gives gunnery specs like sniper.

Never get out of the car...  B)

but hmm, while I'm at it it might be a nice idea to add this to the specialism calculations so that some skills give more points per specialism than others.

You're not accounting for age at all?

In my opinion, a 20 year old ganger is more valuable then a 30 year old ganger with otherwise the exact same stats.

(general health probably matters even more then age, but I know you can't fetch that value right now)

I have to say Alo, after all the bad blood we've had in the past, you have been helping DW very much lately and kudos to you and your skills.

Thanks for this "GEM" of a program! You have made all the spreadsheets ANY member has made to track their gang obsolete in one fell swoop!

NICE JOB! ;)

Oh yeah I have not been as active as I'd like and my gang numbers show it!

My highest ganger score is 8123
My gangs total score is 219194

Aha.. seems like a slight mistake on your website.
It's not username and gang ID you need to enter, it's username and user ID..

Gang total score:  246310
Best character (gang leader): Annette Jackman (10113). Ok she might look weak compared to you lot, but she's the best gunner in Evan! None of this multi-skill nonsense..

Yeah I should be trying to use the same terminology as DW to avoid confusion, so changed the labels to say user id now.
