This patch brings in the first version of the new ambush-spawn code that we have been discussing in the forum. For the moment, this means you may meet NPC enemies both in-front *and* behind you on any map, and also from the sides on certain maps (in addition to the previous ambush spawns which we already had).
Reputation loss with a faction due to combats has also changed: the bulk of the loss now goes to the actual gang that caused injuries, rather than to everyone in the squad. The patch also adds the trash truck! - thanks again for Wolfsbane and goatstarer for helping out with this one Incidentally, there are several more vehicles almost ready to add.. these all need skins making however: please check out the "New Vehicles Need Skinning" thread in the subscribers forum. These include a retro camper van, a motorhome, a tractor, and a fueltanker... [thread here] |

How rare will these behemoths be ?
Because : Now here's a little story To tell it is a must About an unsung hero That moves away your dust Some people make a fortune Other's earn a mint My old man don't earn much In fact....he's flippin'.....skint Oh, my old man's a dustman He wears a dustman's hat He wears cor blimey trousers And he lives in a council flat He looks a proper narner In his great big hob nailed boots He's got such a job to pull em up That he calls them daisy roots |
||||
*sam* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 10:23 am |
Pretty rare to start with, until we see how powerful they are. I'm thinking they'll stay fairly rare.. they will however be purchasable at TX/SF from time to time
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 10:48 am |
SF?
Oh yes! So, in comparison to buzzers, is the armor stronger or weaker, and how do they compare to firetrucks? Can they fit a 9.4l, and how is the bulk? Either way, looks really nice Oh, also, will the tanker have some "Special" explosion coding, cause it should |
||||
Serephe Posted Mar 11, 2010, 10:52 am |
From my testing, a little more armor than a buzzer though it seems weaker, much less armor than a firetruck, more space, only fits 8L unexposed, struggles to pass 100mph.

FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:00 am |
Forgot about that one, sorry
Edit... Trash - Truck Rarity - Rare Cost - Ultra Expensive Toughness - Super Strong Weight - 7500 Total Capacity - 1500 Exposed Engine Capacity - 192 (9.4L) Seats - 6 Weapon Mounts FRx2, REx2, LEx2, RIx2 All I need to know now is the armor per side, is it 50 like the other ones of this size, or 30? But I need to get this said... OMFG, AWESOME!!!!?!?!?! I wonder how it handles, either way, it looks seriously awesome, my tank guns might finally see some use |
||||
Serephe Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:12 am |
40 per side. | ||||
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:19 am |
My lord... its the second strongest car in the game then, between the buzzer and firetruck
Serephe Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:29 am |
The armor doesn't seem to take damage quite as well as the buzzer. The large amount of bulk makes it incredibly powerful however. It could possibly do with a slight reduction in speed, though until I test it out in the actual game I can't be sure. Tactical does have oddities about it of course.
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:36 am |
Well, then again, did you use an 8l or 9.4l?
The 9.4 is a large and powerful engine after all... Tac always seemed to have issues with the weight of things thou, so yeah, lets wait for the main game. I'm guessing its on the landrunner side of "Super strong", that is still strong enough |
||||
Serephe Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:42 am |
I used a 7L v12. 9.4L is exposed, which will lead to death.
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:50 am |
Can you try an 8l for me, at school right now, but I really want to know, make sure to load 2 tank guns in the front
Serephe Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:51 am |
You can try it when you get home and see for yourself. 7L V12 seems to have more power than the 8L anyway.
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:56 am |
Eh, wishful thinking, yeah, the v12 has way more power than the 8l from what I've heard.
Psygo Posted Mar 11, 2010, 12:26 pm |
I just did a test with six tank guns... started at 30, never went above 35.
*Burden* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 12:27 pm |
You werent exactly driving straight...
My truck reached 40 once. I was busy turning my RGMs towards Psy though |
||||
Serephe Posted Mar 11, 2010, 12:35 pm |
Oh I forgot to mention... 100mph was on a dead flat straight tarmac road.
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 12:37 pm |
In how many turns?
Just saying, 8l lorries have no problem doing that, on that kind of road, they can get to 130, this was highway to hell in my case. |
||||
*Grograt* gary.r.horder@gmail.com Posted Mar 11, 2010, 12:46 pm |
But, it should be stopping at every house
lordbam Posted Mar 11, 2010, 12:49 pm |
lorry's can do 100 mph easy...
Problem is the bend that follows. :-) |
||||
Serephe Posted Mar 11, 2010, 1:15 pm |
Lorries can do 245mph, even when driven by the AI.
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 1:30 pm |
Well, why is the trash truck to fast then?
The firetruck is quick to, so either all of the big ones are to fast, or the trash truck should be about the same, probably |
||||
*sam* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 1:32 pm |
It's probably the acceleration that matters more than the top speed?
