Shadows merged as the last of the sun retired behind the hills. A thruming buzz filled Silvia "Scotty" Hall's ears as a floodlight awoke on the pole above her. With a sigh she climbed down from her vigil on the town wall.
The telegraph office was empty. She spoke briefly to the clerk. "PALOMITA LUNA SEA SOMERSET STOP SARSFIELD COMBAT OPERATIONS CEASED STOP SUTTON BROWN ELLIS MIA PRESUME KIA STOP AWAITING ORDERS FULL STOP" She lost track of time standing outside the office, watching folks about their own business. The clerk got her attention with a cough and handed over the reply. "LUNA SEA MOBILIZING STOP STAND BY FULL STOP" Scotty Hall reread the single line again and again walking back to the local Luna Sea headquarters, a converted mechanic shop. The cars were wedged in together, a glaring void where an ill-fated apache was parked that morning. Luna Sea mobilizing? "We're going to need a bigger garage." |