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 1:35 pm |
Well, until I try it I wont know, but it should probably be around the same speed the other heavies do, with the same engines...
*Grograt* gary.r.horder@gmail.com Posted Mar 11, 2010, 1:47 pm |
Ever seen a rubbish truck doing 100 mph anywhere ?
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 1:48 pm |
Ever seen a lorry doing 100mph anywhere, or a firetruck?
What makes the trash truck so much slower than any other heavy duty vehicle? |
||||
*Grograt* gary.r.horder@gmail.com Posted Mar 11, 2010, 1:52 pm |
Its full of crap our gangers will need new uniforms
|
||||
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 2:49 pm |
My garbage trucks wont be full of crap, they will be full of ammo for the tank guns
But if that's your thing, errr, stay away from meeeee! |
||||
*sam* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 4:29 pm |
Just with regard to the new ambush spawns.. please feel free to post images and event IDs here if you have any that you think were unfair or badly done.. as always, I have done my best to set the calcs up well, but I'm ready to tweak them where necessary.
FireFly Posted Mar 11, 2010, 4:37 pm |
Uh, well, don't expect much from me, I've only had 2 ambushes in the past 2 months, and both were SS solo scouts...
I wonder if you could pull up a statistic of who gets ambushed the most |
||||
*Wolfsbane* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 4:40 pm |
Rez. Trust me on this. | ||||
*Grograt* gary.r.horder@gmail.com Posted Mar 11, 2010, 4:52 pm |
Lol Rez is an ambush magnet indeed
*Urban Decay* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 5:00 pm |
I have already seen 2 small ambushes out of the Elmsfield to Fort Sherman route. Both from Firelight Manhunters while moving a single muscle car with camp goods.
Spawn set seems fairly strong, with their ability to move from what looks like not that good of a position, to getting right on you. This however was with 2 cars against my single muscle. Assuming with more cars those ambushes might have been quite interesting indeed. Believe first one was either side, and other was one on side and one behind. |
||||
Flaming savage Posted Mar 11, 2010, 6:13 pm |
Ambushes have become mcuh more frequent with this implemention. Is this intentional?
*Marc5iver* marcg@comcast.net Posted Mar 11, 2010, 6:15 pm |
Think I may have to forgo scouting for a few days and let you guinea pigs work out the kinks
*Grograt* gary.r.horder@gmail.com Posted Mar 11, 2010, 6:16 pm |
Lol kinda glad wont be on till tomorrow now
*sam* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 6:53 pm |
They haven't become more frequent per se. It's only maps that previously had no ambush spawns defined that will be different in that regard, since ambushes have become possible on them for the first time. (And that's actually not many of the maps as far as I recall). |
||||
*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Mar 11, 2010, 7:12 pm |
Incidently, first scout since the patch... Surrounded front and back, the picture doesn't even show all the cars, there was another disco and a few more symphs... |
||||
*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Mar 11, 2010, 7:20 pm |
And the return... This is ridiculous...
Again, there were more behind us too |
||||
*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Mar 11, 2010, 7:34 pm |
I don't mean to say that all the time and effort sam put into this new code isn't appreciated, I'm all for a few more challenging scouts... but this is damn near impossible...
Psygo Posted Mar 11, 2010, 7:41 pm |
yeah that red merc you see, was mine, I had to crush it into a lake for us to survive :<
Serephe Posted Mar 11, 2010, 8:18 pm |
That looks like a normal Texan return for me. :P
*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Mar 11, 2010, 8:25 pm |
Maybe with your CR sere... not with a CR this low.
Also, there aren't usually so many up front, even on an ambush. |
||||
*Burden* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 9:38 pm |
The real question is, how did they get there without being seen?
*Rezeak* reecestensel@hotmail.co.uk Posted Mar 11, 2010, 9:42 pm |
While this is a good roleplay point, I just don't think it's a valid argument for ambushes. If they had to be put in places where we couldn't see them to ambush us, there wouldn't be any ambushes. |
||||
*Wolfsbane* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 10:46 pm |
I'm in two minds about this one:
(the six SUVs near the arrow are ours) Event ID S187415 On the one hand that is an evil bugger of an ambush and we barely made it out alive. On the other, it was great fun once the initial terror wore off. If this happens a lot it could be a problem, but once in a while is OK. I may have to put my scout in a faster car... |
||||
theHumungous Posted Mar 11, 2010, 10:59 pm |
I think I agree with the "once in a while" part.
*Longo* Posted Mar 11, 2010, 11:53 pm |
I dont know is if this ambush is a result of the new spawning or not. This map is notorious for ambushes like this, and I recall numerous ones at this location. The best one that comes to mind was a huge one, the first scout ever with 20 cars in it I believe. Sam was there, JD, many others. I think I had a Phoenix with twin gats, hehe. |
||||
Lord Foul Posted Mar 12, 2010, 12:12 am |
Yes it is. If it's a wide open map there should be a very slim chance of an Ambush occurring. Cars appearing out of nowhere at a distance of 30m, 40m, 50m etc..in the middle of a highway is silly. Would you really be going a very slow speed of 30mph down a long highway and somehow not see any of these cars 40m away from you? No dust clouds of cars moving at 35mph through dirt or sand. Just like the head on code, there should less chances of ambushes occurring on open maps. Keep them on map they should occur on, not on ones that should not. There's no need to make the game even more unrealistic for the sake of being able to ambush a player in different areas. If you look at a map and say to yourself, would an ambush be likely ot happen here? If not, it won't happen there. If they can not be done in a logical fashion, they should not be done. Take that highway to hell ambush, now if the cars were positioned next to the old buildings and highway sections, it would be semi realistic. But the code put the cars right on top of you in very directions nohwere near a place they could have been hiding. |
||||
*Marc5iver* marcg@comcast.net Posted Mar 12, 2010, 1:01 am |
If an ambush were to happen on an open map, you can be surrounded but the pirates should be at a large distance from you.
Lord Foul Posted Mar 12, 2010, 2:22 am |
Agreed. Or at least some of them can be hidden near objects close to the road. The theory of them popping out of holes dug into the ground would not hold water as well. It would takes days to dig that many holes and I don't see any gang putting that much effort into an ambush. Unless it was to capture a squadcar.lol |
||||
*sam* Posted Mar 12, 2010, 8:50 am |
You're right Longo, this wasn't the new code at all. These were manually-defined spawn points made by viKKing and have been like this for the last 2.5 years. |
||||
Serephe Posted Mar 12, 2010, 8:53 am |
Funny how nobody complained until now hey?
*Grograt* gary.r.horder@gmail.com Posted Mar 12, 2010, 9:17 am |
Its that evil Deity ( sam ) playing with our lives, destroying our crops and stealing our first born for evil doing. Oh why oh why did we serve him for so long, he is pure evil.
*Wolfsbane* Posted Mar 12, 2010, 9:23 am |
Heh. I must have scouted that map a dozen times, and I've never seen an ambush before. I wasn't complaining about the ambush as such, but it certainly feels like they're a lot more frequent. I had two scouts and a travel yesterday, all three ambushes (and only one was without a decent scout). Still, statistics of small numbers and all that. I'm quite happy to wait and see how it all pans out.
*Ninesticks* Posted Mar 12, 2010, 8:32 pm |
For those who believe that being ambushed in the open or at close range is unrealistic, I would suggest you refer yourself to the experiences put to paper by tank commanders during the 1960s and 1970s - especially those revolving around conflicts to the East of Suez.
With low grade optics and/or vision slits (a fair parallel I would suggest) it was reported that it was incredibly hard to spot an immobile target (yes even large armoured targets) especially when the spotting vehicle was moving cross country (obviously even harder cross country with the difference in ride quality). A simple appropriately coloured tarp/scrim netting would be enough to blend a target into the background picture, and as an aside no you wouldn't hear them over your own engine noise. This is a far from complete response, but you get the drift I hope. Having them moving at speed is a good way of faking the surprise of the ambush. |
||||
Jeelz Posted Mar 13, 2010, 10:11 am |
Good call, nine.
In response to a much earlier comment in this thread - have seen heavy transport trucks in real life approaching 100mph (across the Nullarbor, mind you) although I would strongly suspect the gearing in a dump-truck would actually be for 'better' acceleration and lower top-speed, given the stop-start nature of their work. I like the new ambushes, although my only experiences so far have left the NPC's at an even greater disadvantage than normal - probably not necessary at this point in time. I look forward to getting bushwhacked. |
||||
*sam* Posted Mar 13, 2010, 10:15 am |
I probably over-compensated with my re-patch yesterday, after some outraged results from the initial patch. But I can take it slow and careful and tweak it back to the right level as feedback comes in... |
||||
JS Posted Mar 13, 2010, 9:35 pm |
I don't know if this is related to the changes. But in this event 188109, I started near the center of the circle and had two enemy cars on top of each other, one of them proceeded to literally jump my vehicle on the first turn. While entertaining it was a bit a of a bummer. I've lost unarmed travels to difficult ambushes before but this one took the cake so far. For a good laugh take a look. Sam, no idea if this is related to the changes or just a result of the old scripting.
*sam* Posted Mar 15, 2010, 12:19 pm |
Will check, thanks JS. edit: found the bug, should be gone now. |
